Women Human Rights Defenders

WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.

The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.

Risks and threats targeting WHRDs  

WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.

By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:

  • Physical assault and death
  • Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
  • Judicial harassment and criminalization
  • Burnout

A collaborative, holistic approach to safety

We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership

  • to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
  • to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk

We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:

  • emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
  • documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
  • promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
  • building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles

Our Actions

We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

  • Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to  strengthen  responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

  • Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa  Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

  • Increasing the visibility and recognition of  WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

  • Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Ritu est une technologue féministe qui apporte son expérience au secteur non lucratif, animée par une passion pour l'utilisation d'approches innovantes pour trouver des solutions technologiques féministes. Titulaire d'un master en technologie des applications informatiques de l'Institut indien de technologie, son rôle au sein de l'AWID couvre un large spectre de responsabilités. De la supervision de la sécurité numérique et gestion des serveurs à l'administration des bases de données, en passant par le renforcement des capacités, l'évaluation technologique, la mise en œuvre de logiciels et de solutions cloud, Ritu veille à ce que l'infrastructure informatique de l'AWID soit résiliente et efficace. Avant de rejoindre l'AWID, elle a joué un rôle central dans l'avancement des initiatives technologiques des secteurs de la promotion de la santé et de l'environnement, alimentée par son engagement à tirer parti de la technologie pour le bien social.

Carol Thomas fue una pionera en el trabajo por los derechos sexuales y reproductivos de las mujeres en Sudáfrica. Fue una ginecóloga de gran talento y la fundadora del WomenSpace [EspacioDeMujeres].

No sólo las empleó en su práctica, sino que también abogó por proporcionar formas no tradicionales de asistencia sanitaria a las mujeres, ofreciendo servicios de alta calidad, empáticos y accesibles.

"Ella recibió no sólo la alegría de los embarazos y la llegada de nuevxs bebés, sino también la ansiedad que puede generar la infertilidad, un parto prematuro, el cáncer femenino, así como también la angustia de los abortos espontáneos y lxs mortinatxs". Helen Moffett

Carol pensó en nuevos paradigmas cuyo centro de atención fuesen las necesidades de las mujeres con menor acceso a los servicios y derechos que puede aportar una sociedad:

"El entorno socioeconómico imperante en el que nos encontramos hoy se traduce en una carga desproporcionada de enfermedades y desempleo que las mujeres tienen que soportar... Como mujer negra, desfavorecida en el pasado, tengo una idea clara de lo que está sucediendo en nuestras comunidades". - Carol Thomas

La innovadora y multipremiada empresa social de Carol, "“iMobiMaMa”, utilizaba los quioscos móviles y la tecnología interactiva para conectar directamente a las mujeres con servicios de salud prenatal y reproductiva, información y apoyo en  las comunidades de toda Sudáfrica. 

Carol apoyó a las mujeres tanto en los embarazos deseados como en los no deseados, y fue mentora de muchxs enfermerxs y doctorxs a lo largo de su vida.

Fue calificada, además, como ginecóloga de referencia "para las personas trans que podían recibir de ella una atención afirmativa. Ella supo cómo manejarse cuando muchas personas no tenían todavía en claro el lenguaje o los pronombres. Sus mantas calientes, su capacidad para escuchar y decir lo que necesitabas oír eran muy reconfortantes." -Marion Lynn Stevens.

Carol Thomas falleció el 12 de abril de 2019 a causa de una serie de complicaciones tras un doble trasplante de pulmón, en el punto más álgido de su carrera profesional.

Los homenajes que llegaron después de su muerte inesperada se refieren a ella de muchas formas: como " modelo a seguir, mujer guerrera, innovadora, líder dinámica, rompe-moldes, dínamo, científica brillante, doctora compasiva".

Sin duda, Carol Thomas será recordada y honrada por ser todo esto y mucho más.

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw

Biography

Marianne Mesfin Asfaw is a Pan-African feminist who is dedicated to social justice and building community. She has a BA in Gender Studies and International Relations from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and an MA in Gender Studies and Law from SOAS University of London. She has previously worked in academic administration and international student support, and has worked as a researcher and facilitator in feminist and non-profit spaces. She has also worked and volunteered at non-governmental organizations including Plan International in administrative roles. Prior to taking up her current role she worked in logistics and administrative support at AWID. She is from Ethiopia, was raised in Rwanda and is currently based in Tkaronto/Toronto, Canada. She enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. In the warmer months she can be found strolling around familiar neighborhoods in search of obscure cafés and bookstores to wander into.

Mereani Naisua Senebici, que l’on appelait aussi « Sua », a été membre de l’Association des jeunes femmes chrétiennes (YWCA) des Fidji pendant de longues années.

En plus d’avoir travaillé avec divers groupes de femmes dans des contextes multiraciaux, ruraux et urbains, elle s’est impliquée dans le soutien et la promotion des droits des femmes et des jeunes femmes.

Au YWCA de Lautoka, elle travaillait avec des femmes d’origine indienne et comptait parmi les pionnières du développement de la pratique sportive et la participation des femmes et athlètes trans localement.

« Les membres du YWCA des Fidji ont profondément aimé Sua pour son dévouement et son soutien inébranlable envers tous les efforts déployés par l’organisation » – Tupou Vere

Mereani faisait partie de la House of Sarah (HoS), une initiative de l’Association of Anglican Women (AAW) lancée en 2009, un organisme de sensibilisation autour des violences basées sur le genre et de soutien des femmes victimes de violence. Ayant commencé sa pratique en tant que bénévole dévouée, elle offrait notamment son soutien aux femmes dans tout le Pacifique.
Mereani s’est éteinte en 2019.

Umyra Ahmad

Biography

Umyra Ahmad es una feminista de Malasia con antecedentes en incidencia política internacional y regional y educación en derechos humanos. En AWID, trabaja en la incidencia de los derechos asociados con el género y la sexualidad en las Naciones Unidas. Antes de incorporarse, se desempeñaba como oficial de programa en International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia y el Pacífico (IWRAW, Observatorio Internacional de los Derechos de las Mujeres), donde colaboró con organizaciones regionales, nacionales y de base en el uso de mecanismos de los órganos de tratados de las Naciones Unidas como herramientas para la rendición de cuentas de los Estados y el acceso a la justicia. En Malasia, trabaja con colectivos queer y de personas refugiadas y brinda apoyo en las tareas de coordinación de diferentes iniciativas de ayuda mutua.

Juli Dugdale was an Australian feminist who practiced intergenerational leadership rooted in principles of feminism, inclusion and equality. She was a leader, peer and mentor for many women and especially young women around the world. 

Juli was a dedicated staff member, volunteer and fervent advocate for young women’s leadership with the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) movement for over 30 years.

She offered a strong link between the Australian movement and the World YWCA Office. Her trust in the leadership capacity of young women led to a multi-year partnership with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the creation of the Rise Up manual, a global guide for young women’s transformative leadership, launched in 2018.

Juli passed away in Geneva on 12 August 2019.

Elina Margarita Castillo Jiménez

Biography

Elina est une jeune avocate des droits humains afro-dominicaine et féministe intersectionnelle, engagée à utiliser sa voix et ses compétences pour construire un monde plus juste, empathique et inclusif.  Elle a commencé la faculté de droit à 16 ans, convaincue que cela lui donnerait les outils nécessaires pour comprendre et promouvoir la justice sociale. Après un JD (doctorat en droit) en République dominicaine, elle a poursuivi un LL.M. (maîtrise en droit) en droit international public et droits humains au Royaume-Uni en tant que boursière Chevening. Seule femme latino-caribéenne de sa classe, elle a obtenu son diplôme avec distinction.

Elina a travaillé à l'intersection des droits humains, du genre, de la migration et de la politique et ceci à plusieurs niveaux : des instances étatiques aux collectifs de base aux organisations internationales. Elle a aidé à plaider des cas de violence sexiste devant la Cour interaméricaine des droits de l'homme. En tant que membre du Groupe consultatif des jeunes du FNUAP, elle a contribué au renforcement des droits sexuels et reproductifs en République dominicaine. Elle a codirigé la première campagne d'Amnesty International sur les droits des travailleur.euse.s du sexe dans les Amériques, développant des partenariats solides avec des organisations dirigées par des travailleur.euse.s du sexe et utilisant la position d'Amnesty pour amplifier la voix des femmes défenseurs des droits humains et des travailleur.euse.s du sexe. Elina fait partie de Foro Feminista Magaly Pineda et de la Global Shapers Community. Elle parle espagnol, français et anglais.

Grâce à la richesse de son expérience, Elina apporte à l’AWID de solides compétences de gouvernance et de planification stratégique et un savoir-faire éprouvé en matière de mécanismes des Nations Unies et des droits humains régionaux. Elle affirme également très clairement sa détermination à continuer de faire de l’AWID une organisation inclusive pour toutes les femmes, et particulièrement les jeunes féministes et celles des Caraïbes. C’est avec la diversité de ces apports qu’Elina rejoint une sororité de féministes internationales qui ont du mordant. Elle pourra continuer à y développer son leadership féministe, pour ne plus jamais se sentir seule dans cette voie.

Asesinato

Maritza Quiroz Leiva fue una activista social afrocolombiana, líder comunitaria y defensora de los derechos humanos de las mujeres. Como una de las 7,7 millones de colombianxs desplazadxs internamente por 50 años de conflicto armado, Maritza dedicó su trabajo de incidencia a apoyar los derechos de otras personas, en particular dentro de la comunidad afrocolombiana, que sufrían similares desplazamientos y violaciones de derechos.

Maritza era líder adjunta del Comité de Víctimas de Santa Marta, y una voz importante para quienes buscaban justicia en su comunidad, exigiendo reparaciones por las torturas, los secuestros, los desplazamientos y la violencia sexual que experimentaban las víctimas durante el conflicto armado. También trabajó activamente en el movimiento nacional por la redistribución de la tierra y la justicia agraria.

El 5 de enero de 2019 Maritza fue asesinada por dos individuos armados que irrumpieron en su casa. Tenía 60 años.

Maritza se sumó así a lxs otrxs cinco activistas y líderes sociales colombianxs que fueron asesinadxs durante la primera semana de 2019. En Colombia, ese año fueron asesinadxs un total de 107 defensorxs de derechos humanos.
