Young Feminist Activism
Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat
Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.
At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.
A multigenerational approach
AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.
Our Actions
We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

La Conférence des Nations Unies de 2009 sur la crise financière et économique mondiale et son incidence sur le développement
- La conférence de 2009 était l’aboutissement de celle de Doha en 2008. La Déclaration de Doha avait mandaté les Nations Unies pour organiser, sous l’égide du Président de l’Assemblée générale, une conférence consacrée à la crise financière et économique mondiale et à son incidence sur le développement.
- Pendant la conférence, les groupes de femmes, par le biais du WWG ont souligné l’impact de la crise financière mondiale sur les groupes les plus vulnérables. Dans sa déclaration aux membres (en anglais), le WWG a proposé une liste d’actions nécessaires que les États membres devraient mettre en œuvre pour pallier aux conséquences de la crise sur les femmes. Le groupe de travail a également déclaré que la prise en compte des autres groupes sociaux touchés par la crise était essentielle pour apporter une réponse qui soit en accord avec les normes et les engagements internationaux relatifs à l’égalité des genres, aux droits des femmes, aux droits humains et à l’autonomisation.

Suggested Activity Formats
Panel: In Panel discussions, explore an issue or challenge from different perspectives, or share a learning or experience, followed by audience questions if time allows.
Talk Show: Have a more spontaneous conversation in Talk-Show style. Talk Shows can be a conversation among several people, facilitated by a talk-show host. Audience questions can determine the conversation’s direction.
Discussion: These can take the form of world cafes, fishbowls, and other methodologies that facilitate participants’ active involvement in conversations. Highly participatory.
Workshop: Interactive sessions that invite participants to build new skills in any and all areas of life and activism.
Strategy Session: This is an invitation to think through an issue or strategy, in depth, with others. A space to learn from each other: what works, what doesn’t, and how do we develop new and collective strategies to create the worlds we dream of.
Sharing Circle (also known as “Birds of a Feather”): Ideal for small groups, in a more intimate setting, to hear from each other, spark discussion and carefully address topics that may be specific, sensitive and complex.
Arts – Participatory Workshop: Participatory activities involving arts and creative expression. Whether through visual art, theater, film, mural, dance, music, collective craft or artmaking, etc., we welcome all ideas celebrating feminist art and creativity as forms of social change, healing, expression and transformation.
Arts – Performances, Installations and Exhibitions: We welcome submissions that offer Forum participants new experiences and perspectives, expand our horizons, and challenge and inspire us to think, feel and organize in new ways.
Healing: Diverse activities tailored both for groups and individuals, from learning relaxation techniques to discussing burnout prevention, from trauma-informed practices of care for our body, mind and soul to healing rifts within our movements.

Samira Khalil
Samira was a Syrian activist under Bashar al-Asad's regime.
From a young age Samira opposed all forms of despotism, particularly vis-a-vis the authoritarian regime in which she lived.
Samira was kidnapped in 2013 along with three other prominent activists. She is believed to have been taken from the Center for the Documentation of Violations in Duma, in rural Damascus.
The main suspect associated with her disappearance is the Army of Islam (which denies its involvement). There has been no formal investigation of Samira’s disappearance and she has not been heard from since. Samira was committed to her country and refused to leave Syria until she felt her role in empowering women and documenting crimes was no longer necessary.

- The zero-draft outcome document (dated 16 March), prepared by the Co-facilitators, was released for discussion at the 2nd drafting session from 13-17 April 2015.
- During the opening session, the WWG on FfD called for dedicated resources for gender equality and women’s empowerment as stated in both the Monterrey Consensus and Doha Declaration,to be added into the Zero draft.

Dora Nkem Akunyili
Dora nació en el estado de Benue, Nigeria. Fue una farmacéutica, tecnócrata, investigadora erudita y líder comunitaria reconocida mundialmente.
El trabajo revolucionario de Dora produjo un cambio de paradigma en el servicio público nigeriano cuando se desempeñó como Directora General de la Agencia Nacional para la Administración y Control de Alimentos y Medicamentos, entre 2001 y 2008. Encabezó reformas en la aplicación de políticas y regulaciones que redujeron drásticamente la cantidad de drogas falsas que asolaban el sector farmacéutico nigeriano cuando asumió su cargo.
Se convirtió en un ícono del empoderamiento de las mujeres, porque fue un ejemplo real de mujer valiente y competente que desafió los males de una sociedad predominantemente patriarcal. Fue nombrada Ministra de Información y Comunicación entre 2008 y 2010.
Murió luego de una batalla contra el cáncer, y le sobreviven su esposo, seis hijxs y tres nietxs.
¿Qué es el Proceso de la Financiación para el Desarrollo de Naciones Unidas?
El proceso de la Financiación para el Desarrollo (FpD) de Naciones Unidas (ONU) se propone abordar distintas formas de financiación y cooperación para el desarrollo. Según lo acordado en el Consenso de Monterrey, se centra en seis áreas prioritarias:
- Movilización de recursos financieros nacionales para el desarrollo;
- Movilización de recursos internacionales para el desarrollo: la inversión extranjera directa y otras corrientes de capitales privados;
- El comercio internacional como promotor del desarrollo;
- Aumento de la cooperación financiera y técnica internacional para el desarrollo;
- La deuda externa;
- Tratamiento de cuestiones sistémicas: fomento de la coherencia y la cohesión de los sistemas monetarios, financieros y comerciales internacionales en apoyo al desarrollo.

Su’ad Al-Ali
Ardente défenseure des droits des femmes et des enfants, Su’ad dirigeait Al-Weed Al-Alaiami, une organisation irakienne de défense des droits humains.
Elle a participé aux manifestations de juillet 2018 qui ont eu lieu à Bassorah et dans plusieurs autres villes irakiennes pour protester contre le chômage, réclamer des emplois et des services publics appropriés pour les citoyen-ne-s, ainsi que pour exiger l'élimination de la corruption endémique. Le 25 septembre 2018, Su’ad a été assassinée dans le quartier d’Al-Abbasiyah, dans le centre-ville de Bassorah.
Une vidéo de l’incident a montré une personne qui s'est approchée d'elle alors qu'elle montait dans sa voiture, et lui a tiré une balle dans la tête avant de pointer son arme sur son chauffeur, Hussain Hassan, qui a été blessé à l'épaule. Su’ad Al-Ali avait 46 ans et était mère de quatre enfants.
