Young Feminist Activism

Organizing creatively, facing an increasing threat

Young feminist activists play a critical role in women’s rights organizations and movements worldwide by bringing up new issues that feminists face today. Their strength, creativity and adaptability are vital to the sustainability of feminist organizing.

At the same time, they face specific impediments to their activism such as limited access to funding and support, lack of capacity-building opportunities, and a significant increase of attacks on young women human rights defenders. This creates a lack of visibility that makes more difficult their inclusion and effective participation within women’s rights movements.

A multigenerational approach

AWID’s young feminist activism program was created to make sure the voices of young women are heard and reflected in feminist discourse. We want to ensure that young feminists have better access to funding, capacity-building opportunities and international processes. In addition to supporting young feminists directly, we are also working with women’s rights activists of all ages on practical models and strategies for effective multigenerational organizing.

Our Actions

We want young feminist activists to play a role in decision-making affecting their rights by:

  • Fostering community and sharing information through the Young Feminist Wire. Recognizing the importance of online media for the work of young feminists, our team launched the Young Feminist Wire in May 2010 to share information, build capacity through online webinars and e-discussions, and encourage community building.

  • Researching and building knowledge on young feminist activism, to increase the visibility and impact of young feminist activism within and across women’s rights movements and other key actors such as donors.

  • Promoting more effective multigenerational organizing, exploring better ways to work together.

  • Supporting young feminists to engage in global development processes such as those within the United Nations

  • Collaboration across all of AWID’s priority areas, including the Forum, to ensure young feminists’ key contributions, perspectives, needs and activism are reflected in debates, policies and programs affecting them.

Laura Lee

Laura was a leading activist and lawyer who campaigned fearlessly for the decriminalisation of sex work in Ireland.

She is remembered as “a freedom fighter for sex workers, a feminist, a mother to a daughter and a needed friend to many.” 

Laura advocated for individuals in the sex industry to be recognised as workers deserving of rights. She advanced demands for decriminalisation, including initiating a judicial review at Belfast’s high court in respect of the provisions criminalising the purchase of sex.  Laura stated that her intention was to bring the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Christine Ruguaru

Biography

Christine est une féministe panafricaine du Kenya avec une formation en sociologie, économie et politiques publiques. Elle possède une vaste expérience de travail dans l’administration, les subventions, la gestion de programmes et la logistique visant à faire progresser les droits des femmes et des filles. Avant de rejoindre l'AWID, elle a travaillé chez Urgent Action Fund Africa (UAF-A), Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiHEA), NCBA Bank Kenya PLC et autres, dans des domaines programmatiques, administratifs et logistiques. Chez UAF-A, elle a été consultante en logistique pour le deuxième festival Feminist Republik et les éditions 1 et 2 des Rassemblements panafricains de philanthropies féministes. Elle a également organisé des événements parallèles au sein de la Commission de la condition de la femme (CSW) et du Forum Génération Égalité (FEM). Elle a aussi travaillé au sein de programmes sur la violence sexuelle et basée sur le genre (SGBV), la justice environnementale et climatique, l'autonomisation économique des femmes et les droits et la santé sexuels et reproductifs (DSSR) sur le continent africain. Ses passions et aspirations sont de voir une amélioration continue des droits des femmes et des filles dans tous les domaines. Et cela notamment pour les femmes et les filles de terrain et autochtones, à travers un renforcement des capacités et liens avec les parties prenantes pertinentes. Elle adore faire de la randonnée et explorer la nature, écouter de la musique et tenir un journal.

Al momento de su muerte, luego de una corta pero denodada batalla contra el cáncer, Deborah era la Jefa de Comunicaciones y Participación en la Women’s Funding Network (WFN, Red de financiamiento para mujeres).

Deborah también trabajó para el Fondo Global de Mujeres entre 2008 y 2017. Era sumamente querida y respetada por el consejo asesor, el personal y lxs colaboradorxs de la organización.

Kavita Ramdas, anterior directora ejecutiva del Fondo, acertadamente señaló que Deborah era un «pequeño paquete que explotaba de calidez, generosidad, inteligencia, estilo y un apasionado compromiso por unir la belleza con la justicia. Ella entendía el poder de las historias. El poder de la voz de las mujeres. El poder de la experiencia vivida. El poder de levantarse de las cenizas y decirle a otrxs que era posible. Y todavía nos levantamos».

Musimbi Kanyoro, actual directora ejecutiva del Fondo Global de Mujeres, añadió: «Hemos perdido a una hermana y su vida ilumina valores que nos unen y nos inspiran. Al reunirnos para llorar el fallecimiento de Deborah, recordemos y celebremos su notable, audaz y apasionada vida».

Biography

Jemutai se passionne pour les plantes et puise son inspiration dans la nature et dans toutes les interconnexions qui la composent. Cette fascination pour l’interdépendance des éléments se reflète dans son approche du travail, de la construction communautaire, des soins et du soutien.

Iel croit en la présence vibrante de ses ancêtres au fond d’iel et vit pour expérimenter, se souvenir, défendre, apprécier et célébrer leurs luttes, leurs triomphes et leurs valeurs. En tant que féministe queer intersectionnel·le et défenseur·euse des droits humains, Jemutai a consacré sa carrière à l’équité et à l’inclusion. Passionné·e par le développement organisationnel, iel dispose d’une formation en administration et en octroi de subventions. Iel œuvre désormais à la création de rassemblements pertinents, en fournissant un soutien et un leadership opérationnels et en veillant à ce que les espaces soient inclusifs, sûrs et élaborés avec soin et précision.

Jemutai croit profondément en la philosophie de l’Ubuntu, l’idée que « je suis parce que nous sommes ». Cette croyance en notre humanité partagée et en notre interdépendance mutuelle inspire son approche, basée sur la collaboration, ainsi que son engagement à créer un environnement favorable et inclusif pour tous·tes, en particulier pour les personnes structurellement réduites au silence et marginalisées.

Carmen dirigeait le Construction Resource and Development Collective et a joué un rôle de premier plan en faveur de la participation des femmes dans l’industrie de la construction en Jamaïque.

Elle a également œuvré à la préparation aux catastrophes de femmes rurales et urbaines. Elle a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec les femmes (en particulier les mères célibataires) pour leur apprendre à utiliser les sangles anti-ouragan ainsi que d’autres technologies pour sécuriser leur foyer. Elle a travaillé dans le domaine de l’eau et de l’assainissement et a été une ardente défenseure d’une gestion durable de l’environnement et du développement.

Elle faisait partie de la Commission Huairou et plaidait en faveur des femmes de la base sur des questions telles que le logement, l'énergie et les moyens de subsistance durables.

We collaborate for advocacy on specific issues, members vote in elections for our Board, and can also participate in and contribute to our Priority Areas through webinars, surveys, or urgent actions, for example.

Our institutional membership draws from a broad range of organizations interested in advancing gender justice and women’s human rights, including women’s rights organizations, from the local to the global levels, grassroots networks, major international institutions, government departments, university programs and more. 63% of our members are from the global South and 38% are under the age of 30.

Ven a conocer a Aura Roig, activista feminista visionaria, antropologa y directora-fundadora de la cooperativa Metzineres.

Dedicó las últimas dos décadas a la investigación, el diseño y la implementación de políticas con perspectivas de reducción de daños, derechos humanos y feminismo interseccional.

Después de experimentar y aprender de comunidades que usan drogas a través del mundo, volvió a Barcelona y creó la Xarxa de Dones que Usen Drogues (la Red de Mujeres que Usan Drogas, XADUD). XADUD era un espacio de apoyo mutuo y de solidaridad con la lucha por los derechos de los grupos marginalizados que, más tarde, se convirtió en la cooperativa Metzineres.

Actualmente, Aura está trabajando para expandir el modelo Metzineres y brindar apoyo a grupos más grandes, al mismo tiempo que documenta ampliamente su prolífico viaje y aprendizaje.

Ottilie was a Namibian feminist activist, educator and politician.

Ottilie was one of the founders of the South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO), the Yu Chi Chan Club (an armed revolutionary group); and the South West African National Liberation Front (SWANLIF). She was also a founder of the Namibian Women’s Association and Girl Child Project.

Throughout her life, Ottilie argued for the right to argue, think, contest, and demand. She mobilized women, organized students and teachers and criticized other comrades for their elitism and their corruption.

Ottilie worked ferociously to dismantle patriarchy, and to create a concrete transformative, liberatory, feminist participatory democracy.

Ottilie often said: “I will rest the day I die.”
