Young Feminist Activism

Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat

Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.

At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.

A multigenerational approach

AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.

Our Actions

We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

  • Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

  • Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

  • Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

  • Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

  • Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Asociación de Mujeres Afrodescendientes del Norte del Cauca

La organización comunitaria de mujeres negras en la región del Norte del Cauca en Colombia se remonta al pasado colonial del país, que está marcado por el racismo, el patriarcado y el capitalismo que sustentaron la esclavitud como un medio para explotar los ricos suelos de la región.

Estas organizadoras son las heroínas de un amplio movimiento por la autonomía negra, que lucha por el uso sostenible de los bosques y los recursos naturales de la región como elementos vitales para su cultura y sustento.

Durante 25 años, la Asociación de Mujeres Afrodescendientes del Norte del Cauca (ASOM) se ha dedicado a impulsar la organización de mujeres afrocolombianas en el Norte del Cauca. Se establecieron en 1997 como respuesta a las continuas violaciones de derechos humanos, la ausencia de políticas públicas, el manejo inadecuado de los recursos naturales y la falta de oportunidades para las mujeres en el territorio.

Han forjado la lucha para asegurar los derechos étnico-territoriales, para poner fin a la violencia contra las mujeres y obtener el reconocimiento del papel de las mujeres en la construcción de la paz en Colombia.

Quel est l’objet de l’enquête WITM?

Le principal objectif de l’enquête WITM est de faire la lumière sur la situation financière de divers mouvements féministes, de défense des droits des femmes, pour la justice de genre, de défense des personnes LBTQI+ et des mouvements alliés dans le monde entier. Sur cette base, nous souhaitons démontrer l’importance d’orienter davantage de fonds, de meilleure qualité, et de transférer le pouvoir vers les mouvements féministes.

Nous Sommes la Solution es un movimiento de mujeres rurales por la soberanía alimentaria en África Occidental. Originalmente fundada como una campaña contra la agricultura hiper-industrializada, Nous Sommes la Solution se ha convertido en un movimiento de más de 500 asociaciones de mujeres rurales de Burkina Faso, Senegal, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Malí y Guinea.

Este movimiento liderado por mujeres está construyendo y fortaleciendo la soberanía alimentaria y de semillas en África Occidental. Alimentan a las comunidades, fortalecen las economías locales, amplían el conocimiento de las mujeres agricultoras y mitigan los efectos devastadores de la crisis climática a través de las prácticas agroecológicas. También organizan talleres, foros y transmisiones de radio comunitarias para compartir sus mensajes, conocimientos tradicionales y prácticas agroecológicas en las comunidades rurales.

En colaboración con universidades y centros públicos de investigación, Nous Sommes la Solution trabaja para restaurar las variedades indígenas de arroz (un alimento esencial de África Occidental) y promover economías alimentarias locales basadas en principios agroecológicos para influir en la formulación de políticas nacionales, mientras apoya a las mujeres en la creación de asociaciones agrícolas y su acceso a la propiedad y gestión colectiva de las tierras agrícolas.
