WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.
Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.
Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;
Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:
Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw es una feminista panafricana dedicada a la justicia social y la construcción de comunidad. Es Licenciada en Estudios de Género y Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad de Columbia Británica (UBC) y posee una maestría en Estudios de Género y Derecho de la Escuela de Estudios Orientales y Africanos de la Universidad de Londres. Anteriormente, trabajó en administración académica y apoyo para estudiantes internacionales. Asimismo, se desempeñó como investigadora y facilitadora en espacios feministas y sin fines de lucro. También ha trabajado como voluntaria en organizaciones no gubernamentales, incluida Plan International, donde cumplió funciones administrativas. Antes de asumir sus funciones actuales, se desempeñó en logística y apoyo administrativo para AWID. Marianne nació en Etiopía, se crió en Ruanda y, actualmente, reside en Tkaronto/Toronto (Canadá). Le encanta leer, viajar y pasar el tiempo con su familia y amistades. Colectivo Moriviví is an all women artistic collective. Our artistic production consists of muralism, community-led muralism, and protest performance/actions. Our work is about democratizing art and bringing the narratives of Puerto Rican communities to the public sphere to create spaces in which they are validated. We believe that through artivism we can promote consciousness on social issues and strengthen our collective memory.
As part of their participation in AWID’s Artist Working Group, Colectivo Morivivi gathered a diverse group of members, partners and staff to facilitate a collaborative process of dreaming into, informing, and deciding on the content for a community mural through a multi-stage co-creation process. The project began with a remote conceptualization with feminists from different parts of the planet brought together by AWID, and then it evolved to its re-contextualization and realization in Puerto Rico. We were honored to have the input of local artists Las Nietas de Nonó(@lasnietasdenono), the participation of local women in the Community Painting Session, the logistics support from the Municipality of Caguas, and FRIDA Young Feminist Fund’s additional support to the collective.
The mural explores the transcendence of borders by presenting bodies like a map, in an embrace that highlights the intersection of the different feminist manifestations, practices and realities.

Son art était destiné aux femmes et parlait des femmes. En tant que féministe lesbienne, pendant un temps séparatiste, elle s'est engagée à créer des espaces réservés aux femmes. En 1976, elle a acheté un terrain qui est toujours géré par des femmes qui y séjournent pour créer de l'art. Sue a pris une position farouche sur la question de la protection des femmes et des filles.
Avec son approche révolutionnaire, futuriste et anthropologique, elle remplissait chaque pièce dans laquelle elle entrait avec une intelligence et une excentricité authentiques, ainsi qu’un humour et un esprit impitoyable. Ses idées sur la conscience et la créativité continuent à inspirer beaucoup de gens.

Kamee est un·e artiste interdisciplinaire, narrateur·rice, producteur·rice, interprète, organisateur·rice, soignant·e, “queerdo” et sorcier·ère. Né·e dans une famille arménienne déplacée de la région d’Asie du Sud-Ouest et Afrique du Nord et élevé·e dans une banlieue immigrante de Toronto, son travail s’imprègne de pratiques relationnelles et génératives orientées vers la réhabilitation ancestrale, la fiction visionnaire et le futurisme diasporique. Kamee est titulaire de diplômes en cinéma, en sciences politiques et en art-thérapie, auxquels s’ajoute un Doctorat en Psychologie Communautaire et de Libération. Iel a créé, produit, tourné et présenté un vaste ensemble de travaux qui comprennent l’animation d’ateliers, les arts visuels et médiatiques, des performances et des expositions mises en scène et immersives, des magazines, des anthologies et des films. Ses projets ont été soutenus par des organismes de financement locaux et nationaux à travers le Canada, les États-Unis et l'Arménie. Kamee a été écrivain·e nominé·e Pushcart et ancien·ne élève littéraire du VONA et du Banff Centre for Arts. Iel fut primé·e pour avoir créé des pièces de théâtre qui ont été publiées dans des anthologies ayant reçu le prix Lambda. Les documentaires qu'iel a produit ont été soutenus par Sundance, Visions du Réel, HotDocs et Catapult. Kamee vit actuellement entre l'Arménie et le Canada.
Los actores anti-derechos adoptan una estrategia doble. Además de atacar abiertamente al sistema multilateral, los actores anti-derechos también socavan los derechos humanos desde adentro. Se involucran con el fin de cooptar procesos, consolidar normativas regresivas, y erosionar responsabilidades.
El involucramiento de los actores anti-derechos en espacios internacionales de derechos humanos tiene un objetivo principal: socavar el sistema y su capacidad de respetar, proteger y satisfacer los derechos humanos para todas las personas, y de exigir rendición de cuentas a los Estados miembro por su violación. Algunas tácticas anti-derechos operan por fuera de la ONU, e incluyen la deslegitimación y la presión política para desfinanciar a la ONU, o para que ciertos Estados miembro se retiren de acuerdos internacionales sobre derechos humanos. En los últimos años, algunos actores antiderechos han logrado una creciente influencia dentro de la ONU. Sus tácticas internas incluyen la capacitación de representantes, la distorsión de los marcos de derechos humanos, el debilitamiento de acuerdos sobre derechos humanos, la infiltración en comités de organizaciones no gubernamentales, las solicitudes de ingreso al Consejo Económico y Social bajo nombres neutrales, la infiltración en los espacios de la juventud, y las presiones para ubicar a actores antiderechos en posiciones clave.

Lara was one of the first openly-transgender radio hosts on a mainstream station. She worked hard to shine a light on LGBTI issues.
Lara’s activism started at a young age when she would vocally defend her right to dress and behave as she felt comfortable to members of her community who didn’t yet understand what it meant to be transgender.

Joanne is an African feminist who is passionate about dismantling gender inequalities on the African continent. Joanne has worked with a number of global organizations, media and think tanks including Amnesty International, Wrthy, Local Development Research Institute, BBC, East African Community (EAC) among others.She serves on a couple of boards including Freely in hope-an NGO based in Kenya and Zambia that seeks to equip survivors and advocates to lead in ending sexual violence and Msingi Trust-a movement of activists that meet at the confluence of faith and human rights. She has a Masters in Business Administration, Masters of Public Policy and a Bachelor of Laws. She is a book junkie with a penchant for fiction.
