AWID Forum: Co-creating Feminist Futures
In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Sus gestos escriben una oración;

noto sus detalles:
marchitarse, carne, deleite
A su orden, la enredadera que cubre el vestíbulo
abrazando piedras tibias
serpentea hacia arriba por la pared.
Se convierte en un verbo,
«trepar»,
y me reoriento cuando sus garras apuntan
al cantero de la enredadera en el centro.
Oigo las ruedas detrás de mí,
luego ese sonido.
Reverbera
como ningún otro.
Sus largas alas negras
se elevan hacia el cielorraso
y después se lanzan hacia adelante.
La visión felina examina cada detalle,
cada cambio,
cada anhelo.
¿Puede el deseo licuar tus músculos?
¿Puede actuar más dulce que el
tranquilizante más potente?
Un lince cose el mundo
a través de nuestras diferencias
tejiendo encaje alrededor de mis rodillas.
¿Puede el deseo aplastar la distancia del mundo, comprimiendo los segundos?
Se acerca todavía más,
el ojo de lince encontrando el ojo humano,
olfateando el aire,
convirtiendo al cuerpo en
urgencia.
Ellx agita sus alas.
Atizadas,
las lianas se enmarañan alrededor de mi cintura/residuo.
Su lengua adelgaza el tiempo,

Anna Campbell (şehid Hêlîn Qerecox)
Anna a grandi à Lewes, dans le Sussex (Royaume-Uni). Après avoir décidé de ne pas poursuivre sa licence d’anglais à l'Université de Sheffield, elle a déménagé à Bristol et est devenue plombière.
Elle a passé une grande partie de son temps à défendre les personnes marginalisées et défavorisées, à assister à des rassemblements antifascistes et à offrir son soutien aux femmes de la Dale Farm lorsqu'elles furent menacées d'expulsion. Végétalienne et amie des animaux, elle a participé à des missions de sabotage de chasses et son nom est honoré sur le monument commémoratif « Arbre de vie » de l’organisation PETA. Anna s'est rendue à Rojava en mai 2017 pour lutter en faveur du renforcement du pouvoir des femmes, de la pleine représentation de toutes les ethnies et de la protection de l'environnement.
Anna est décédée le 15 mars 2018, après avoir été atteinte par une frappe aérienne turque dans la ville d'Afrin, dans le nord de la Syrie. Anna se battait auprès des forces de protection des femmes (YPJ) quand elle a été tuée.

Kagendo Murungi
Kagendo is remembered fondly by family and friends as a fierce African feminist activist, artist, and filmmaker.
She dedicated over 20 years to advocate for the rights and dignity of African LGBTIQ and gender non conforming people.
Kagendo’s colleagues remember her as someone with a jovial personality, fierce conviction, and love for life. Kagendo died due to natural causes at her home in Harlem on December 27th, 2017.
On Kagendo’s passing Kenyan writer and activist Shailja Patel noted “Kagendo's lifelong commitment to connecting the dots between all oppressions, showing how colonialism fostered homophobia on the African continent, making Kenya a country where queer Kenyans and free women could live and thrive.”

Benoîte publicó más de 20 novelas y numerosos ensayos sobre feminismo.
En 1975 se publicó su primer libro, Ainsi Soit-Elle (que podría traducirse «Como ella es»). En él analizaba la historia de los derechos de las mujeres, así como la misoginia y la violencia contra las mujeres.
En su último libro, Ainsi Soit Olympe de Gouges, analizaba los derechos de las mujeres durante la Revolución Francesa, centrándose en la pionera feminista francesa. Olympe de Gouges fue guillotinada en 1793 por desafiar la autoridad masculina; dos años antes había publicado una declaración sobre los derechos de las mujeres («Déclaration Des droits de la Femme et de la Citoyenne»).

Shireen Lateef
Figure inspirante pour de nombreux-ses féministes aux Fidji, Shireen était une alliée de poids du mouvement des femmes. Elle a plaidé sans relâche pour l'égalité de genre aux niveaux local et régional.
Ayant débuté sa carrière en tant que spécialiste de l’égalité de genre à la Banque asiatique de développement, elle a apporté des changements radicaux en matière d’égalité de genre aux politiques de l’institution. Sa recherche, intitulée « La règle des Danda : la violence domestique chez les Indo-Fidjiens », est l'une des premières recherches sur la violence domestique, le mariage et les femmes aux Fidji. Ce travail précurseur a servi de catalyseur pour la militance féministe dans ce domaine.
L’héritage de Shireen lui survit et beaucoup se souviennent de son influence, de son engagement et de son soutien au mouvement des femmes aux Fidji et dans le Pacifique.

Mariam Uy Acob
Mariam was a paralegal at the Kawagib Moro Human Rights Alliance.
Mariam was a staunch critic of militarization in Moro communities, and consistently denounced aerial bombardment and encampment. She had to seek sanctuary after exposing and calling out the injustices committed against Muslim communities in the Philippines.
She is believed to have been killed by suspected military agents because of her work as a WHRD. The assailants who killed Mariam waited for her, caught up with the vehicle she was using and shot her seven times.
