Memory as Resistance: A Tribute to WHRDs no longer with us
AWID’s Tribute is an art exhibition honouring feminists, women’s rights and social justice activists from around the world who are no longer with us.
In 2020, we are taking a turn
This year’s tribute tells stories and shares narratives about those who co-created feminist realities, have offered visions of alternatives to systems and actors that oppress us, and have proposed new ways of organising, mobilising, fighting, working, living, and learning.
49 new portraits of feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) are added to the gallery. While many of those we honour have passed away due to old age or illness, too many have been killed as a result of their work and who they are.
This increasing violence (by states, corporations, organized crime, unknown gunmen...) is not only aimed at individual activists but at our joint work and feminist realities.
The stories of activists we honour keep their legacy alive and carry their inspiration forward into our movements’ future work.
The portraits of the 2020 edition are designed by award winning illustrator and animator, Louisa Bertman.
AWID would like to thank the families and organizations who shared their personal stories and contributed to this memorial. We join them in continuing the remarkable work of these activists and WHRDs and forging efforts to ensure justice is achieved in cases that remain in impunity.

The Tribute was first launched in 2012
It took shape with a physical exhibit of portraits and biographies of feminists and activists who passed away at AWID’s 12th International Forum, in Turkey. It now lives as an online gallery, updated every year.
To date, 467 feminists and WHRDs are featured.

Défendre les droits des personnes LGBT*QI
Une étudiante, une scénariste, une leader, une avocate. Les quatre femmes auxquelles nous rendons hommage ci-dessous avait toutes leur propre façon de vivre leur activisme, mais elles avaient en commun la promotion et la défense des droits des personnes lesbiennes, gaies, bisexuelles, trans*, queer et intersexes. Nous vous invitons à vous joindre à nous pour commémorer ces défenseuses, leur travail et l'héritage qu’elles nous ont laissé. Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru
Biography
Jemimah Naburri-Kaheru es una consumada estratega internacional en recursos humanos con gran influencia en la región del Cuerno de África. Anteriormente, se desempeñó como gerente regional de Oficina y Recursos Humanos en Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA, Iniciativa Estratégica para las Mujeres del Cuerno de África). Su influencia se extiende a la dirección de los recursos humanos de más de 70 empleades regionales, debido a que los ingresos anuales de la organización registraron un veloz crecimiento del 40%. A lo largo de su carrera, Jemimah ha organizado iniciativas de reclutamiento sumamente fructíferas, introducido sistemas de desempeño basados en el mérito, y supervisado las relaciones entre el personal y las políticas de recursos humanos. Desempeñó una función crucial brindando apoyo a las estrategias de fuerzas de trabajo globales. Con antecedentes académicos en Estudios sobre el Desarrollo de la Universidad de Makerere (Uganda) y una maestría en Gestión de Recursos Humanos en curso, el compromiso de Jemimah con el desarrollo profesional es más que evidente. Mridula Prasad
Mridula was a strong advocate for the advancement for women’s health at a time when the topic of women’s sexual and reproductive health were considered taboo in Fiji.
The initial works of the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement about sexual and reproductive rights were under her guidance, and in September 1999, the United Nations Population Fund presented her with a regional award for Reproductive Health and Rights. Mridula was a strong, dedicated and tireless campaigner who was passionate about women’s health and empowerment.
She was a valued member of the women’s and feminist movement in Fiji and her contributions will always be remembered. Mridula passed away due to natural causes in 2017.

Ekaete Judith Umoh
Biography
Ekaete Judith Umoh est une défenseure internationale des droits des personnes en situation de handicap et experte en développement inclusif. Elle analyse avec finesse les questions relatives au genre, au handicap et au développement inclusif. Son rêve est d’accroître la visibilité des femmes et des filles en situation de handicap au sein du mouvement féministe international et dans tous les efforts de développement à travers le monde.
Passionnée d’activisme et de politique, Ekaete devient la première femme élue présidente de l’Association nationale des personnes en situation de handicap (Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD), au Nigéria. À ce titre, elle dirige les organisations de personnes en situation de handicap dans la lutte pour la signature de la loi nigériane sur le handicap de 2019, qu’elle défendait sans relâche depuis plus de 17 ans. Par la suite, elle rejoint CBM Global en tant que directrice nationale et joue un rôle pionnier à la tête de son équipe pendant trois ans, pour briser le cercle de la pauvreté et du handicap au Nigéria. Outre son activisme dans le domaine du handicap, Ekaete a été consultante auprès de plusieurs agences de développement, proposant son expertise technique de l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap dans la conception de programmes et projets.

Amal Bayou
Amal fue una destacada política y parlamentaria de Libia.
Fue docente de la Universidad de Benghazi desde 1995 hasta su muerte, en 2017. Amal fue activista de la sociedad civil e integrante de varias iniciativas sociales y políticas. Asistió a las familias de lxs mártires y de lxs desaparecidxs y fue una de lxs fundadorxs de una iniciativa juvenil llamada «Juventud de Benghazi Libia».
En las elecciones parlamentarias de 2014, Amal fue elegida para la Cámara de Representantes con más de 14.000 votos (el mayor número de votos recibido por unx candidatx en las elecciones de 2014). Permanecerá en la memoria de muchxs como una mujer que actuó en política para garantizar un futuro mejor en uno de los contextos de la región más difíciles y afectados por los conflictos.

2. Frame your research
A framework for your research will guide throughout your research process, and the framing document you develop can also serve as a concept note to advisors and partners, and a funding proposal to potential donors.
Before conducting any research:
- Set the goals of your research
- List the key questions you want your research to answer
- Write out the type of data you will need to obtain and review to answer your key questions
- Define the final products you will produce with your research
Your research framing may evolve over time as you refine your questions and gather new information. However, building an initial research framing will allow you to work from a solid foundation.
Goals
To create a strong foundation for your WITM research, it is important to clarify what you hope to accomplish.
For example, one goal of AWID’s WITM global research was to provide rigorous data to prove what we already knew anecdotally: that women’s rights organizations are discrepantly underfunded. With this data, we felt we would be better positioned to influence funders in their decision-making.
Your goals could be to:
- Generate hard data on funding realities and trends to prove or disprove existing myths.
- Gain deeper insight into differences between the perspectives of donors and women’s rights organizations.
- Influence donors in grant-making.
- Add crucial input to key funding debates.
- Explore collaboration between donors and women’s rights organizations on issues that emerge from the research.
Key questions
Frame your research process with key questions that only your research can answer and limit those questions to a specific time frame (e.g. past five years, past year, etc.).
Consider the following points:
- What exactly do you want to learn more about and what is the hypothesis you would like to test? Writing this out will assist you in your thought process.
- Is there existing research on this? If research already exists, it may not make sense to conduct new WITM research unless you feel like the existing research is not extensive or specific enough.
- What time frame do you want to cover in your analysis? For example, will your research analyze only the past year, or several previous years, such as the past five years?
- Are you planning to repeat your survey to collect data in the future?
Choosing a specific timeframe for your research can result in more precise findings than working with an open-ended timeframe. Also, deciding whether you will repeat this research at regular intervals will allow you to set up data collection benchmarks for easy replication and comparison over time.
These were the key questions that guided AWID’s WITM research process:
- What is the current state of women’s organizations’ financial sustainability across the world?
- What external and internal trends are impacting donors’ funding decisions to support women’s organizations and movements?
Type of data
Now that you determined your key questions, you can determine what kind of data will help you answer your key questions. This will allow you to plan the rest of your schedule for your WITM research.
For example, will you conduct a survey that covers an extensive portion of your priority population? Will you analyze the applications that funders are receiving from a certain region? Will you also conduct interviews (recommended)? By determining the types of data you need, you can reach out to external parties who will provide this data early on, and plot out your full schedule accordingly. Some suggested sources of data could be:
- Surveys you create for women’s rights organizations and donors
- Application and grantmaking data from donors funding cycles
- Interviews of prominent activists, organizations, and donors
- Donor data from membership organizations and networks, such as the Foundation Center, regional or national donor affinity groups.
Diverse data sets are a great way to create robust and rich analysis.
The data from AWID’s 2011 Global Survey formed the backbone of our analysis in Watering the Leaves, Starving the Roots report. However, we also collected data from interviews and interactions with several actors in the field, ranging from donors to activists and women’s rights organizations.
Final products
In addition to allowing you to set your schedule, creating an initial plan of what products you will develop will also allow you to work out what resources you need.
For example, will you only produce a long research report or will you also create infographics, brochures and presentations? Depending on your products, you may need to hire a design firm, plan events and so on.
These products will also be the tools you use to achieve your goals, so it is important to keep those goals in mind. For example, is your WITM research exclusively intended as an advocacy tool to influence funders? In that case, your products should allow you to engage with funders at a deep level.
Some sample products:
- Long report for dissemination with key funders and organizations.
Historically, AWID WITM research has centered on a long report, from which AWID distilled other smaller products - see rest of list. - Infographic for viral distribution online
- Short animation demonstrating key findings
- Short brochure(s) distilling your findings and messages
- Articles and blog posts on key findings to draw interest to your larger report
- Seminars or webinars presenting key findings.
Conclusion: Framing your research will give you the big picture
Framing your research to cover goals, key questions, types of data, and final products will allow you to create a well-planned schedule, prepare your resources in advance, and plan a realistic budget.
This will make interactions with external partners easier and allow you to be nimble when unexpected setbacks occur.

Biography
Alejandra se passionne pour les droits des femmes et la justice de genre. Elle rêve de créer un monde qui place le soin en son cœur, celui des personnes comme celui de la nature. Experte féministe en droits humains, elle a travaillé dans des domaines en lien avec le genre, le climat, la justice sociale et économique au sein de diverses organisations internationales. Ses domaines d’expertise comprennent le développement des connaissances et la co-création, la recherche, la facilitation et le plaidoyer. Elle est titulaire d’un master en droits humains de l’université d’Essex et a rédigé et co-élaboré de nombreuses publications, dont l’article « Enraged: Women and Nature » («Enragée: Femmes et Nature ». La campagne Feminist Activism Without Fear (Activisme Féministe Sans Peur) s’appuie sur des entretiens et des recherches menés par Alejandra. Originaire d’Argentine, elle a vécu et travaillé dans plusieurs pays d’Europe et d’Amérique latine au cours des vingt dernières années. Alejandra aime la photographie, la mer, préparer des gâteaux avec sa fille et déguster des plats du monde entier. En tant que mère, elle met un point d’honneur à briser le cycle des schémas répétitifs transgénérationnels. Alejandra puise son énergie et son inspiration auprès des femmes extraordinaires qui font partie de sa vie, et qui vivent aux quatre coins du monde.

Selena “Rocky” Malone
Engagée auprès de jeunes lesbiennes, gays, bisexuels, transgenres, intersexuels, queers, et transgenres (appelés Brotherboys-BB et Sistergirls-SS dans la communauté aborigène en Australie), Rocky faisait preuve de vision et d'un leadership inspirants.
Rocky avait commencé sa carrière auprès de la police du Queensland en tant qu'agent de liaison. Faire une différence était très important pour elle. Elle a mené un travail de soutien impressionnant auprès de jeunes de cette communauté en tant que responsable du service jeunesse « Open Doors » (portes ouvertes). Rocky a œuvré dans des situations complexes liées spécifiquement aux questions de genre et d'identité sexuelle.Elle avait un don naturel dans ce domaine: c’était une leader communautaire solide, une femme sereine, une amie fidèle, une personne aimante et attentionnée ainsi qu’une actrice du changement. Rocky était membre fondatrice d’IndigiLez Leadership and Support Group.
En 2016, à la Cour suprême de Brisbane, l'ancien juge de la Haute Cour, Michael Kirby, a cité le nom de Rocky lorsqu'il a loué le travail du service juridique de la communauté LGBTI au fil des années. Rocky s'est engagée très fermement en faveur des droits humains de la communauté « LGBTIQBBSG », elle a repoussé les limites et induits des changements de manière respectueuse et aimante.
