Around the world, feminist, women’s rights, and allied movements are confronting power and reimagining a politics of liberation. The contributions that fuel this work come in many forms, from financial and political resources to daily acts of resistance and survival.
AWID’s Resourcing Feminist Movements (RFM) Initiative shines a light on the current funding ecosystem, which range from self-generated models of resourcing to more formal funding streams.
Through our research and analysis, we examine how funding practices can better serve our movements. We critically explore the contradictions in “funding” social transformation, especially in the face of increasing political repression, anti-rights agendas, and rising corporate power. Above all, we build collective strategies that support thriving, robust, and resilient movements.
Our Actions
Recognizing the richness of our movements and responding to the current moment, we:

Create and amplify alternatives: We amplify funding practices that center activists’ own priorities and engage a diverse range of funders and activists in crafting new, dynamic models for resourcing feminist movements, particularly in the context of closing civil society space.

Build knowledge: We explore, exchange, and strengthen knowledge about how movements are attracting, organizing, and using the resources they need to accomplish meaningful change.

Advocate: We work in partnerships, such as the Count Me In! Consortium, to influence funding agendas and open space for feminist movements to be in direct dialogue to shift power and money.

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw
Biography
Marianne Mesfin Asfaw is a Pan-African feminist who is dedicated to social justice and building community. She has a BA in Gender Studies and International Relations from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and an MA in Gender Studies and Law from SOAS University of London. She has previously worked in academic administration and international student support, and has worked as a researcher and facilitator in feminist and non-profit spaces. She has also worked and volunteered at non-governmental organizations including Plan International in administrative roles. Prior to taking up her current role she worked in logistics and administrative support at AWID. She is from Ethiopia, was raised in Rwanda and is currently based in Tkaronto/Toronto, Canada. She enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. In the warmer months she can be found strolling around familiar neighborhoods in search of obscure cafés and bookstores to wander into.

Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Nous promouvons notre travail au travers des stratégies suivantes:
Plaidoyer et campagnes
Nous tirons collectivement parti de notre portée, de notre pouvoir, de nos ressources et de nos relations afin d’influencer stratégiquement les politiques et les pratiques. Nous visons à promouvoir les programmes féministes à travers les collaborations que nous menons avec les décideurs politiques, les fonda-trices-teurs et les activistes au sein des espaces régionaux et internationaux. Dans le cadre des efforts que nous déployons pour renforcer notre pouvoir et influence collectifs, nous incitons également les mouvements féministes et de lutte pour les droits des femmes à accorder une place centrale aux mouvements historiquement opprimés.
Rassemblement et coopération
Nous nous servons de notre pouvoir mobilisateur pour faciliter le dialogue et élaborer des stratégies sur des questions clés. Nous connectons nos membres et nos allié-e-s les une-s- aux autres, et partageons et échangeons nos ressources, nos idées et nos actions sur des questions pertinentes. Nous organisons des rassemblements et mettons à disposition des espaces nous permettant de consolider nos mouvements et de nouer des rapports les un-e-s avec les autres, d’imaginer et d’envisager de nouveaux horizons, de développer des stratégies d’influence efficaces et de créer ensemble des programmes et des processus importants.
Solidarité et construction de liens
Nous mobilisons nos membres et les mouvements que nous soutenons pour consolider l’action collective en solidarité avec les causes et les défenseur-e-s féministes en danger. Nous créons des partenariats, pratiquons l’écoute active et tissons des liens de solidarité continus et sur le long terme. Aux côtés de défenseur-e-s, nous oeuvrons à établir une base de connaissances et à soutenir des réseaux de solidarité autour de la protection et du bien-être.
Arts et expression créative
Nous reconnaissons la valeur unique des stratégies culturelles et créatives dans la lutte contre les oppressions et l’injustice. Nous travaillons avec des artistes qui accordent une place prépondérante aux voix féministes et aux récits des communautés historiquement opprimées. Nous voyons en cette tactique émergente l’art et l’expression créative comme autant de moyens nous permettant d’imaginer un monde où l’on continue de célébrer des réalités féministes, et où ces dernières continuent de prospérer.

Nos initiatives oeuvrent à l’intersection des zones de changement que nous abordons, des mouvements que nous priorisons et des stratégies que nous déployons:
Promotion des droits universels et de la justice
Nous surveillons, documentons et visibilisons la façon dont les acteurs anti-droits opèrent et conspirent au sein des espaces multilatéraux, et soutenons les mouvements et allié-e-s féministes, oeuvrant en faveur des droits des femmes et de la justice de genre pour contrer leur influence et leur impact.
Construction d’économies féministes
En travaillant sur l’extractivisme, la justice fiscale et la responsabilisation des entreprises, nous acquérons des connaissances sur le pouvoir des entreprises et leur influence; nous plaidons pour la responsabilisation des entreprises et la distribution équitable des richesses; et amplifions les propositions féministes en faveur d’économies plus justes.
Ressources des mouvements féministes
Nous développons des analyses accessibles et orientées vers l’action concernant l’état des ressources attribuées aux mouvements féministes. Nous nous efforçons d’influencer les pratiques et politiques des donateurs, d’approfondir et maintenir les subventions en faveur de changements sociaux féministes et de soutenir les besoins et les stratégies des mouvements.
L’AWID s’engage expressément à avoir de l’impact dans le monde et à renforcer nos propres résiliences et apprentissages organisationnels afin de consolider davantage les mouvements féministes internationaux.

Pourquoi maintenant?
Dans le monde entier, les mouvements féministes, de défense des droits des femmes, pour la justice de genre, pour la défense des personnes LBTQI+ et les mouvements alliés vivent un moment critique, face à de puissantes remises en question de droits et libertés pourtant acquis.
Ces dernières années ont vu la rapide montée de l’autoritarisme, de la violente répression de la société civile et de la criminalisation des défenseur·ses des droits humains des femmes et des personnes de genre divers, l’escalade de guerres et de conflits dans plusieurs régions du monde, la perpétuation des injustices économiques et de crises conjuguant la santé, l’écologie et les changements climatiques.
From “WID” to “GAD” to Women’s Rights: The First Twenty Years of AWID
In 2002 AWID celebrated its 20th anniversary. Given the challenging political, economic and funding environment in which women's organizations must survive, a milestone such as this is worthy of recognition.
In the past two decades the geo-political landscape has been transformed and development theories have come and gone, but approaches to ensure women benefit from development processes have endured.
In its twenty-year history, AWID grew from a volunteer organization for U.S. "Women in Development" (WID) specialists to an international network striving to support proactive and strategic gender equality research, activism and policy dialogue.
On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, this paper charts not only the changes in AWID's organizational structure and goals but also the shifts in policy approaches to gender equality in a changing global environment, through the lens of a membership organization committed to improving the lives of women and girls everywhere.

Biography
Stephanie Bracken is a feminist who is dedicated to building and supporting strong systems that meet the needs of the moment and the people who interact with them, and serve principles of justice. She holds a Master of Human Rights from the University of Sydney and a BA in Gender Studies, History, and Philosophy from McGill University, and has experience working with feminist and social justice organizations on monitoring, evaluation & learning, strategic work planning, governance, project management, and building operational systems and processes. Stephanie is based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal, where she enjoys singing with others, camping, fiber arts, and spending time with her kids and community.

Veena Singh
Biography
Veena Singh is a Fiji Islander, feminist, and woman of colour. Born and raised in a small rural town in Fiji, she draws strength from her rich mixed heritage (her mother is an Indigenous Fijian woman and her father is Fijian of Indian descent). Veena’s identity and lived experiences deeply inform her commitment to justice, equity, and inclusion. With over two decades of experience in human rights, gender equality, community development, and social inclusion, Veena is a passionate advocate for shifting power to create transformative change and for building an “economy of kindness”. Her work spans diverse areas including community development; women, peace and security; social policy; human rights; and policy advocacy.
Veena is deeply committed to advancing inclusion, peace and justice, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), climate justice, transitional justice, and human rights. She brings a wealth of experience working across grassroots networks, international organizations, and government institutions, always centering community and locally led approaches and feminist principles.
Outside of her ‘office life’, Veena is an environmental advocate, mental health champion, and writer. She is a mum to 11 cats, a saree wearer, and a lover of snail-mails and postcards. A thoughtful observer of feminist movements in Fiji and the Pacific, Veena is on a personal journey to “decolonise the mind and the self through radical self-reflection.” Above all, she is driven by a desire and dream to produce relatable, resonant writing that connects with the Pacific diaspora and amplifies voices from the margins.

Biography
Alejandra is passionate about women’s rights and gender justice. She dreams of creating a world that centers care – for people and nature. As a feminist human rights expert, she’s worked at the intersections of gender, climate, social and economic justice at various international organizations. Her areas of expertise include knowledge building and co-creation, research, facilitation, and advocacy. She holds a MA in Human Rights from the University of Essex and has authored and co-developed many publications, including the article “Enraged: Women and Nature”. The campaign Feminist Activism Without Fear draws on interviews and research carried out by Alejandra.
Originally from Argentina, she has lived and worked in several countries in Europe and Latin America over the past two decades. Alejandra loves photography, the sea, baking with her daughter, and enjoying food from around the world. As a mother, she aims to be a cycle breaker. Alejandra draws energy and inspiration from the amazing women in her life, who are spread in many corners of the world.

The 1st drafting session on the outcome document for the 3rd Financing for Development Conference
- In January 2015 a series of drafting sessions towards the final outcome document started at UN headquarters in New York.
- Prior to the first drafting session the co-facilitators of the Addis conference preparatory process presented an elements paper for the so-called “zero-draft” outcome document, as the basis for the intergovernmental negotiations of the outcome document.
- During the sessions, women’s rights organisations emphasised the need to treat the FfD and means of implementations (MOI) under the post 2015 processes separately, because FfD provides a unique opportunity for states to address the structural causes of inequality.
