Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Nos hemos hecho la misma pregunta y creemos que no hay respuestas simples. Para muchas personas, el Foro de AWID puede ser uno de los pocos viajes internacionales que realicen en su vida. Ghiwa Sayegh est une écrivaine anarcho-queer, éditrice indépendante et archiviste. Elle est la rédactrice fondatrice de Kohl : la Revue de Recherche sur les Corps et le Genre et la cofondatrice d’Intersectional Knowledge Publishers. Elle a une maîtrise en études de genre de l’Université Paris 8 Vincennes – Saint-Denis. Elle est passionnée par la théorie queer, les circulations transnationales et les histoires imaginaires ou inconnues. Ses influences sont Audre Lorde et Sara Ahmed.

- La Conférence de Doha visait à dresser le bilan de la mise en œuvre du Consensus de Monterrey. Les six domaines du financement du développement y ont été examinés mais les progrès tangibles constatés ont été peu nombreux.
- Si la Conférence de Doha a permis d’aller au-delà de Monterrey du point de vue de l’égalité des genres, ses résultats restent insuffisants dans ce domaine. Dans une déclaration , le WWG on FfD (Groupe de travail des femmes sur le FdD) a souligné le fait que les engagements en faveur de l’égalité des genres figurant dans la Déclaration de Doha ne prendraient sens que si les questions systémiques qui sous-tendent la pauvreté et l’inégale répartition du pouvoir et des ressources dans l’économie politique mondiale étaient fermement traitées.
- À Doha, un forum de la société civile s’est tenu en parallèle à la conférence principale. Rassemblée au sein du Groupe des ONG de Doha pour le financement du développement (Doha NGO Group on Financing for Development), la société civile a exigé des changements économiques structurels ainsi que des politiques qui placent les droits des peuples au premier rang de leur liste de priorités et qui respectent et promeuvent les droit humains.

Thanks to our global feminist community! From May to August 2024, nearly 1,200 organizations working for Women's rights, gender justice, and LBTQI+ equality shared their experiences in the WITM survey. The results offer a unique picture of how feminist movements are resourced and where gaps remain.

The 1st drafting session on the outcome document for the 3rd Financing for Development Conference
- In January 2015 a series of drafting sessions towards the final outcome document started at UN headquarters in New York.
- Prior to the first drafting session the co-facilitators of the Addis conference preparatory process presented an elements paper for the so-called “zero-draft” outcome document, as the basis for the intergovernmental negotiations of the outcome document.
- During the sessions, women’s rights organisations emphasised the need to treat the FfD and means of implementations (MOI) under the post 2015 processes separately, because FfD provides a unique opportunity for states to address the structural causes of inequality.

Formatos de actividad sugeridos
Panel: en las discusiones de panel, explora un tema o un desafío desde diferentes perspectivas, o comparte un aprendizaje o una experiencia, con preguntas del público a continuación, si el tiempo lo permite.
Programa de entrevistas: puedes tener una conversación más espontánea al estilo de un programa de entrevistas. Estos programas de entrevistas pueden ser una conversación entre varias personas, facilitadas por la persona que presenta el programa. Las preguntas del público pueden determinar la dirección de la conversación.

Círculo para compartir [«birds of a feather»]: ideal para grupos pequeños, en un ambiente más íntimo, para oírse unxs a otrxs, iniciar una conversación y tratar con cuidado temas que pueden ser específicos, sensibles y complejos.
Artes – Taller participativo: actividades participativas de arte y expresión creativa. Ya sea a través de artes visuales, teatro, cine, pintura mural, danza, música, creación de artesanías y obras de arte colectivas, etc., apreciamos todas las ideas que celebren el arte y la creatividad feministas como formas de cambio social, sanación, expresión y transformación.
Artes – Performances, instalaciones y exhibiciones: son bienvenidas todas las propuestas que ofrezcan a lxs participantes del Foro nuevas experiencias y perspectivas, que expandan nuestros horizontes y que nos desafíen e inspiren para pensar, sentir y organizarnos de manera innovadora.
Sanación: actividades diversas diseñadas tanto para grupos como para personas individuales: desde aprender técnicas de relajación hasta hablar sobre la prevención del desgaste, desde prácticas informadas por el trauma para el cuidado de nuestro cuerpo, nuestra mente y nuestra alma hasta la reparación de fisuras dentro de nuestros movimientos.

- Del 15 al 19 de junio, en la sede de la ONU tuvo lugar la ya planificada Tercera Sesión Redactora del Documento Final de la Conferencia.
