Women Human Rights Defenders
WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.
The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.
Risks and threats targeting WHRDs
WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.
By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:
- Physical assault and death
- Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
- Judicial harassment and criminalization
- Burnout
A collaborative, holistic approach to safety
We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership
- to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
- to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk
We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:
- emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
- documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
- promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
- building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles
Our Actions
We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to strengthen responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

Increasing the visibility and recognition of WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Around the world, feminist, women’s rights, and allied movements are confronting power and reimagining a politics of liberation. The contributions that fuel this work come in many forms, from financial and political resources to daily acts of resistance and survival.
AWID’s Resourcing Feminist Movements (RFM) Initiative shines a light on the current funding ecosystem, which range from self-generated models of resourcing to more formal funding streams.
Through our research and analysis, we examine how funding practices can better serve our movements. We critically explore the contradictions in “funding” social transformation, especially in the face of increasing political repression, anti-rights agendas, and rising corporate power. Above all, we build collective strategies that support thriving, robust, and resilient movements.
Our Actions
Recognizing the richness of our movements and responding to the current moment, we:

Create and amplify alternatives: We amplify funding practices that center activists’ own priorities and engage a diverse range of funders and activists in crafting new, dynamic models for resourcing feminist movements, particularly in the context of closing civil society space.

Build knowledge: We explore, exchange, and strengthen knowledge about how movements are attracting, organizing, and using the resources they need to accomplish meaningful change.

Advocate: We work in partnerships, such as the Count Me In! Consortium, to influence funding agendas and open space for feminist movements to be in direct dialogue to shift power and money.

María Verónica Reina
María était reconnue au niveau mondial pour son leadership extraordinaire au sein de la communauté des personnes handicapées.
Elle a représenté l'International Disability and Development Consortium (consortium international sur le développement et le handicap) lors de la négociation de la Convention des Nations Unies relative aux droits des personnes handicapées (2001-2006). Son travail a été consacré à la réalisation de l'objectif de la Convention, à savoir la réalisation des droits humains universels par, pour et avec les personnes handicapées pour un monde inclusif, accessible et durable.
Selon ses propres mots, son leadership consistait à « … servir la communauté des personnes handicapées, en commençant par de petites tâches que d'autres pourraient ne pas vouloir faire».
Elle est décédée le 27 octobre 2017 dans sa ville natale de Rosario, en Argentine.

Arrancar de raíz los fascismos y los fundamentalismos
En todo el mundo lxs defensorxs feministas, por los derechos de las mujeres y por la justicia de género están enfrentándose a las agendas fascistas y fundamentalistas. Estas fuerzas opresivas atacan a las mujeres, a las personas que tienen una identidad o expresión de género y/u orientación sexual no convencional y a otras comunidades oprimidas.
Las ideologías discriminatorias están socavando y cooptando nuestros sistemas y estándares de derechos humanos, para convertirlos en dominio de unxs pocxs.. Por esto, la iniciativa Promoción de los Derechos Universales y la Justicia (PDUJ) promueve la universalidad de los derechos, el principio fundante según el cual los derechos humanos les pertenecen a todxs sin excepción, sin importar quién sean.
Creamos un espacio para que los movimientos feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y de justicia de género y sus aliadxs puedan reconocer la influencia y el impacto de lxs actorxs anti-derechos., pensar estrategias y realizar acciones colectivas para contrarrestarlos También buscamos promover los derechos de las mujeres y los marcos, las normas y las propuestas feministas así como proteger y promover la universalidad de los derechos.
Nuestras acciones
A través de esta iniciativa, nosotrxs:

Construimos conocimiento: Apoyamos a los movimientos feministas, de derechos de las mujeres y de justicia de género difundiendo y divulgando conocimiento y mensajes clave sobre lxs actorxs anti-derechos, sus estrategias y el impacto que tienen sobre los sistemas internacionales de derechos humanos a través del liderazgo de AWID en el Observatorio sobre la Universalidad de los Derechos (OURs)*.

Promovemos agendas feministas: Nos aliamos con diversos actores en espacios internacionales de derechos humanos, incluyendo el Consejo de Derechos Humanos, la Comisión sobre Población y Desarrollo, la Comisión sobre la Condición Social y Jurídica de las Mujeres y la Asamblea General de la ONU. .

Generamos y amplificamos alternativas: Junto con nuestra membresía, buscamos que los movimientos que se organizan a nivel local, nacional y regional en distintos espacios conozcan y exijan que se apliquen los compromisos, resoluciones y normas internacionales.

Movilizamos la acción solidaria: Actuamos junto a las defensoras de derechos humanos, incluyendo a activistas trans e intersex, así como a lxs jóvenes feministas, para enfrentar los fundamentalismos y fascismos y para llamar la atención sobre situaciones de peligro.

Asma Jahangir
Asma was a leading Pakistani rights activist, fearless critic of the military’s interference in politics and a staunch defender of the rule of law.
She was the founding chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, an independent group, and was a trustee of the International Crisis Group. She won international awards and served as the United Nations rapporteur on human rights and extrajudicial killings.
She is remembered fondly by colleagues and friends at AWID
“With her life, Asma rewrote the history that many of us were told as women. Asma changed the world. She changed it in Pakistan, and she changed it in our imaginations."

Olivia Arévalo Lomas
Olivia era la líder espiritual del pueblo indígena Shipibo Konibo.
Sabia mujer indígena y abuela, era conocida por practicar la medicina tradicional y cantar las canciones sagradas de su pueblo (Íkaros). Olivia Arévalo fue una activa defensora de los derechos culturales y ambientales de su pueblo. Su asesinato tuvo lugar en un contexto de conflicto territorial entre la comunidad shipibo y las empresas que quieren apropiarse de sus tierras para cultivar palma aceitera.
Integrantes de su comunidad han dicho: «Su muerte es una agresión contra toda la comunidad shipibo. Ella era la memoria viviente de su pueblo».

2018 : Soutenir les mouvements féministes pour qu'ils s'épanouïssent et dérangent
Ce rapport retrace et célèbre la première année du nouveau plan stratégique de l'AWID, et fait un retour en arrière sur nos premiers pas vers les objectifs visés, à savoir soutenir les mouvements féministes pour qu'ils prospèrent, remettent en question les programmes anti-droits et co-créent des réalités féministes.

Nous avons travaillé avec les féministes pour bousculer les programmes anti-droits et avons remporté d'importantes victoires au sein du système des Nations Unies avec l’inclusion, dans un certain nombre de résolutions, de termes novateurs sur la discrimination structurelle, les droits sexuels et les obligations des États. Oui, le système multilatéral est en crise et a besoin d'être sérieusement renforcé, mais ces victoires sont importantes car elles contribuent à la légitimité des revendications féministes et fournissent aux mouvements féministes davantage de points de pression et d'élan pour faire avancer nos programmes.
Nous avons essayé et testé différentes façons d’acquérir des connaissances avec les mouvements féministes à travers des webinaires, des podcasts et des discussions ‘en direct’. Nous avons développé des guides d’animation avec des éducateurs et éducatrices populaires pour récupérer des connaissances dans l'intérêt de la justice sociale et la justice de genre, même sur un sujet aussi opaque en apparence que les flux financiers illicites. Nous avons sollicité des blogs et des opinions sur la façon dont les groupes féministes se financent et se ressourcent, ainsi que fait la lumière sur les menaces qui pèsent sur nos systèmes de droits humains.
Au sein de l’AWID, nous avons pratiqué le leadership partagé et tiré des leçons de cette approche, et narré le récit des épreuves et des tribulations propres à la codirection d’une organisation mondiale virtuelle. Nous n’avons pas de réponse définitive quant à la forme que revêt le leadership féministe, mais un an plus tard, nous avons conscience que cet engagement continu envers l’apprentissage et l’expérimentation nous a permis de continuer à bâtir une organisation à laquelle nous sommes tou-te-s ravi-e-s de contribuer.
À l’heure où nous revenons sur l’année qui vient de s’écouler, nous souhaitons remercier tou-te-s nos ami-e-s et allié-e-s, collègues et camarades qui ont donné de leur temps et partagé avec nous leur richesse de savoir et de sagesse. Nous souhaitons remercier nos membres qui ont contribué à l’élaboration de notre plan stratégique et se sont joint-e-s à nous pour formuler des revendications féministes. Ce travail ne pourrait être réalisé sans vous.
