AWID Forum: Co-creating Feminist Futures

In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.

This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!

What has happened since 2016?

One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.

With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:

And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.

What happens now?

The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.

The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Binta Sarr was an activist for social, economic, cultural and political justice, and a hydraulic engineer in Senegal. After 13 years in civil service, she left this path to work with rural and marginalized women. 

Out of this engagement grew the Association for the Advancement of Senegalese Women (APROFES), a grassroots movement and organization Binta founded in 1987. One of her main approaches was leadership training, relating not only to economic activities but also to women's rights and access to positions of decision-making. 

“Grassroots populations must organize, mobilize, assume citizen control and demand democratic governance in all sectors of public space. The priority of social movements must go beyond the fight against poverty and must be focused on articulated and coherent development programs in line with human rights principles, while taking into account their needs and concerns both at the national and sub-regional levels and from a perspective of African and global integration.” - Binta Sarr

Rooted in Binta’s conviction that fundamental change in women’s status requires transformation in male attitudes, APROFES took an interdisciplinary approach, using radio, seminars and popular theatre, as well as providing innovative public education and cultural support for awareness-raising actions. Its popular theatre troupe performed original pieces on the caste system in Senegal, alcoholism, and conjugal violence. Binta and her team also looked at the crucial connection between the community and the broader world.

“For APROFES, it is a question of studying and taking into account the interactions between the micro and the macro, the local and the global and also, the different facets of development. From slavery to colonization, neocolonialism and the commodification of human development, most of the resources of Africa and the Third World (oil, gold, minerals and other natural resources) are still under the control of financial cartels and other multinationals that dominate this globalized world.” - Binta Sarr

Binta was one of the founding members of the female section of the Cultural and Sports Association Magg Daan. She received commendations from the Regional Governor and the Minister of Hydrology for her "devotion to rural people."

Born in 1954 in Guiguineo, a small rural town, Binta passed away in September 2019.

Biography

Caroline ha estado de forma periódica en AWID; en fechas anteriores, organizó los foros de 2005 y 2008 en Bangkok y Ciudad del Cabo, y cumplió otras funciones institucionales. Antes de incorporarse a AWID, impartió clases de inglés de pregrado, luego abandonó el ámbito académico para dirigir el Festival Internacional de Cine Asiático de Toronto y trabajar en otros proyectos. En fechas más recientes, se ha desempeñado como Responsable de Operaciones en Spring Strategies. Fuera del plano laboral, Caroline generalmente puede ser hallada a su jardín, en comunión con sus queridas plantas e intentando hacer las paces con los insectos y los roedores que suelen aparecer.

Love letter to feminist movements: A Letter from Inna and Faye

Dear feminist movements, 

Love is what keeps our feminist fire burning. Along with care for our communities, anger and rage in the face of injustice, and the courage to take action. 

In September 2022, we stepped with great excitement into our leadership roles at AWID, as Co-Executive Directors. We felt the warmth and embrace of the feminist sisterhood as you welcomed us. 

Reflecting on our most precious memories as feminists, we recall powerful moments of togetherness at street protests, sharp analysis, and brave voices shaking the status quo at gatherings. We held those intimate conversations into the night, laughed for hours, and danced at parties together.

Feminist fires need to be fed, especially in difficult times when there is no lack of external challenges, from the climate crisis and the rise of right-wing forces to exploitative economies and persisting patterns of oppression within our own social movements. It's these fires, burning ablaze everywhere, that light our ways and keep us warm, but we can’t disregard the exhausting effects of political violence and repression directed against many of our struggles, movements, and communities. 

We understand the desire to change the world as an essential ingredient of feminist organizing. We can never forget that we are the ones we have been waiting for, in building alternatives and shaping our future. Yet, vibrant feminist energy cannot be taken for granted and must be safeguarded in many ways. In this, we will continue to be vigilant. Greater and equal access to care and wellbeing, to healing and pleasure, are not only instruments to prevent burnout and sustain our movements, though that is an important function; first and foremost, they are the way in which we hope to live our lives.

We are thrilled to roll up our sleeves and work with you. AWID’s new strategic plan “Fierce Feminisms: Together We Rise” reflects our conviction that now is the time for us to be fierce and unapologetic in our agendas while making an effort to connect across movements and truly get to know each other’s realities, so that we may rise together - because, for us, this is the only way.

Our plans include the long-awaited AWID Forum! We look forward to meeting you all in person and online in 2024. We are hearing from you the need to connect and recharge, to rest and heal, to be challenged and inspired, to share good food, and to laugh and dance together. Few things in this world are as powerful and transformative, as feminists from all parts of the world coming together, and we truly hold our breath for this moment, because we know the magic that we can create together. 

Our membership engagement has taken on a life of its own through the AWID Community (our online platform for members), and our focus on building connection and solidarity resonates with many of you. Please join and connect with us and others in feminist movements around the world. We know the importance of connection in a time and space where the rules are not made for us, and we hold close our community, where each of us matters.

Together with our fantastic AWID colleagues, we promise to do our best to support feminist movements, as is the mission and purpose of AWID. Please hold us to account.

For the past 40 years, you - feminist movements - have shaped AWID’s history, and pushed us to be braver, creative, and radical. 40 is a fabulous age, and we look forward to another 40 years with you all. We are looking forward to the partnerships, calls to justice, collaboration, policy influencing, and badass feminist power that you all bring in navigating the ever-increasing backlash on gender, racial and environmental justice. We have so much to learn from you and from each other, as we collectively build the worlds we believe in.

Cindy Clark and Hakima Abbas, thank you for paving the way for us and preparing us to fill your enormous shoes. We always appreciate all those on whose shoulders we stood and continue to stand. We understand ourselves to be part of a broader movement landscape, feminist histories, presents, and daring futures. 

AWID’s Board of Directors, we are grateful to you for the support and feminist love you show us, and for your commitment to Global South leadership and the co-leadership model. We send our love and respect to each and every AWID colleague, we feel honoured to be working with such an exceptional feminist team of dedicated professionals.

This is our first time writing a love letter together, how could we conclude it without expressing love, care, and respect for each other? It’s a pretty intense relationship we’ve stepped into! We both bring our different and diverse perspectives and skills to our work, and as individuals, we also bring our lived experiences and authentic selves. 

Together with you all, we are a story in the making, a part of a beautiful woven - and often beautifully challenging - tapestry that continues into the future. We had fun starting this journey together with each other and with you, and we very much hope to keep the romance alive.

Laurie Carlos fue una actriz, directora, bailarina, dramaturga y poeta estadounidense, una artista y visionaria extraordinaria que tenía un poderoso don para hacer surgir el arte en otras personas.

«Laurie entraba en una habitación (cualquier habitación/todas las habitaciones ) con  clarividencia arremolinada, con genio artístico, rigor corporizado, con un realismo feroz— y con la determinación de ser libre... y de liberar a otrxs. Una hacedora de magia. Una vidente. Alguien que cambiaba de formas. Laurie me dijo una vez que entraba en los cuerpos de las personas para descubrir qué necesitaban.» - Sharon Bridgforth

Combinaba estilos de actuación tales como gestos rítmicos y texto. Laurie era mentora de nuevxs actorxs, performers y escritorxs, y ayudaba a difundir su trabajo a través de «Naked Stages», una beca para artistas emergentes. Integraba el Penumbra Theater, con el que colaboraba mediante guiones que produjeran identificaciones, a fin de «traer más voces femeninas al teatro». Laurie integraba también Urban Bush Women, una compañía de danza contemporánea prestigiosa que relata historias sobre mujeres de la diáspora africana.

En 1976, como Lady in Blue, hizo su debut en Broadway, en la producción original galardonada del drama poético de Ntozake Shange For colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf. La obra de Laurie incluye White Chocolate, The Cooking Show y Organdy Falsetto.

Laurie nació y creció en la ciudad de Nueva York, trabajó y vivió en Twin Cities. Falleció el 29 de diciembre de 2016 a la edad de 67 años, luego de una batalla contra el cáncer de colon.

Alexandra Lamb Guevara

Biography

Alexandra est une féministe anglo-colombienne qui dispose de plus de 20 ans d'expérience dans les programmes locaux, nationaux et internationaux en matière de VIH et de santé et droits sexuels et reproductifs. Elle possède une vaste expérience dans la mobilisation de ressources et les relations donateur·rice·s avec des fondations philanthropiques privées et des agences multilatérales pour le compte d'ONG internationales, nationales et locales, principalement situées en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes. Avant de rejoindre l'AWID, Alexandra a travaillé à la Fundación Si Mujer, une prestataire féministe d’accès à l’avortement et éducatrice en Colombie, à RedTraSex et à l'Alliance internationale contre le VIH/SIDA.

Alexandra est titulaire d'une licence en relations internationales et en études de développement de l'Université du Sussex et d'un master en santé publique de la London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dans les rares moments qui ne sont pas dédiés à son travail ou sa parentalité, elle adore nager, manger et a récemment commencé à jouer à Zelda: Breath of the Wild avec son fils.

Carta de amor a los movimientos feministas #10

Nunca supe que tenía una familia cercana que me ama y que quiere que crezca. Mi mamá siempre ha estado presente para mí, pero nunca imaginé que tendría miles de familias por otros sitios, con las que no estoy relacionada por lazos de sangre.

Descubrí que la familia no son solo las personas relacionadas por lazos sanguíneos, sino la gente que te ama de forma incondicional, a quienes no les importa tu orientación sexual, ni tu estado de salud, ni tu estatus social, ni tu raza.

Al pensar en los momentos invaluables en que escuché a mis hermanas de todo el mundo que son firmes feministas –gente a quien no he conocido físicamente, pero quienes me apoyan, me enseñan, luchan por mí– me faltan las palabras: las palabras no pueden expresar cuánto las amo a ustedes, mis mentoras, y a las demás feministas. Ustedes son una madre, una hermana, una amiga para millones de chicas jóvenes.

Ustedes son maravillosas, ustedes luchan por personas a quienes no conocen –y eso es lo que las hace tan especiales–.

Mi corazón se alegra de expresar esto por escrito.

Las amo a todas y seguiré amándolas. Nunca he visto a ninguna de ustedes en forma física, pero parece que nos conociéramos desde hace décadas.

Somos feministas y estamos orgullosas de ser mujeres.

Vamos a seguir diciéndole al mundo que nuestra valentía es nuestra corona.

Una carta de amor de FAITH ONUH, una joven feminista de Nigeria

Fadila M. était une activiste “tribale” Soulaliyate d’Azrou, dans la province marocaine d’Ifrane. Elle s'est battue contre une forme spécifique de discrimination à l'égard des femmes “tribales” liée à la propriété foncière.

Dans le cadre du Mouvement en faveur des droits fonciers des femmes Soulaliyates, elle a travaillé pour la révision de la législation-cadre relative à la gestion des biens communautaires, avec l'adoption en 2019 de trois projets de lois garantissant l'égalité des femmes et des hommes. 

Selon le droit coutumier en vigueur, les femmes n'avaient pas le droit de bénéficier de la terre, surtout celles qui étaient célibataires, veuves ou divorcées. Au Maroc, les droits à la terre collective se transmettaient traditionnellement entre les membres masculins de plus de 16 ans issus d’une même famille. Depuis 2007, Fadila M. faisait partie du mouvement des femmes, à savoir la première mobilisation populaire nationale de revendication de leurs droits fonciers. Parmi leurs victoires, citons le fait qu'en 2012, les femmes Soulaliyates ont pu, pour la première fois, s'inscrire sur les listes de bénéficiaires et disposer d'une indemnisation liée à la cession des terres. Le mouvement a également réussi à faire modifier le dahir de 1919 (décret du roi du Maroc) de façon à garantir aux femmes le droit à l'égalité.

Fadila M. s’est éteinte le 27 septembre 2018. Les circonstances de sa mort, survenue alors qu’elle participait à une marche de protestation sur la question des terres collectives, ne sont pas claires. Si les autorités déclarent que sa mort est accidentelle et qu'elle a fait un arrêt cardiaque sur le chemin de l'hôpital, la section locale de l'Association marocaine des droits de l'homme (AMDH), affirme quant à elle que Fadila a été étouffée par un membre des forces policières arborant un drapeau marocain. Sa famille a demandé qu’une enquête soit menée mais les résultats de l'autopsie n'ont pas été communiqués.

Jemutai Mercy

Biography

Jemutai se passionne pour les plantes et puise son inspiration dans la nature et dans toutes les interconnexions qui la composent. Cette fascination pour l’interdépendance des éléments se reflète dans son approche du travail, de la construction communautaire, des soins et du soutien. Iel croit en la présence vibrante de ses ancêtres au fond d’iel et vit pour expérimenter, se souvenir, défendre, apprécier et célébrer leurs luttes, leurs triomphes et leurs valeurs.

En tant que féministe queer intersectionnel·le et défenseur·euse des droits humains, Jemutai a consacré sa carrière à l’équité et à l’inclusion. Passionné·e par le développement organisationnel, iel dispose d’une formation en administration et en octroi de subventions. Iel œuvre désormais à la création de rassemblements pertinents, en fournissant un soutien et un leadership opérationnels et en veillant à ce que les espaces soient inclusifs, sûrs et élaborés avec soin et précision.

Jemutai croit profondément en la philosophie de l’Ubuntu, l’idée que « je suis parce que nous sommes ». Cette croyance en notre humanité partagée et en notre interdépendance mutuelle inspire son approche, basée sur la collaboration, ainsi que son engagement à créer un environnement favorable et inclusif pour tous·tes, en particulier pour les personnes structurellement réduites au silence et marginalisées.
