Human Rights Council (HRC)
The Human Rights Council (HRC) is the key intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. It holds three regular sessions a year: in March, June and September. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the secretariat for the HRC.
The HRC works by:

Debating and passing resolutions on global human rights issues and human rights situations in particular countries

Examining complaints from victims of human rights violations or activist organizations on behalf of victims of human rights violations

Appointing independent experts (known as “Special Procedures”) to review human rights violations in specific countries and examine and further global human rights issues
-
Engaging in discussions with experts and governments on human rights issues
-
Assessing the human rights records of all UN Member States every four and a half years through the Universal Periodic Review
AWID works with feminist, progressive and human rights partners to share key knowledge, convene civil society dialogues and events, and influence negotiations and outcomes of the session.
With our partners, our work will:
◾️ Monitor, track and analyze anti-rights actors, discourses and strategies and their impact on resolutions
◾️ Raise awareness of the findings of the 2017 and 2021 OURs Trends Reports.
◾️Support the work of feminist UN experts in the face of backlash and pressure
◾️Advocate for state accountability
◾️ Work with feminist movements and civil society organizations to advance rights related to gender and sexuality.

Love letter to Feminist Movements #1
Dear gorgeous beings,
I know you are so close. You can feel it can't you? How things need to shift and you need to centre yourself.
This is a letter to tell you to do it. Choose your healing. Choose to be OK. Better than OK. Choose to be whole, to be happy. To cry tears for yourself and no one else. Choose to shut out the world and tell them that 'you will be back in 5 mins'. Or five days. Or five years.
Or never.
Choose to not take it all on. Choose to take none of it on. Because none of it is yours. It was never yours. They told you since you were born that it was yours. Your family's problems. Your lovers' problems. Your neighbours' problems. The globe's problems. The constant whisper that these problems belong to you. They are yours. Yours to hold, yours to shoulder. Yours to fix.
That was a lie.
A bamboozle
A long con.
A scam.
The problems of the universe are not yours.
The only problems that are yours are your own. Everyone else can take a hike.
Allow yourself to drop everything and sprint off into the jungle. Befriend a daisy clad nymph, start a small library in the roots of a tree. Dance naked and howl at the moonlight. Converse with Oshun at the river bed.
Or simply drink a cup of tea when you need to take a moment to breathe.
Give yourself permission to disappear into the mist and reappear three countries over as a mysterious chocolatier with a sketchy past and penchant for dramatic cloaks and cigars.
Or stop answering work calls on weekends.
Let yourself swim to deserted island with a lover and dress only in the coconut shells from coconut rum that you make and sip at sunset.
Or say no when you don't have the capacity to create space for someone.
The options for holding yourself are endless.
Whatever you do, know the world will always keep spinning. That's the beauty and the pain of it. No matter who or what you choose over yourself and your soul the world will always keep spinning.
Therefore, choose you.
In the morning when that first light hits, choose you. When it’s lunchtime and it’s time to cry on company time, choose you. In the evening, when you are warming up leftovers because you didn’t have time to cook again, choose you. When anxiety wakes you up and existence is silent at 3:45 am.
Choose you.
Because the world will always keep twirling on a tilt and you deserve to have someone always trying to make it right side up for you.

Leah Tumbalang
Leah Tumbalang was a Lumad woman of Mindanao in the Philippines. The story of Lumad Indigenous peoples encompasses generations of resistance to large-scale corporate mining, protection of ancestral domains, resources, culture, and the fight for the right to self-determination.
Leah was a Lumad leader as well as a leader of Kaugalingong Sistema Igpasasindog to Lumadnong Ogpaan (Kasilo), a Lumad and peasant organization advocating against the arrival of mining corporations in Bukidnon, Mindanao province. She was unwavering in her anti-mining activism, fervently campaigning against the devastating effects of mineral extraction on the environment and Indigenous peoples’ lands. Leah was also an organizer of the Bayan Muna party-list, a member of the leftist political party Makabayan.
For almost a decade, Leah (along with other members of Kasilo) had been receiving threats for co-leading opposition against the deployment of paramilitary groups believed to be supported by mining interests.

Being at the forefront of resistance also often means being a target of violence and impunity and Leah not only received numerous death threats, but was murdered on 23 August 2019 in Valencia City, Bukidnon.
According to a Global Witness report, “the Philippines was the worst-affected country in sheer numbers” when it comes to murdered environmental activists in 2018.

Feministas sudanesas: «Una revolución dentro de la revolución»
«Mientras estaba en la primera línea de la protesta, fui sometida a violencia sexual, a lesiones físicas y a otras formas de violencia. Pero no me detendré hasta que logremos pleno gobierno civil en Sudán. Debemos impedir la militarización del Estado. Nuestros cuerpos no deben seguir siendo tratados como campos de batalla»
dijo Amal,1 una manifestante de 23 años.2
Durante los últimos cuatro años, las mujeres lideraron la revolución en Sudán. Su liderazgono fue solo callejero, sino que constituyó el poder que impulsó la resistencia constante en todos los niveles. Las mujeres y las jóvenes feministas se convirtieron en la conciencia alerta del movimiento de cambio y democratización sudanés. Desde la primera protesta del 13 de diciembre de 2018 contra el régimen anterior, en la ciudad de Aldmazein, en el área de conflicto del Nilo Azul, las jóvenes estudiantes fueron las voces que demandaron el fin de la dictadura de los militares y los Hermanos Musulmanes, que ya lleva treinta años en el poder.
El movimiento feminista, liderado por mujeres de entre 16 y 35 años, ha entablado una revolución dentro de la revolución en Sudán durante los últimos cuatro años de lucha ininterrumpida. Las potentes voces de las jóvenes que ocupan espacios en las calles, las redes sociales, la sociedad civil y las organizaciones políticas se elevaron lo suficiente como para reconfigurar la opinión pública y desafiar las normas sociales. Por primera vez en la historia de Sudán, las discusiones sobre violencia sexual y de género y sobre los tabúes de la violencia doméstica y los procesos de toma de decisiones dominados por los hombres se convirtieron en debates generalizados. Sarah Hegazy, una audaz activista egipcia por los derechos LGBTQI+, vivía en una sociedad en la que lxs integrantes de su comunidad, sus cuerpos y sus vidas, enfrentan prejuicios letales a menudo. La resistencia de Sarah estaba arraigada en la deconstrucción del sistema dominante, opresor y patriarcal, y de sus actores antiderechos.
«[En Egipto], toda persona que no sea varón, musulmán, suní, heterosexual y partidario del sistema, es rechazada, reprimida, estigmatizada, arrestada, exiliada o asesinada. Este problema se relaciona con el sistema patriarcal en su conjunto, ya que el Estado no podría ejercer su represión contra lxs ciudadanxs, si no hubiera una opresión preexistente desde la infancia», escribió Sarah Hegazy el 6 de marzo de 2020
La supresión de la voz de Sarah por parte del gobierno egipcio alcanzó su pico más violento en 2017, cuando fue arrestada por alzar una bandera arcoíris en el recital de Mashrou’ Leila (una banda libanesa cuyo cantante principal es abiertamente gay) en El Cairo. Fue acusada de pertenecer a un grupo ilegal, y de «promover la desviación sexual y el libertinaje».
«Fue un acto de apoyo y solidaridad, no solamente con el cantante [de Mashrou’ Leila] sino con todas las personas oprimidas... Nos enorgulleció alzar la bandera. Nunca nos imaginamos la reacción de la sociedad y del Estado egipcio. Para ellos, yo era una criminal: alguien que buscaba destruir la estructura moral de la sociedad.» - Sarah Hegazy
Sarah estuvo encarcelada por tres meses, durante los cuales fue torturada y agredida sexualmente. En enero de 2018, después de ser liberada bajo fianza, pidió asilo en Canadá, donde estaba segura, pero seguía prisionera de los recuerdos del abuso y la violencia que su cuerpo y su alma habían sufrido.
«Salí de esta experiencia después de tres meses con un caso muy intenso y serio de TEPT [trastorno por estrés postraumático]. La prisión me mató. Me destruyó», dijo Sarah Hegazy a NPR.
Sarah se quitó la vida el 14 de junio de 2020, luego de dejar una nota escrita a mano en árabe:
«A mis hermanxs: traté de encontrar redención y fallé, perdónenme.
A mis amigxs: la experiencia [el viaje] fue muy dura y soy demasiado débil como para resistir, perdónenme.
Al mundo: has sido tremendamente cruel, pero perdono.»
Su legado y su coraje continuarán, llevados adelante por quienes la aman y creen en aquello por lo que Sarah luchó.

Ce rapport révèle la réalité du financement des organisations féministes et de défense des droits des femmes dans un contexte de bouleversements politiques et financiers. S’appuyant sur plus de dix ans d’analyse depuis la dernière étude Où est l’argent ? de l’AWID (Arroser les feuilles, affamer les racines), il dresse un bilan des progrès réalisés, des lacunes persistantes et des menaces croissantes dans le domaine du financement féministe.
Le rapport salue le pouvoir des initiatives menées par les mouvements pour façonner le financement selon leurs propres conditions, tout en alertant sur les coupes massives dans l’aide au développement, le recul de la philanthropie et l’escalade des offensives anti-droits.
Il appelle les bailleurs de fonds à investir massivement dans l’organisation féministe, infrastructure essentielle pour la justice et la libération, et invite les mouvements à réimaginer des modèles de financement audacieux et autodéterminés, fondés sur le soin, la solidarité et le pouvoir collectif.

Crear | Résister | Transform: un recorrido por el Festival
Mientras el capitalismo heteropatriarcal continúa forzándonos al consumismo y el acatamiento, observamos que nuestras luchas están siendo compartimentadas y separadas por fronteras tanto físicas como virtuales.
Y con los desafíos adicionales presentados por una pandemia global que todavía deben ser superados, esta estrategia de «divide y vencerás» ha sido favorable para la proliferación de la explotación en muchas áreas.
No obstante esto, desde el 1° hasta el 30 de septiembre de 2021, un festival para movimientos feministas! de AWID nos llevó a un viaje sobre lo que significa encarnar nuestras realidades en espacios virtuales. En el Festival se reunieron activistas feministas de todo el mundo, no solo para compartir experiencias de libertades duramente conquistadas, de resistencias y de solidaridades más allá de las fronteras, sino para articular lo que podría ser una forma transnacional de compañerismo.
Esta solidaridad tiene el potencial de desafiar las fronteras, tejiendo una visión del futuro que es transformadora, porque es abolicionista [del complejo industrial carcelario] y anticapitalista. A lo largo de un mes, a través de las infraestructuras digitales que ocupamos con nuestra cuiridad / queeridad, nuestra resistencia y nuestros imaginarios, el Festival nos mostró una forma de desviarnos de los sistemas que nos hacen cómplices de la opresión de otras personas y de nosotrxs mismxs.
Si bien Audre Lorde nos enseñó que las herramientas del amo nunca desarmarán la casa del amo, Sara Ahmed nos demostró que podemos utilizarlas en forma indebida. Dado que teníamos que dar espacio a la asamblea, y a pesar de todas las otras demandas sobre nuestro tiempo, fue posible imaginar una disrupción de la realidad del capitalismo heteropatriarcal.
Ahora bien, si entendemos la asamblea como una forma de placer, entonces, se hace posible establecer el vínculo entre el placer transgresor y la resistencia transnacional/transdigital: entre las clases de placer que desafían las fronteras por un lado, y la cuiridad / queeridad, lo camp, las luchas por la tierra y los movimientos indigenistas, el anticapitalismo y la organización política anticolonial por el otro.
Esta edición intentó captar un sentido de cómo el ejercicio de la asamblea en el Festival adoptó múltiples formas e imaginaciones. Además de contar con las colaboraciones directas de algunxs de sus conferencistas y soñadorxs, trajimos a una plétora de otras voces del Sur global para que conversaran sobre muchos de sus temas y sujetxs. Lo que sigue es una muestra de algunos de los paneles del Festival que más nos inspiraron.
