Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Abby Lippman
Abby était une féministe pionnière, militante des droits humains.
Ancienne épidémiologiste de l'Université McGill, Abby était réputée pour défendre les causes sociales et pour ses critiques perspicaces concernant les technologies de procréation humaine assistée et d'autres sujets médicaux. Plus précisément, elle a fait campagne contre ce qu'elle a appelé la « généticisation » des technologies de procréation, contre l'hormonothérapie substitutive et pour des recherches plus qualitatives et plus longues avant l'approbation de nouveaux vaccins comme celui contre le papillomavirus humain.
À la nouvelle de son décès, ses ami-e-s et collègues l'ont décrite avec affection comme une « ardente défenseure » de la santé des femmes.
Lutter pour les droits humains et affronter l'injustice en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes
Cette année, nous rendons hommage à dix-neuf défenseuses des droits humains originaires de la région Amérique latine et Caraïbes. Parmi elles, seize ont été assassinées, dont six journalistes et quatre défenseuses des droits des personnes LGBT*QI. Nous vous invitons à vous joindre à nous pour commémorer la vie et le travail de ces femmes. Muchas cosas hermosas surgieron del Foro de Feminismos Negros (BFF) de 2016, organizado por un Grupo Asesor y financiado por AWID. Parte del activismo independiente que surgió del BFF incluye al activismo feminista negro de Brasil. Si bien este año no tendremos otro BFF, seguimos comprometidxs a compartir algunas de las enseñanzas fundamentales con cualquier persona interesada en continuar el trabajo sobre el activismo feminista negro.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela
Winnie has been described as a “militant firebrand activist” who fought the apartheid regime in South Africa.
She was imprisoned multiple times, and on many occasions placed in solitary confinement.
Ma’Winnie, as she is affectionately remembered, was known for being outspoken about the challenges Black women faced during and after apartheid, having been on the receiving end of these brutalities herself as a mother, wife and activist during the struggle. She transcended the misconception that leadership is gender, class or race-based. Despite being a controversial figure, she is remembered by many by her Xhosa name, “ Nomzamo”, which means "She who endures trials".
Ma’Winnie continues to be an inspiration to many, particularly young South African women for whom her death has spurred a burgeoning movement, with the mantra: "She didn't die, she multiplied."

Este año, el Tributo Virtual honra a 7 defensoras de derechos humanos de la región de Asia meridional y Sudeste asiático. Son defensoras que han hecho aportes fundamentales para lograr avances en los derechos humanos y de las mujeres, los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y el derecho a la educación. Estas defensoras se desempeñaron como abogadas, activistas de derechos de las mujeres, académicas y políticas. Tendo em conta que o inquérito WITM foca-se nas realidades do financiamento de organizações feministas, a maioria das perguntas aborda o tópico do financiamento do seu grupo entre 2021-2023. Será preciso ter essas informações facilmente acessíveis para preencher o inquérito (por exemplo, os seus orçamentos anuais e as principais fontes de financiamento).

Antes de comenzar a aplicar la metodología de investigación WITM, es importante que te prepares y que sepas con qué te vas a encontrar.
Capacidad
Antes de implementar la metodología de investigación WITM de AWID, te recomendamos que leas el Manual completo.
Si bien el propósito de este Manual es democratizar las investigaciones sobre WITM, tu organización podrá usar esta metodología en la medida de su capacidad, es decir, sus recursos y experiencia en investigación.
Utiliza la Planilla «¿Estoy listx?» para evaluar en qué medida estás preparadx para comenzar la investigación WITM. Cuantas más preguntas de la planilla puedas responder, más preparadx estarás para embarcarte en la investigación.
Confianza
Antes de comenzar cualquier investigación, te recomendamos evaluar los lazos que tiene tu organización con la comunidad y la confianza que ha generado en ella.
En muchos contextos, algunas organizaciones tal vez no quieran compartir abiertamente información financiera por distintos motivos que van desde la preocupación acerca de cómo se utilizará la información hasta el miedo frente a la «competencia» por el financiamiento o la ansiedad ante las restricciones cada vez mayores que impone el gobierno a las organizaciones de la sociedad civil.
Cuando desarrolles vínculos con otras organizaciones y te pongas en contacto con ellas de manera informal en el estadio previo a dar inicio a la investigación, ser clarx acerca de tus objetivos te ayudará a generar confianza. La transparencia permitirá que quienes participen en la investigación sepan por qué estás recogiendo información y qué beneficios podrá esperar la comunidad de tu trabajo.
Recomendamos asegurarte de que la información se recoja de manera confidencial, preservando el anonimato de quienes respondan. Esto permitirá que lxs participantes se sientan más cómodxs compartiendo información delicada contigo.

Las cooperativas y lugares de trabajo autogestionados por lxs trabajadorxs siempre han ofrecido formas alternativas de generar oportunidades de empleo, ingresos, seguridad social y ahorros y, al mismo tiempo, distribuir los ingresos de formas más comunitarias, sostenibles y seguras.
Pero es más que una oportunidad de empleo: es hacer realidad los sueños y construir economías feministas basadas en la solidaridad y el cuidado mutuo. Es crear un mundo donde nuestras vidas, nuestro trabajo y nuestras comunidades importen.
