Across the Majority World, movements are organizing networks of mutual aid and demanding an end to attacks on their fundamental freedoms. 

Solidarity is a practice, and the people of Venezuela, Afghanistan and Sudan are calling on us, in the international community, for collective, material support and resistance. Human rights defenders and advocates for bodily autonomy are also inviting feminist activists and organizations to co-sign and amplify key demands for justice and accountability. 

With little urgency from world leaders to improve the lives of the billions they’re paid to serve, the people are setting their own tables. We The 99% People’s Summit was evidence of a global movement to drive urgent and practical economic transformation.

This past November, COP30 took place in Belém, Brazil and some AWIDers were present to witness firsthand the commitment of several movements to defend their land, their resources and their people. However, the space has long been co-opted by self-serving actors as well.

AWID has received a USD 20 million gift from MacKenzie Scott - with genuine gratitude. We accept this gift with a sense of relief, political complexity, and great responsibility.

The AWID board has taken the difficult decision to cancel the 14th AWID International Forum which had been scheduled to take place from September 20-23, 2021,  in the City of Taipei.

This is the first time that AWID has had to cancel a Forum since the first convening was held in 1983. As always, the wellbeing and safety of Forum participants remains our highest priority.

Every year, AWID seeks to renew and enrich the perspectives and experience reflected in our Board of Directors by bringing in new members. 

What is the Board’s role?

Our Board of Directors is critical to ensuring AWID effectively fulfills its mission to support feminist movements around the world to thrive. Our Board reflects a range of geographies, struggles and perspectives--part of the diversity and strength of feminist movements.

Currently, we are looking for individuals to serve 3-year terms on AWID’s Board, starting in early 2022. This is an opportunity to contribute to our organisation’s governance and to be part of an amazing group of feminists from around the world. 

Please help us to identify thoughtful and bold feminists to nominate for election by July 2, 2021.
