What are Feminist Realities?
Feminist Realities are the living, breathing examples of the just world we are co-creating. They exist now, in the many ways we live, struggle and build our lives.
Feminist Realities go beyond resisting oppressive systems to show us what a world without domination, exploitation and supremacy look like.
These are the narratives we want to unearth, share and amplify throughout this Feminist Realities journey.
Transforming Visions into Lived Experiences
Through this initiative, we:

Create and amplify alternatives: We co-create art and creative expressions that center and celebrate the hope, optimism, healing and radical imagination that feminist realities inspire.

Build knowledge: We document, demonstrate & disseminate methodologies that will help identify the feminist realities in our diverse communities.

Advance feminist agendas: We expand and deepen our collective thinking and organizing to advance just solutions and systems that embody feminist values and visions.

Mobilize solidarity actions: We engage feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements and allies in sharing, exchanging and jointly creating feminist realities, narratives and proposals at the 14th AWID International Forum.
The AWID International Forum
As much as we emphasize the process leading up to, and beyond, the four-day Forum, the event itself is an important part of where the magic happens, thanks to the unique energy and opportunity that comes with bringing people together.
We expect the next Forum to:

Build the power of Feminist Realities, by naming, celebrating, amplifying and contributing to build momentum around experiences and propositions that shine light on what is possible and feed our collective imaginations

Replenish wells of hope and energy as much needed fuel for rights and justice activism and resilience

Strengthen connectivity, reciprocity and solidarity across the diversity of feminist movements and with other rights and justice-oriented movements

Curatorial Note by Rula Khoury
As part of our commitment to engage more deeply with artists and the practice of co-creating Feminist Realities, AWID collaborated with an Artist Working Group to advance and strengthen feminist agendas and realities in their communities and movements through their creative expression. Our intention here is to bring feminist creatives together in a powerful and brave space where they grow and live freely, and where they shatter toxic narratives to replace them with transformative alternatives.
This exhibition gathers the work of artists and collectives from across the globe, those who are actively creating the difference that we want to see in the world. These feminist creatives include Upasana Agarwal, Nicole Barakat, Siphumeze Khundayi, Katia Herrera, Ali Chavez Leeds, Colectivo Morivivi, Ika Vantiani, and the curators behind the #MeToo in China exhibition. Their voices stand strong in their refusal to accept the limitations imposed by patriarchy, and amplify their commitments to the communities they are working in and with. In their own way, each artwork represents daily acts of resistance, untold stories and identities, connections to land and ancestry, and most importantly, the solidarity that exists within and amongst feminist movements and struggles. These artists are both inspired by and inspire creative strategies of feminist resistance and initiatives that show us how we can all live in a more just world - a world that centers care and healing.

Confronting Extractivism & Corporate Power
Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) worldwide defend their lands, livelihoods and communities from extractive industries and corporate power. They stand against powerful economic and political interests driving land theft, displacement of communities, loss of livelihoods, and environmental degradation.
Why resist extractive industries?
Extractivism is an economic and political model of development that commodifies nature and prioritizes profit over human rights and the environment. Rooted in colonial history, it reinforces social and economic inequalities locally and globally. Often, Black, rural and Indigenous women are the most affected by extractivism, and are largely excluded from decision-making. Defying these patriarchal and neo-colonial forces, women rise in defense of rights, lands, people and nature.
Critical risks and gender-specific violence
WHRDs confronting extractive industries experience a range of risks, threats and violations, including criminalization, stigmatization, violence and intimidation. Their stories reveal a strong aspect of gendered and sexualized violence. Perpetrators include state and local authorities, corporations, police, military, paramilitary and private security forces, and at times their own communities.
Acting together
AWID and the Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition (WHRD-IC) are pleased to announce “Women Human Rights Defenders Confronting Extractivism and Corporate Power”; a cross-regional research project documenting the lived experiences of WHRDs from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
We encourage activists, members of social movements, organized civil society, donors and policy makers to read and use these products for advocacy, education and inspiration.

"Women Human Rights Defenders confronting extractive industries: an overview of critical risks and Human Rights obligations" is a policy report with a gender perspective. It analyses forms of violations and types of perpetrators, quotes relevant human rights obligations and includes policy recommendations to states, corporations, civil society and donors.

"Weaving resistance through action: Strategies of Women Human Rights Defenders confronting extractive industries" is a practical guide outlining creative and deliberate forms of action, successful tactics and inspiring stories of resistance.

The video “Defending people and planet: Women confronting extractive industries” puts courageous WHRDs from Africa, Asia, and Latin America in the spotlight. They share their struggles for land and life, and speak to the risks and challenges they face in their activism.

Challenging corporate power: Struggles for women’s rights, economic and gender justice is a research paper outlining the impacts of corporate power and offering insights into strategies of resistance.

El Foro Internacional de AWID es un verdadero espacio de encuentro mundial que brinda, a quienes participan, la oportunidad de tejer redes, alianzas, de celebrar y aprender en una atmósfera estimulante, emotiva y segura.
Como proceso, el Foro abarca mucho más que el momento en que nos reunimos. Durante todo el año estamos trabajando con organizaciones y grupos, profundizando nuestras relaciones con ellas, vinculándonos con movimientos locales para entender mejor sus problemas y crear soluciones juntxs.
Como evento, el Foro tiene lugar cada tres o cuatro años en una región diferente del mundo y cristaliza todas las alianzas que hemos venido construyendo como parte de nuestro trabajo.
El Foro de AWID disuelve nuestros límites internos y externos, alberga discusiones en profundidad, colabora con el crecimiento personal y profesional, y fortalece a los movimientos por los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia de género.
El Foro responde a la urgencia de promover una participación y acción más sólidas y coordinadas por parte de lxs feministas, defensorxs de los derechos de las mujeres y de la justicia social, sus organizaciones y movimientos. También creemos que el Foro es más que un evento, ya que puede facilitar procesos que influyen en las ideas y las agendas de los movimientos feministas y de otros actores con quienes nos vinculamos.
El Foro pasó de ser una conferencia nacional con 800 participantes a un encuentro que reúne alrededor de 2000 feministas, líderes comunitarixs, activistas por la justicia social y agencias de financiamiento de todo el mundo.
El próximo Foro de AWID tendrá lugar del 11 al 14 de enero de 2021 en Taipéi, Taiwán.

2016 - Futuros feministas: Construyendo poder colectivo por los derechos y la justicia (Costa de Sauipe, Brasil)
Dado el complejo mundo que enfrentamos hoy, el Foro de AWID 2016 no se centró en un ‘tema’ en particular, sino en la creación de formas más efectivas de trabajar juntxs.
Pese a las dificultades del contexto en el que se celebró este Foro (la epidemia del virus del Zika, una huelga de lxs trabajadorxs del servicio exterior brasileño, el juicio político a la presidenta Dilma Rousseff y la crisis que le siguió), se logró congregar a más de 1800 participantes de 120 países y territorios de todas las regiones del mundo.
Lo que sucedió en el 13º Foro internacional de AWID:

Para el 96% de lxs participantes que respondieron a la encuesta de evaluación posterior al Foro, el evento fue una importante fuente de inspiración y energía.

El 98% de lxs participantes lo consideraron un importante espacio de convocatoria para los movimientos feministas, y manifestaron su esperanza de que AWID continúe organizado estos foros.
-
El 59% de quienes respondieron a la encuesta de evaluación del Foro declaró estar muy satisfechx con el Foro y el 34% algo satisfechx.

Se realizaron más de 150 sesiones en distintos formatos sobre diversos temas, desde la integridad y la libertad corporal, pasando por la violencia de género en el ámbito laboral, hasta estrategias de construcción de poder colectivo.

El primer Foro de Feminismos Negros, se celebró justo antes del Foro de AWID, y reunió a 250 feministas negrxs de todo el mundo, para crear colectivamente un espacio de poder desde donde construir y fortalecer las conexiones intergeneracionales y transnacionales.

2012: Transformando el Poder Económico para Avanzar los Derechos de las Mujeres y la Justicia (Estambul, Turquía)
El 12° Foro de AWID se llevó a cabo en el año 2012 en Estambul, Turquía, bajo el título “Transformando el Poder Económico para Avanzar los Derechos de las Mujeres y la Justicia”. El Foro 2012 fue el más grande y diverso que hemos organizado hasta la fecha, con la participación de 2239 activistas por los derechos de las mujeres, de 141 países. El 65% provenía del sur global y casi el 15% eran mujeres jóvenes menores de 30 años, mientras que el 75% de las personas asistían a un Foro de AWID por primera vez.
El programa del Foro se enfocó en la transformación del poder económico para promover los derechos de las mujeres y la justicia. Se ofrecieron más de 170 sesiones de lo más diversas, incluyendo las sesiones de la caja de herramientas económicas feministas para forjar habilidades, sesiones interactivas que representaron los 10 temas del Foro, discusiones en profundidad y las mesas redondas de solidaridad.
Aprovechando el impulso del Foro, hemos transformado la página web en un centro de recursos y aprendizaje que se basa en el contenido generado por las participantes mediante recursos multimedia sobre todos los componentes del Foro.

Leticia Eulalia Mary Mukasa- Kikonyogo
Leticia was a Ugandan lawyer and judge.
Prior to her retirement, she held many high profile positions including member of the Court of Appeal of Uganda and Deputy Chief Justice of Uganda. She was the first Ugandan woman to hold the position of Chief Magistrate between 1973 and 1986 and the first woman to be appointed High court judge in 1986.
She was one of the first ever women papal knights in the history of the Catholic Church in Africa. She died of a heart attack.

Taipei offre un certain niveau de stabilité et de sécurité aux divers·es participant·e·s du Forum que nous voulons rassembler. La ville dispose aussi de capacités logistiques importantes, en plus d’être accessible pour beaucoup de voyageurs·ses (avec une facilitation de procédure de visa électronique pour les conférences internationales).
Le mouvement féministe sur place est accueillant vis-à-vis du Forum et désire s’engager avec des féministes du monde entier.

Biography
Margo Okazawa-Rey is an activist-educator and transnational feminist working on issues of militarism for nearly 30 years. She is a founder member of the International Women’s Network against Militarism and Women for Genuine Security, the US group of the Network. She has long-standing activist commitments with Du Re Bang/My Sisters Place in South Korea and Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling in Palestine. She also serves on the International Board of PeaceWomen Across the Globe in Bern, Switzerland and is President of the Board of Directors of Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID). Her foundational activist/life principle is that love is a radical act. She is also known as DJ MOR Love and Joy.

Biography
Eni Lestari is an Indonesian domestic worker in Hong Kong and a migrant rights activist. After escaping her abusive employer, she transformed herself from a victim into an organizer for domestic workers in particular, and migrant workers in general. In 2000, she founded the Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers (ATKI-Hong Kong) which later expanded to Macau, Taiwan, and Indonesia. She was the coordinator and the one of the spokesperson of the Asia Migrants Coordinating Body (AMCB) - an alliance of grassroots migrants organisations in Hong Kong coming from Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Nepal and Sri Lanka. She is also the current chairperson of International Migrants Alliance, the first-ever global alliance of grassroots migrants, immigrants, refugees, and other displaced people.
She has held important positions in various organizations including and current Regional Council member of Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD), former Board Member of Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW), spokesperson for Network of Indonesian Migrant Workers (JBMI), advisor for ATKI-Hong Kong and Macau as well as the Association of Returned Migrants and Families in Indonesia (KABAR BUMI). She has been an active resource person in forums organized by academics, interfaith groups, civil societies, trade unions and many others at national, regional, and international arenas.
She has actively participated in United Nations assemblies/conferences on development and migrants’ rights and was chosen as a speaker at the opening of the UN General Assembly on Large Movement of Migrants and Refugees in 2016 in New York City, USA. She received nominations and awards such as Inspirational Women by BBC 100 Women, Public Hero Award by RCTI, Indonesian Club Award, and Non-Profit Leader of Women of Influence by American Chamber Hong Kong, and Changemaker of Cathay Pacific.

Rachel is a financial professional with over two decades of experience. She has overseen financial affairs and projects for private and public entities, non-profits, and international non-governmental organizations. A Chartered Accountant with a Global Master’s in Business Administration, she is also a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. In her spare time, Rachel designs typography art, enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends over a bottle of wine.

The AWID international Forum is a gathering of 2,000 women’s rights leaders and activists from around the world. The AWID Forum is the largest recurring event of its kind, and every Forum takes place in a different country in the global South.
The AWID International Forum is both a global community event and a space of radical personal transformation. A one-of-a-kind convening, the Forum brings together feminist, women’s rights, gender justice, LBTQI+ and allied movements, in all our diversity and humanity, to connect, heal and thrive.
When people come together on a global scale, as individuals and movements, we generate a sweeping force.

- The zero-draft outcome document (dated 16 March), prepared by the Co-facilitators, was released for discussion at the 2nd drafting session from 13-17 April 2015.
- During the opening session, the WWG on FfD called for dedicated resources for gender equality and women’s empowerment as stated in both the Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration,to be added into the Zero draft.
