AWID Forum: Co-creating Feminist Futures
In September 2016, the 13th AWID international Forum brought together in Brazil over 1800 feminists and women’s rights advocates in a spirit of resistance and resilience.
This section highlights the gains, learnings and resources that came out of our rich conversations. We invite you to explore, share and comment!
What has happened since 2016?
One of the key takeaways from the 2016 Forum was the need to broaden and deepen our cross-movement work to address rising fascisms, fundamentalisms, corporate greed and climate change.
With this in mind, we have been working with multiple allies to grow these seeds of resistance:
- Our Seed Initiatives, has helped 20 ideas that emerged at the Forum to grow into concrete actions
- The video “Defending people and planet” and guide “Weaving resistance through action” put courageous WHRDs in the spotlight and present concrete strategies they use to confront corporate power.
- With our animations about the State of Our Feminist Movements and Climate and Environmental Justice, movements now have creative tools to support their advocacy work.
- The compiling artistic expressions of our #MovementsMatter series continues to inspire stronger and more creative organizing around the world.
- Movements can also benefit from new methodologies on Visioning Feminist Futures (Coming up soon!)
And through our next strategic plan and Forum process, we are committed to keep developing ideas and deepen the learnings ignited at the 2016 Forum.
What happens now?
The world is a much different place than it was a year ago, and it will continue to change.
The next AWID Forum will take place in the Asia Pacific region (exact location and dates to be announced in 2018).

About the AWID Forum
AWID Forums started in 1983, in Washington DC. Since then, the event has grown to become many things to many peoples: an iterative process of sharpening our analyses, vision and actions; a watershed moment that reinvigorates participants’ feminisms and energizes their organizing; and a political home for women human rights defenders to find sanctuary and solidarity.

Biography
Khaoula Ksiksi es una apasionada defensora de la justicia, la equidad y la liberación. Como asesora de género, igualdad, diversidad e inclusión, trabaja en diferentes programas humanitarios y contextos de crisis para que la inclusión sea una realidad, no una mera política. Colabora con diferentes equipos para luchar contra la opresión estructural mediante herramientas audaces y transformadoras basadas en experiencias reales.
Su activismo comenzó al frente del movimiento antirracista de Túnez. Con Mnemty, contribuyó a impulsar la primera ley antidiscriminación del país, lo que forzó un examen de conciencia nacional sobre la injusticia racial. Más tarde fue cofundadora de Voices of Black Tunisian Women (Voces de las Mujeres Negras de Túnez), que tiene por objetivo ampliar el liderazgo de las mujeres negras, construir redes de solidaridad y exigir su visibilidad en una sociedad que a menudo las silencia.
Khaoula es también miembro fundadora de Falgatna, un movimiento queer-feminista radical que lucha por los derechos relativos a la orientación sexual, la identidad y la expresión de género y las características sexuales (SOGIESC, por sus siglas en inglés) y apoya a las comunidades LGBTQI+ mediante acciones directas, la resistencia digital y una militancia enfocada en las personas sobrevivientes.
Anteriormente, lideró proyectos feministas y de justicia climática regionales de la Fundación Rosa Luxemburgo en África del Norte y África occidental.
El corazón de su trabajo abriga una convicción bien arraigada: nadie es libre hasta que todes seamos libres. Su activismo es tanto una lucha como una carta de amor a su gente, a sus comunidades y al mundo que merecemos.

La Asociación para los Derechos de las Mujeres y el Desarrollo (AWID) es una organización internacional feminista de membresía.
Trabajamos para alcanzar la justicia de género y los derechos humanos de las mujeres mediante el fortalecimiento de la voz colectiva, el impacto y la influencia de las/os activistas, organizaciones y movimientos por los derechos de las mujeres de todo el mundo.

Are you a Northern or a Southern organization?
AWID is a global organization.
The main focus of our work is global. We also work closely with members and other women’s rights organizations and allies at the local, national and regional levels so that their realities inform our work.
- We have offices in Mexico and Canada
- Our staff are located in 15 countries around the world
- Ten of our 13 Board members are from the global South.

Is that a resounding yes that we hear? YES!
Then check out Crear | Résister | Transform: a festival for feminist movements. This festival took place virtually throughout the month of September 2021 across all of AWID’s platforms, and now you can experience it on your own time.
The Festival was a multicultural and multilingual experience.
The panelists participated in their preferred language and at AWID we included subtitles on the videos for your accessibility.

¿Qué es el Foro Internacional de AWID?
El Foro Internacional de AWID es una reunión de 2.000 líderes de derechos de las mujeres y activistas de todo el mundo. El Foro AWID es el evento recurrente más grande de su tipo, y cada Foro tiene lugar en un país diferente en el Sur global.
El Foro Internacional de AWID es un evento de la comunidad global y, al mismo tiempo, un espacio para una transformación personal radical. Es un encuentro único: el Foro reúne a los movimientos feministas, por los derechos de las mujeres, por la justicia de género, LBTQI+ y aliados, en toda nuestra diversidad y humanidad, para conectarnos, sanar y florecer.
