Women Human Rights Defenders

WHRDs are self-identified women and lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LBTQI) people and others who defend rights and are subject to gender-specific risks and threats due to their human rights work and/or as a direct consequence of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

WHRDs are subject to systematic violence and discrimination due to their identities and unyielding struggles for rights, equality and justice.

The WHRD Program collaborates with international and regional partners as well as the AWID membership to raise awareness about these risks and threats, advocate for feminist and holistic measures of protection and safety, and actively promote a culture of self-care and collective well being in our movements.

Risks and threats targeting WHRDs  

WHRDs are exposed to the same types of risks that all other defenders who defend human rights, communities, and the environment face. However, they are also exposed to gender-based violence and gender-specific risks because they challenge existing gender norms within their communities and societies.

By defending rights, WHRDs are at risk of:

  • Physical assault and death
  • Intimidation and harassment, including in online spaces
  • Judicial harassment and criminalization
  • Burnout

A collaborative, holistic approach to safety

We work collaboratively with international and regional networks and our membership

  • to raise awareness about human rights abuses and violations against WHRDs and the systemic violence and discrimination they experience
  • to strengthen protection mechanisms and ensure more effective and timely responses to WHRDs at risk

We work to promote a holistic approach to protection which includes:

  • emphasizing the importance of self-care and collective well being, and recognizing that what care and wellbeing mean may differ across cultures
  • documenting the violations targeting WHRDs using a feminist intersectional perspective;
  • promoting the social recognition and celebration of the work and resilience of WHRDs ; and
  • building civic spaces that are conducive to dismantling structural inequalities without restrictions or obstacles

Our Actions

We aim to contribute to a safer world for WHRDs, their families and communities. We believe that action for rights and justice should not put WHRDs at risk; it should be appreciated and celebrated.

  • Promoting collaboration and coordination among human rights and women’s rights organizations at the international level to  strengthen  responses concerning safety and wellbeing of WHRDs.

  • Supporting regional networks of WHRDs and their organizations, such as the Mesoamerican Initiative for WHRDs and the WHRD Middle East and North Africa  Coalition, in promoting and strengthening collective action for protection - emphasizing the establishment of solidarity and protection networks, the promotion of self-care, and advocacy and mobilization for the safety of WHRDs;

  • Increasing the visibility and recognition of  WHRDs and their struggles, as well as the risks that they encounter by documenting the attacks that they face, and researching, producing, and disseminating information on their struggles, strategies, and challenges:

  • Mobilizing urgent responses of international solidarity for WHRDs at risk through our international and regional networks, and our active membership.

Active dans l’organisation Peacebuild, en passant par l'Alliance canadienne féministe pour l'action internationale, Amnesty International et au Centre canadien de politiques alternatives (CCPA), Kate était une passionnée des droits des femmes et de l'égalité de genre qui a consacré sa carrière à lutter contre les inégalités et à faire du monde un lieu plus empathique.

Kate a été membre du comité de coordination de Social Watch et a contribué aux rapports nationaux canadiens de Social Watch. En tant que chercheuse principale du CCPA, Kate a été saluée dans son pays pour ses travaux de recherche, ses écrits et la production du rapport annuel intitulé « Les meilleures et les pires endroits du Canada où vivre en tant que femme ».

Entourée de sa famille, Kate est décédée paisiblement après trois ans de lutte contre le cancer du côlon. Ses proches la décrivent comme une « féministe drôle, sans peur et sans complexes ».

Apreciaremos propuestas de actividades referidas a todo el rango de áreas temáticas e intersecciones que son importantes para los movimientos feministas y por la justicia de género. En el formulario de propuesta podrás marcar más de un tema que se adecúe a tu actividad.

  • Cuerpos libres, espíritus libres: todo lo que que se relacione con la autonomía corporal, el género y la sexualidad, la salud y los derechos reproductivos, la libertad de vivir sin violencia de género, la libertad de vivir segurxs, el placer y la alegría en nuestros cuerpos diversos, identidades y comunidades, y mucho, mucho más.
  • Resistir frente a los antiderechos: tanto a nivel local como global, lxs feministas están liderando la resistencia frente a todas las formas de opresiones interseccionales, incluidos los fascismos, los fundamentalismos y los regímenes autoritarios; tenemos mucho para compartir y mucho sobre lo cual elaborar estrategias conjuntas.
  • Movimientos y organización: conozcamos nuestros respectivos movimientos. Desde el tránsito por los espacios de poder (internos y externos) hasta las estrategias de protección frente a la represión de las mujeres y las personas de género no normativo defensoras de los derechos humanos, desde el armado de alianzas hasta las formas creativas y exitosas de organización: aprendamos e inspirémonos recíprocamente.
  • Justicia económica y economías feministas: este tema abarca todos los esfuerzos feministas para transformar nuestras economías, desde el desafío de los modelos extractivistas dominantes y la defensa de los derechos laborales, hasta corporizar y vivir prácticas y alternativas económicas feministas en la vida cotidiana.
  • Financiar y dotar de recursos al activismo: obtener el financiamiento imprescindible constituye un desafío compartido para los movimientos de todo el mundo; estudiemos juntxs el ecosistema de financiamiento feminista, desde el análisis crítico hasta las experiencias de primera mano y las formas prácticas de financiar el trabajo feminista.
  • Clima, justicia ambiental, tierra y agua: la justicia ecológica y climática tiene profundas raíces en muchos de nuestros movimientos y comunidades; desde las tradiciones ancestrales hasta las visiones futuristas, desde los poblados ecológicos hasta las campañas para poner fin al extractivismo y acceder a la justicia, invitamos a abarcar un amplio rango de actividades sobre todos los aspectos de la justicia climática y ambiental.

Où est l’argent ? Un plaidoyer documenté pour soutenir les organisations féministe

Ce rapport révèle la réalité du financement des organisations féministes et de défense des droits des femmes dans un contexte de bouleversements politiques et financiers. S’appuyant sur plus de dix ans d’analyse depuis la dernière étude Où est l’argent ? de l’AWID (Arroser les feuilles, affamer les racines), il dresse un bilan des progrès réalisés, des lacunes persistantes et des menaces croissantes dans le domaine du financement féministe.

Le rapport salue le pouvoir des initiatives menées par les mouvements pour façonner le financement selon leurs propres conditions, tout en alertant sur les coupes massives dans l’aide au développement, le recul de la philanthropie et l’escalade des offensives anti-droits. 

Il appelle les bailleurs de fonds à investir massivement dans l’organisation féministe, infrastructure essentielle pour la justice et la libération, et invite les mouvements à réimaginer des modèles de financement audacieux et autodéterminés, fondés sur le soin, la solidarité et le pouvoir collectif.

An expert on social development and anthropologist by training, Mary was best known as a pioneer in the battle against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Born in Cairo Egypt in 1922, Mary’s work in development started early, as she joined the Youth Women’s Christians’ Association (YWCA). Mary was a member of the World Council of Churches and became increasingly concerned with issues regarding women’s health. Her long struggle against FGM proved fruitful in 2008, when Egypt finally criminalized the practice.

She is remembered as a mentor to many Egyptian feminists and activists.

Seismic shifts: A year of completion, transition and reflection | Annual report 2017

The past five years have been huge for AWID.

We have contributed to some major victories, like expanding the women’s rights funding landscape with ground-breaking, far-reaching research and advocacy. At the same time, we have experienced some devastating setbacks, including the assassination of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) like Berta Cacares of Honduras, Gauri Lankesh of India and Marielle Franco of Brazil, as well as the rise of anti-rights mobilizing in human rights spaces.

Five years ago, we committed to our movement-building role by producing knowledge on anti-rights movement trends, as well as on issues that feminists often engage with less, like illicit financial flows. We advocated side by side with our movement partners, strengthening young feminist and inter-generational activism, and expanding the holistic protection of WHRDs. As we close out the strategic plan, we are proud of our accomplishments and our growth as an organization. We end 2017 with renewed commitment, insights and learning for the continued struggle ahead!

Mridula fue una firme promotora de la salud de las mujeres en una época en la que el tema de la salud sexual y reproductiva de las mujeres se consideraba tabú en Fiji.

Mridula orientó los primeros trabajos del movimiento por los derechos de las mujeres en Fiji sobre derechos sexuales y reproductivos y, en septiembre de 1999, el Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas le otorgó un premio regional sobre salud y derechos reproductivos. Fue una activista férrea, comprometida e incansable y apasionada por la salud y el empoderamiento de las mujeres.

Fue una valiosa integrante del movimiento de mujeres y del movimiento feminista de Fiji y sus aportes se recordarán por siempre. Falleció en 2017 por causas naturales.

Amal était une femme politique et une parlementaire de premier plan en Libye.

Membre du corps professoral de l'Université de Benghazi de 1995 jusqu’à sa mort en 2017, elle militait par ailleurs au sein de la société civile et était membre de diverses initiatives sociales et politiques. Elle a aidé les familles des martyrs et des disparus et a été l'une des membres fondateurs-trices d'une initiative de jeunesse intitulée « Jeunesse de Benghazi en Libye ».

Lors des élections législatives de 2014, Amal avait été élue à la Chambre des représentants avec plus de 14 000 voix (le plus grand nombre de voix jamais obtenues aux élections de 2014). Amal restera dans les mémoires de beaucoup comme une femme politique qui a œuvré pour assurer un avenir meilleur dans l'un des contextes les plus difficiles et les plus conflictuels de la région.
