Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

En tant que mouvements féministes et mouvements pour les droits des travailleur·euses, nous articulons en solidarité les points suivants dans le cadre d’une vision collective des économies des soins qui plaçant les travailleuses domestiques au centre
Notre manifeste est une réponse à un contexte complexe :
Le travail domestique et des soins est sur le devant de la scène depuis la pandémie de COVID-19, car il a permis à tout le monde de continuer à fonctionner pendant les crises mondiales. La Banque Mondiale, le Fond Monétaire International et autres institutions multilatérales reconnaissent également l’importance du travail des soins et domestique dans la pérennisation de l’économie. Cette attention répond cependant généralement à une approche instrumentale - dans laquelle le travail des soins soutient l’économie « productive » - centrée sur la réalisation de profits, qui ne reconnaît pas les soins comme un droit humain et un bien public et ne prend pas en compte les travailleuses qui assurent une grande partie du labeur.
Samira Khalil
Samira fue una activista siria bajo el régimen de Bashar al-Asad.
Desde muy joven, se opuso a todas las formas de despotismo, especialmente en relación al régimen autoritario en el que vivía. En 2013, Samira fue secuestrada junto a otrxs tres destacadxs activistas. Se cree que se la llevaron del Centro para la Documentación de Violaciones de Duma, en el área rural de Damasco.
El principal sospechoso de su desaparición es el Ejército del Islam (el cual niega estar involucrado). No ha habido una investigación formal de la desaparición de Samira y desde entonces no se ha sabido nada de ella. Samira estaba comprometida con su país y se negaba a abandonar Siria hasta tanto no sintiera que su trabajo por el empoderamiento de las mujeres y en la documentación de los crímenes ya no fuera necesario.

While we dream of a feminist world, there are those who are already building and living it. These are our Feminist Realities!
What are Feminist Realities?
Feminist Realities are the living, breathing examples of the just world we are co-creating. They exist now, in the many ways we live, struggle and build our lives.
Feminist Realities go beyond resisting oppressive systems to show us what a world without domination, exploitation and supremacy look like.
These are the narratives we want to unearth, share and amplify throughout this Feminist Realities journey.
Transforming Visions into Lived Experiences
Through this initiative, we:

Create and amplify alternatives: We co-create art and creative expressions that center and celebrate the hope, optimism, healing and radical imagination that feminist realities inspire.

Build knowledge: We document, demonstrate & disseminate methodologies that will help identify the feminist realities in our diverse communities.

Advance feminist agendas: We expand and deepen our collective thinking and organizing to advance just solutions and systems that embody feminist values and visions.

Mobilize solidarity actions: We engage feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements and allies in sharing, exchanging and jointly creating feminist realities, narratives and proposals at the 14th AWID International Forum.
The AWID International Forum
As much as we emphasize the process leading up to, and beyond, the four-day Forum, the event itself is an important part of where the magic happens, thanks to the unique energy and opportunity that comes with bringing people together.
We expect the next Forum to:

Build the power of Feminist Realities, by naming, celebrating, amplifying and contributing to build momentum around experiences and propositions that shine light on what is possible and feed our collective imaginations

Replenish wells of hope and energy as much needed fuel for rights and justice activism and resilience

Strengthen connectivity, reciprocity and solidarity across the diversity of feminist movements and with other rights and justice-oriented movements

Lorsqu'elle est devenue directrice générale de l'Agence nationale pour la gestion et le contrôle des aliments et drogues (NAFDAC) entre 2001 et 2008, son travail d’envergure révolutionnaire a initié un changement de paradigme au sein de la fonction publique nigériane. Au cours de son mandat, elle a mené des réformes dans l'application des politiques et des réglementations qui ont permis de réduire de manière radicale le nombre de faux médicaments qui ont affecté le secteur pharmaceutique nigérian.
Après avoir incarné la réalité d’une femme courageuse et compétente qui a défié les maux d’une société à dominante patriarcale et qui a conduit au changement, elle est devenue une icône de l’émancipation des femmes. Entre 2008 et 2010 elle a été nommée ministre de l'Information et de la Communication.
Elle est décédée des suites d'un cancer et laisse dans le deuil son mari, ses six enfants et ses trois petits-enfants.

Todos estos lugares autoorganizados se conectarán en forma virtual con la sede del Foro en Bangkok. Como en el caso de las personas que se conecten en línea, lxs participantes de los nodos podrán facilitar actividades, unirse a conversaciones y disfrutar de un programa rico y diverso.

Her clients have included ActionAid Nigeria, The BBC World Trust, Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), and AWID. She has a master’s degree in Journalism from Syracuse University and has worked as a writer, editor, and researcher in Nigeria, Canada, and the United States. She is also the non-fiction editor of Anathema magazine and co-founder of Omenana, a magazine of African Speculative Fiction. Esta publicación (zine) colaborativa surgió de una serie de círculos de intercambio que reunieron a feministas de todo el mundo durante 2022. El propósito fue intercambiar ideas y aprender mutuamente de qué manera las comunidades responden a la crisis climática en diversos contextos locales.
Nadine Ramaroson
Nadine was a role model to many for her work supporting women and the most vulnerable in her community. She was committed to helping the poor and homeless in particular.
Though her death was reported as an accident, the Ramaroson family, led by her father, André Ramaroson led an investigation that pointed to evidence that she had been murdered. She is reported to have died in a fatal accident occurred between Soanierano - Ivongo and Ste Marie - a story that has been refuted by her family.
She received numerous death threats for her bold political positions. Her case remains in court in Antananarivo (the capital of Madagascar).

- La Conférence de Doha visait à dresser le bilan de la mise en œuvre du Consensus de Monterrey. Les six domaines du financement du développement y ont été examinés mais les progrès tangibles constatés ont été peu nombreux.
- Si la Conférence de Doha a permis d’aller au-delà de Monterrey du point de vue de l’égalité des genres, ses résultats restent insuffisants dans ce domaine. Dans une déclaration , le WWG on FfD (Groupe de travail des femmes sur le FdD) a souligné le fait que les engagements en faveur de l’égalité des genres figurant dans la Déclaration de Doha ne prendraient sens que si les questions systémiques qui sous-tendent la pauvreté et l’inégale répartition du pouvoir et des ressources dans l’économie politique mondiale étaient fermement traitées.
- À Doha, un forum de la société civile s’est tenu en parallèle à la conférence principale. Rassemblée au sein du Groupe des ONG de Doha pour le financement du développement (Doha NGO Group on Financing for Development), la société civile a exigé des changements économiques structurels ainsi que des politiques qui placent les droits des peuples au premier rang de leur liste de priorités et qui respectent et promeuvent les droit humains.

Panel: en las discusiones de panel, explora un tema o un desafío desde diferentes perspectivas, o comparte un aprendizaje o una experiencia, con preguntas del público a continuación, si el tiempo lo permite.
Programa de entrevistas: puedes tener una conversación más espontánea al estilo de un programa de entrevistas. Estos programas de entrevistas pueden ser una conversación entre varias personas, facilitadas por la persona que presenta el programa. Las preguntas del público pueden determinar la dirección de la conversación.
Conversación: estas pueden tomar la forma de «world café», de pecera y de otras metodologías que facilitan el involucramiento activo de lxs participantes en las conversaciones. Es un formato sumamente participativo.
Taller: actividades o clases interactivas que invitan a lxs participantes a adquirir nuevas habilidades en cualquiera y todas las áreas de la vida y el activismo.
Sesión estratégica: esta es una invitación a pensar en profundidad sobre un tema o una estrategia, junto con otras personas. Un espacio para aprender unxs de otrxs: qué funciona, qué no funciona, y cómo desarrollamos estrategias nuevas y colectivas para crear los mundos que soñamos.
Círculo para compartir [«birds of a feather»]: ideal para grupos pequeños, en un ambiente más íntimo, para oírse unxs a otrxs, iniciar una conversación y tratar con cuidado temas que pueden ser específicos, sensibles y complejos.
Artes – Taller participativo: actividades participativas de arte y expresión creativa. Ya sea a través de artes visuales, teatro, cine, pintura mural, danza, música, creación de artesanías y obras de arte colectivas, etc., apreciamos todas las ideas que celebren el arte y la creatividad feministas como formas de cambio social, sanación, expresión y transformación.
Artes – Performances, instalaciones y exhibiciones: son bienvenidas todas las propuestas que ofrezcan a lxs participantes del Foro nuevas experiencias y perspectivas, que expandan nuestros horizontes y que nos desafíen e inspiren para pensar, sentir y organizarnos de manera innovadora.
Sanación: actividades diversas diseñadas tanto para grupos como para personas individuales: desde aprender técnicas de relajación hasta hablar sobre la prevención del desgaste, desde prácticas informadas por el trauma para el cuidado de nuestro cuerpo, nuestra mente y nuestra alma hasta la reparación de fisuras dentro de nuestros movimientos.
