  • éveiller les consciences à propos des violations des droits humains et abus dont sont victimes les défenseuses des droits humains ainsi que de la violence systémique et de la discrimination qu’elles subissent ;

  • de mettre l’accent sur l’importance du souci de soi et du bien-être collectif, et de reconnaître le fait que ces notions peuvent revêtir une signification différente dans chaque culture ;
  • de documenter les violations dont sont victimes les défenseuses des droits humains dans une perspective féministe intersectionnelle ;

  • Promouvoir la collaboration et la coordination entre organisations de défense des droits humains et des droits des femmes au niveau international, et ce dans le but de d’apporter des réponses plus efficaces dans le domaine de la sureté et du bien-être des défenseuses des droits humains ;

  • Soutenir les réseaux régionaux de défenseur-es et les organisations, parmi lesquels l’Initiative mésoaméricaine des défenseuses des droits humains et la Coalition des défenseuses des droits humains du Moyen-Orient et d’Afrique du Nord, dans leur travail de promotion et de renforcement de l’action collective en faveur de la protection des défenseuses – en mettant en avant l’importance de la création de réseaux de solidarité et de protection, de la promotion du souci de soi ainsi que du plaidoyer et de la mobilisation en faveur de la sécurité des défenseuses ;

  • Faire en sorte que les défenseur-e-s des droits humains et les risques qui les menacent soient plus visibles et mieux reconnus, en rassemblant des informations sur les agressions dont elles sont victimes et en produisant et diffusant des documents sur leurs luttes, leurs stratégies et les difficultés qu’elles rencontrent ;

Sylvia Rivera

Sylvia Rivera was a civil rights activist, a transvestite and sex worker.

Known as the New York Drag queen of color, Silvia was fierce and tireless in her advocacy, in defense of those who  were marginalized and excluded as the “gay rights” movement mainstreamed in the United States in the early 1970’s.

In a well-known speech on Christopher Street Day in 1973, Sylvia, shouted through a crowd of LGBT community members:

“You all tell me, go and hide my tail between my legs.
I will no longer put up with this shit.
I have been beaten.
I have had my nose broken.
I have been thrown in jail.
I have lost my job.
I have lost my apartment.
For gay liberation, and you all treat me this way?
What the fuck’s wrong with you all?
Think about that!”

In 1969, at age 17, Silvia took part in the iconic Stonewall Riots by allegedly throwing the second Molotov cocktail to protest the police raid of the gay bar in Manhattan. She continued to be a central figure in the uprisings that followed, organizing rallies and fighting back police brutality.

In 1970, Sylvia worked together with Marsha P. Johnson to establish Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), a political collective and organisation that would set up projects of mutual support for trans people living on the streets, those struggling with drug addiction and in prisons and in particular for trans people of color and those living in poverty.

Defiant of labels, Silvia lived life in a way that challenged people in the gay liberation movement to think differently. She said:

“I left home at age 10 in 1961. I hustled on 42nd Street. The early 60s was not a good time for drag queens, effeminate boys or boys that wore makeup like we did. Back then we were beat up by the police, by everybody. I didn't really come out as a drag queen until the late 60s. when drag queens were arrested, what degradation there was. I remember the first time I got arrested, I wasn't even in full drag. I was walking down the street and the cops just snatched me. People now want to call me a lesbian because I'm with Julia, and I say, "No. I'm just me. I'm not a lesbian." I'm tired of being labeled. I don't even like the label transgender. I'm tired of living with labels. I just want to be who I am. I am Sylvia Rivera.

Through her activism and courage, Sylvia offered a mirror that reflected all that was wrong within society, but also the possibility of transformation. Sylvia was born in 1951 and passed away in 2002.

Demo WYSIWYG page for testing

In a context like Colombia’s, the work of imagining, dreaming and even creating processes of transformation so we can live in worlds that are decent, just, careful, and affectionate is worthy of admiration. It is an attack on life itself. Not just on the life of one official, but an attack on the soul, on the spirit of an entire people who feels frustrated.

We are thinking of them and of all the women leaders who are continuing the fight, having gained consciousness, from their respective ethnic, political, cultural, and identity locations and from their work, of their selves and the social problems facing their communities.

Cynthia Cockburn

#MeToo in China

The #MeToo movement in China was ignited in January 2018, impelled by the momentum of the #MeToo movement around the globe. The movement was a response to cultural and systemic problems in relation to gender and power within China. The foundation of the movement was laid over decades, with many years of debate and advocacy for gender equality finally erupting into a tremendous force across society. #MeToo has been driven mainly by young people, among whom are countless anonymous women and their allies, and they search for opportunities to realize the ultimate “Chinese Dream”: to transform China into a country with gender equality.

The environment for #MeToo movement is extremely adverse in China: the rule of law, the fairness and transparency of government action, and freedom of speech cannot be taken for granted by the movement in China but are the very goals it fights for. From the beginning, it has been an intense struggle, with every victim or activist who comes forward running tremendous risks. From being silenced, humiliated, or retaliated against, to having their safety jeopardized, every success of the #MeToo movement has been won by those who are courageous enough to bear the costs of speaking out and defying censorship.

#MeToo in China Exhibition was first held in 2019 and toured in 5 cities. The aim of the exhibition is to bring the personal experiences of the victims and activists to greater prominence and, through engagement with these stories, to inspire our audience to join in the fight. The exhibition has itself become a part of the #MeToo struggle—the exhibition has been beset by challenges on its tour throughout China, on more than one occasion even facing closure.

Hevrin Khalaf

Nicole’s creative practice is rooted in re-membering and re-gathering her ancestral knowing, including coffee divination and more recently working with plants and flower essences for community care and healing.
