Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Nous sommes celles et ceux que nous attendions !
Nous commençons une nouvelle année - 2023. Le COVID-19 continue d'infecter et de réinfecter de très nombreuses personnes dans le monde. Nous assistons à la résurgence de gouvernements droites et fascistes, même dans des endroits auxquels nous ne nous attendions peut-être pas comme la Suède. La guerre, les conflits armés et l'augmentation spectaculaire de la militarisation, du militarisme et des dépenses militaires permettent l'accumulation effrénée du capital par quelques-uns, avec la participation d'alliances apparemment « étranges » qui verrouillent les armes, à la fois visiblement et invisiblement, où les élites économiques et politiques du monde Le Nord et le Sud global en profitent au-delà de notre imagination la plus folle. Entre-temps, notre peuple et l'environnement naturel paient des coûts énormes et subissent toutes les conséquences attendues et inattendues.
Comme vous le savez tous et nous tous à l'AWID, les féministes de multiples mouvements à travers le monde résistent et s'organisent contre les multiples visages de la tyrannie, créant des structures alternatives, mettant en œuvre des stratégies de base et construisant des alliances transnationales. Nous générons de la joie, nous inspirons les unes les autres, chantons et dansons dans et contre la culture dominante du meurtre et du cynisme qui semble avoir englouti une si grande partie du monde.
Nous - le personnel et le conseil d'administration - de l'AWID sommes préparés et inspirés plus que jamais pour relever les défis en renforçant nos relations avec nos membres et nos partenaires organisationnels, en rencontrant et en apprenant à connaître ceux que nous n'avons pas encore rencontrés et en faisant ce que nous faisons le mieux : soutenir les mouvements féministes mondiaux. Bien que nous soyons tristes face au départ de notre ancienne Co-Direction générale Cindy et Hakima, notre merveilleuse nouvelle Co-Direction générale Faye et Inna ainsi que notre personnel engagé et créatif ont embrassé le moment qui englobe à la fois les opportunités et les menaces.
Bien sûr, nous tous à l'AWID et tous les membres de notre mouvement le savons : comme l'écrivait la poétesse et militante américaine des Caraïbes June Jordan aux militantes sud-africaines au plus fort du régime d'apartheid : « Nous sommes celles et ceux que nous attendions » !

Barbara Allimadi
Barbara Allimadi was a political and human rights activist from Uganda. In 2012, she co-organized a protest against a televised police assault of Ingrid Turinawe, an opposition politician who had her breast squeezed by a police officer.
During the protest, Barbara, along with other fellow activists stripped to their bras in front of the Central Police Station in Kampala. This came to be known as the infamous ‘bra protest’ in Uganda.
“We settled on the bra protest. We thought it would be most appropriate for what had happened. It’s not like we were saying we don’t respect ourselves. We were disgusted by what had been done.” - Barbara Allimadi, 2013 (Daily Monitor)
With a Degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the London Metropolitan University, Barbara was a network engineer in the United Kingdom and an avid fan of reggae music. She returned to Uganda In 2007, when her mother passed away.
In 2019, she was appointed Coordinator for International and Diaspora Affairs at the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), a political party launched that year by an opposition leader.

Barbara passed away on 27 April 2020.

Khaoula Ksiksi
Biography
Khaoula Ksiksi est une fervente défenseuse de la justice, de l’équité et de la libération. Dans son rôle de conseillère en matière de genre, d’égalité, de diversité et d’inclusion (GEDI), elle œuvre à faire de l’inclusion une réalité concrète, pas simplement un concept politique, au sein des programmes humanitaires et des interventions en situation de crise. Elle collabore avec diverses équipes pour combattre l’oppression structurelle en déployant des approches audacieuses et transformatrices qui s’appuient sur les expériences vécues.
Son activisme a débuté au cœur du mouvement antiraciste tunisien. Au sein de l’organisation Mnemty, elle a contribué à l’adoption de la première législation anti-discrimination du pays, obligeant la société tunisienne à reconnaître l’existence de l’injustice raciale. Par la suite, elle a co-fondé le collectif Voix des Femmes Tunisiennes Noires, une initiative visant à valoriser le leadership des femmes noires, à développer des réseaux de solidarité et à revendiquer une visibilité dans une société qui tend à les réduire au silence.
Khaoula est également l’une des fondatrices de Falgatna, un mouvement queer-féministe radical qui œuvre pour la défense des droits OSIGEGCS, tout en apportant son soutien aux communautés LGBTQI+ par des actions directes, des stratégies de cyberrésistance et un plaidoyer centré sur les survivant·es.
Auparavant, elle a dirigé des projets régionaux féministes et de justice climatique à la Fondation Rosa Luxemburg en Afrique du Nord et de l’Ouest.
Son travail est guidé par une conviction profonde : personne n’est libre tant que nous ne le sommes pas toustes. Son activisme est à la fois un combat et une lettre d’amour à son peuple, à ses communautés et au monde que nous méritons.

Biography
Cinthia a collaboré avec des ONG au Mexique, au Pérou et en Équateur sur des projets liés à la mobilité humaine, à l’environnement et au plaidoyer politique, en recourant à la narration transmédia et au développement web. Elle est titulaire d’un master en anthropologie visuelle de la FLACSO Équateur et d’un diplôme en animation et arts numériques de l’Institut technologique de Monterrey. Elle adore expérimenter avec le code et les médias visuels pour créer de nouvelles formes de narration et continuer à explorer les liens entre l’art, la technologie et le changement social.

Feminists have long asserted that the personal is political. Crear, Resister, Transform Festival created spaces for feminists to discuss issues around body, gender and sexualities, and explored the interconnections of how these issues are both deeply embodied experiences, and simultaneously a terrain where rights are constantly disputed and at risk in society.
The power of feminist movements lie in how we organise and take coordinated action, not only amongst our own communities and movements, but with allied social justice causes and groups. This space provided opportunities for movements to share and strengthen organizing and tactical strategies with each other.
The COVID-19 global health pandemic has made the failures of neo-liberal capitalism even more apparent than ever before, exposed the cracks in our systems, and highlighted the need and opportunities to build new realities. A feminist economic and social recovery requires all of us to make it together. This journal edition in partnership with Kohl: a Journal for Body and Gender Research, will explore feminist solutions, proposals and realities for transforming our current world, our bodies and our sexualities.

We welcome applications across the full range of thematic areas and intersections important to feminist and gender justice movements. In the application form, you will be able to mark more than one theme that fits your activity.
- Free Bodies, Free Spirits: all things bodily autonomy, gender and sexuality, reproductive health and rights, freedom from gender-based violence, freedom to live in safety, pleasure and joy in our diverse bodies, identities and communities, and much, much more.
- Resisting Anti-Rights: locally and globally, feminists are leading the way in resisting all forms of intersectional oppressions, including fascisms, fundamentalisms, and authoritarian regimes; we have a lot to share and strategize with each other about.
- Movements and Organizing: let us get to know each other’s movements. From navigation of power (internal and external) to protection strategies in the face of the repression of women and gender-diverse human rights defenders, from alliance-building to creative and successful forms of organizing, let’s learn and be inspired by each other.
- Economic Justice and Feminist Economies: this theme encompasses all feminist efforts to transform our economies, from challenging dominant extractive models and defending labor rights to embodying and living feminist economic practices and alternatives in everyday life.
- Funding/Resourcing Activism: securing much-needed funding is a shared challenge for movements across the world; let us together unpack the feminist funding ecosystem, from critical analysis to first-hand experiences and practical ways to fund feminist work.
- Climate, Environmental Justice, Land and Water: ecological and climate justice has deep roots in many of our movements and communities; from ancient traditions to futuristic visions, from ecology villages to campaigns to end extractivism and health justice, we invite a full scope of activities on all aspects of climate and environmental justice.
- Militarization, War and Conflict: we aim to spotlight feminist organizing, analysis and experiences often on the frontline of crisis response and helping to sustain life, community and justice in the harshest times of war and protracted conflict.
- Decolonization: decolonization is central to each and every one of our themes, yet it also stands on its own, as a key feminist agenda of resistance and world-building in many colonial and post-colonial realities.
- Digital Realities and Feminist Tech: we welcome an opportunity to celebrate the incredible feminist initiatives that transform digital worlds, challenge big tech power structures, and democratize technology as truly by and for the people.
- Healing Justice: there is an incredible diversity of approaches to collective care and healing justice. Worldwide, healers and movements are reclaiming healing justice as a political principle, a set of practices, a learning journey, a way of life, and much more.

Is AWID a feminist organization?
No care economies without domestic workers!
A Manifesto
As feminist and labour movements, together in solidarity, we articulate the following points as a collective vision for care economies with domestic workers rights at the centre. We call on feminist and social movements to join the call to rethink the economy with care at its centre recognising the rights, agency and leadership of domestic worker movements.
Our manifesto is a response to a complex context.
Domestic and care work is in the limelight after the COVID-19 global pandemic as it provided the means to carry the world through multiple intersecting crises at the global scale. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other multilateral institutions also acknowledge the importance of care and domestic work in sustaining the world’s economy. However, it is our analysis that this recognition most often takes an instrumentalist approach (i.e. care work sustains the ‘productive’ economy) focused on profiteering from care work without recognizing care as a human right and public good, or providing recognition and rights to the workers undertaking the bulk of this labour.
