AWID Forum: Co-creating Feminist Futures
In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Biography
Durante sus 38 años de carrera, Debbie Stothard ha trabajado con diferentes comunidades y activistas para involucrar en los derechos humanos y la justicia a los Estados, organizaciones intergubernamentales y otras partes interesadas a lo largo de Asia, África, Europa y las Américas. Su trabajo está enfocado en las prioridades temáticas de las empresas y en los derechos humanos, en la prevención de las atrocidades y en el liderazgo de las mujeres. Por ello, ha sido facilitadora o persona de referencia en casi 300 eventos de capacitación durante los últimos 15 años. La mayoría fueron talleres orientados a las bases, desarrollados en el terreno, centrados en la incidencia en derechos humanos, alfabetización económica, en empresas y derechos humanos, y en justicia transicional y prevención de las atrocidades. Su trabajo en justicia transicional y prevención de las atrocidades ha estado enfocado principalmente en Burma/Myanmar, aunque también ha proveído asesoramiento para responder a situaciones de otros países alrededor del mundo.
Entre 1981 y 1996, Debbie trabajó como periodista especializada en crímenes, activista estudiantil, analista política, académica, consejera de gobierno y proveedora de comida en Malasia y Australia, mientras era voluntaria en causas de derechos humanos. En 1996, fundó ALTSEAN-Burma, que encabezó una variedad de programas de innovación y empoderamiento en derechos humanos. Entre ellos, el programa intensivo permanente de liderazgo de ALTSEAN para diferentes mujeres jóvenes de Burma, que, durante los últimos 22 años, ha ayudado a fortalecer y ampliar el liderazgo de las mujeres en las zonas afectadas por el conflicto. Elle contribue à diverses émissions de radio et de télévision et a suivi une formation de coach auprès de la Certified Coaches Alliance. La mission de Lindiwe est d’éradiquer les obstacles qui entravent les conversations autour du bien-être sexuel et de donner à ses client·e·s les moyens de mieux se comprendre afin qu’ils·elles puissent avoir un mode de vie et des relations plus saines et holistiques.

À l’approche de la CSW69, nous co-organisons de courageuses initiatives horizontales, sur le terrain et en ligne, pour échanger des stratégies et bâtir un pouvoir féministe au-delà de Beijing+30. Notre présence collective perturbe les mécanismes d’exclusion des institutions dans ces espaces tout en soutenant les mouvements qui s’organisent autour d’alternatives féministes aux systèmes d’oppression.

Elle trabaja en la organización para el cambio de narrativas y movilizar recursos para apoyar los movimientos de justicia racial y climática en todo el mundo. Ha producido proyectos mediáticos para potenciar el poder de la población migrante y alzarse contra la intervención militar estadounidense en toda América Latina, con Deep Dish TV y el Comité de Solidaridad con Centroamérica de Portland. Elle es une orgullose integrante del Proyecto Audre Lorde y egresade del movimiento de los United World Colleges (UWC).
