Défenseur-e-s des droits humains
Les défenseuses des droits humains s’auto-identifient comme des femmes ou des personnes lesbiennes, bisexuelles, transgenres, queer, intersexes (LBT*QI) ou autres qui défendent les droits. Elles sont exposées à des risques et à des menaces de nature genrée à cause du travail qu’elles accomplissent en faveur des droits humains et/ou en conséquence directe de leur identité de genre ou de leur orientation sexuelle.
Les défenseuses des droits humains subissent une violence et une discrimination systématique du fait de leur identité, mais aussi à cause de la lutte indéfectible qu’elles mènent en faveur des droits, de l’égalité et de la justice.
Le programme Défenseuses des droits humains collabore avec des partenaires internationaux et régionaux ainsi qu’avec les membres de l’AWID pour éveiller les consciences à propos de ces risques et menaces, pour plaider en faveur de mesures féministes et holistiques de protection et de sécurité et enfin pour promouvoir activement une culture du souci de soi et du bien-être collectif au sein de nos mouvements.
Les risques et menaces qui planent sur les défenseuses
Les défenseuses des droits humains sont exposées aux mêmes types de risques que toutes les autres personnes qui défendent les droits humains, les communautés et l’environnement. Mais elles se heurtent également à des violences fondées sur le genre et à des risques spécifiques de nature genrée parce qu’elles remettent en cause les normes de genre en vigueur au sein de leur culture et de leur société.
En défendant les droits, les défenseuses des droits humains sont exposées aux risques suivants :
- les agressions physiques et la mort
- les tentatives d’intimidation et le harcèlement, y compris dans les espaces en ligne
- le harcèlement judiciaire et la criminalisation
- l’épuisement
Une approche holistique et collaborative de la sécurité
Nous travaillons en collaboration avec des réseaux internationaux et régionaux ainsi qu’avec nos membres pour :
- éveiller les consciences à propos des violations des droits humains et abus dont sont victimes les défenseuses des droits humains ainsi que de la violence systémique et de la discrimination qu’elles subissent ;
- renforcer les mécanismes de protection et faire en sorte que des réactions plus efficaces et plus rapides s’organisent quand des défenseuses sont en danger.
Nous travaillons à la promotion d’une approche holistique de la protection des défenseuses, qui suppose notamment :
- de mettre l’accent sur l’importance du souci de soi et du bien-être collectif, et de reconnaître le fait que ces notions peuvent revêtir une signification différente dans chaque culture ;
- de documenter les violations dont sont victimes les défenseuses des droits humains dans une perspective féministe intersectionnelle ;
- de promouvoir la reconnaissance et la célébration du travail et de la résilience des défenseuses des droits humains dans la société ; et
- de construire des espaces civiques propices au démantèlement des inégalités structurelles, sans restrictions ni obstacles.
Nos actions
Nous souhaitons contribuer à l’avènement d’un monde plus sûr pour les défenseuses des droits humains, leurs familles et leurs communautés. Nous pensons que le fait que les défenseuses œuvrent en faveur des droits et de la justice ne devrait pas leur faire courir de risques ; leur action devrait être appréciée et célébrée.

Promouvoir la collaboration et la coordination entre organisations de défense des droits humains et des droits des femmes au niveau international, et ce dans le but de d’apporter des réponses plus efficaces dans le domaine de la sureté et du bien-être des défenseuses des droits humains ;

Soutenir les réseaux régionaux de défenseur-es et les organisations, parmi lesquels l’Initiative mésoaméricaine des défenseuses des droits humains et la Coalition des défenseuses des droits humains du Moyen-Orient et d’Afrique du Nord, dans leur travail de promotion et de renforcement de l’action collective en faveur de la protection des défenseuses – en mettant en avant l’importance de la création de réseaux de solidarité et de protection, de la promotion du souci de soi ainsi que du plaidoyer et de la mobilisation en faveur de la sécurité des défenseuses ;

Faire en sorte que les défenseur-e-s des droits humains et les risques qui les menacent soient plus visibles et mieux reconnus, en rassemblant des informations sur les agressions dont elles sont victimes et en produisant et diffusant des documents sur leurs luttes, leurs stratégies et les difficultés qu’elles rencontrent ;

Organiser des réponses urgentes fondées sur la solidarité internationale dès que des défenseuses des droits humains sont en danger, par le biais de nos réseaux internationaux et régionaux mais aussi grâce à nos membres.

Mirna Teresa Suazo Martínez
Mirna Teresa Suazo Martínez was part of the Garifuna (Afro-descendent and Indigenous) Masca community, living on the North Caribbean coast of Honduras. She was a community leader and a fervent defender of the Indigenous territory, a land that was violated when the National Agrarian Institute of Honduras gave territorial licenses to people outside of the community.
This deplorable deed resulted in repeated harassment, abuse and violence against the Masca, where economic interests of different groups met those of Honduran armed forces and authorities. According to the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH), the strategy of these groups is to evict and exterminate the Indigenous population.
“Masca, the Garifuna community located next to the Cuyamel Valley, is part of the area of influence of one of the supposed model cities, a situation that has triggered territorial pressures along the Garifuna coast.” - OFRANEH, 8 September 2019
Mirna Teresa, president of the Board of Trustees of the Masca Community in Omoa, was also firmly rejecting the construction of two hydroelectric plants on the river that carries the same name as her community, Masca.
“The Garífuna community attributes the worsening of the situation in their region to their opposition to tourist exploitation, the monoculture of African palm and drug trafficking, at the same time that it seeks to build an alternative life through the cultivation of coconut and other products for self-consumption.” - Voces Feministas, 10 September 2019
Mirna Teresa was murdered on 8 September 2019 in her Restaurant “Champa los Gemelos”.
She was one of six Garifuna women defenders murdered between September and October 2019 alone. According to OFRANEH, there was no investigation by the authorities into these crimes.
“In the case of the Garífuna communities, a large part of the homicides are related to land tenure and land management. However, squabbles between organized crime have resulted in murders, such as the recent ones in Santa Rosa de Aguán.” - OFRANEH, 8 September 2019
2018: Supporting feminist movements to thrive and disrupt
This report looks back and celebrates the first year of AWID’s new strategic plan as we took our first steps towards our desired outcomes of supporting feminist movements to thrive, challenging anti-rights agendas and co-creating feminist realities.
We worked with feminists to disrupt anti-rights agendas, achieving important victories fought and won within the United Nations system when ground-breaking language on structural discrimination, sexual rights, and states’ obligations were included in a number of resolutions. Yes, the multilateral system is in crisis and in need of serious strengthening but these victories are important as they contribute to the legitimacy of feminist demands, providing feminist movements with more pressure points and momentum to advance our agendas.
We tried and tested different ways to build knowledge with feminist movements through webinars, podcasts and ‘live’ conversations. We developed facilitation guides with popular educators to reclaim knowledge in the interest of social and gender justice, even about a topic as seemingly opaque as illicit funding flows. We commissioned blogs and opinions about how feminist groups fund and resource themselves and threw light on the threats facing our human rights systems.
Within AWID, we practiced and learned from our shared leadership approach, and told the story of the trials and tribulations of co-leading a global, virtual organization. We don’t have a definitive answer to what feminist leadership looks like, but we know, a year on, that a continued commitment to collective experimentation and learning has enabled us to keep building an organization that we are all excited to contribute to.
As we look back on this year, we want to thank all our friends and supporters, colleagues and companions, who have given their time and shared their wealth of knowledge and wisdom with us. We want to thank our members who helped frame our strategic plan and joined us to make feminist demands. We could not do this work without you.

Barbara Allimadi
Barbara Allimadi fue una activista política y defensora de los derechos humanos de Uganda. En 2012, co-organizó una protesta contra la agresión policial a Ingrid Turinawe, una figura política de la oposición, que fue televisada y muestra cómo un policía le aprieta el pecho. Durante la protesta, Barbara, junto con otras compañeras activistas, se quitaron la ropa hasta quedarse en sujetador frente a la Estación Central de Policía de Kampala. Este hecho pasó a conocerse en Uganda como la infame "protesta de los sujetadores".

Barbara se licenció en Ingeniería Electrónica y de Comunicaciones en la Universidad Metropolitana de Londres, y ejerció como ingeniera de redes en el Reino Unido. Era,además, una fan entusiasta de la música reggae. Regresó a Uganda en 2007, cuando su madre falleció.
En 2019, fue nombrada Coordinadora de Asuntos Internacionales y de la Diáspora de la Alianza para la Transformación Nacional (ANT, por sus siglas en inglés), un partido político lanzado ese año por un líder de la oposición.

Barbara falleció el 27 de abril de 2020.

2022: Transitions, Inspiration & Collective Power
Our strategic plan “Feminist Realities” completed its final year at the end of 2022. For the past five years, this bold framework pushed us to go beyond feminist futures and to recognize the feminist solutions and ways of life that already exist in the here and now. Realities that must be uplifted, celebrated, and popularized. The Feminist Economies We Love multimedia story project and Our:Resource knowledge hub on autonomous ways to resource feminist activism are just two examples of this visionary work, always deeply collective with diverse feminist movements.

5 pm, tonight.
The handwriting on the invitation—
coily and brusque—
I’ve seen it five times in five years.
My body rouses,
feverish.
I need to fuck myself first.
The tide is high tonight and
I get
off.
I want to slow everything down,
taste time and space, etch them
into memory.

I’ve never been to this part of town before.
Unknown places excite me,
the way limbs and veins and bones
resist decay,
their fate uncertain.
At the door, I think twice.
The hallway is pitch black
and it makes me pause.
On the other side,
a portal of smell and color
opens like a curse,
into a sunny afternoon.
The breeze
makes my hair dance,
piques its curiosity,
compels it to move.
I hear the wheelchair whirring,
shaping the shadows.
Then I see them:
a lynx face
and a body like mine
and I find myself desiring both
again.
The creature motions me closer.
Their gestures write a sentence;
as I move toward them,
I notice its details:
wither, flesh, bliss
On their command, the vine that covers the hallway
hugging warm stones,
snakes up the wall.
It becomes a verb,
“to climb,”
and I’m reorientated when their claws point
to the vine-bed in the center.
I hear the wheels behind me,
then that sound.
It reverberates
like no other.
Their long black wings
elevate toward the ceiling
then they lunge forward.
The feline vision scans every detail,
every change,
every longing.
Can desire liquefy your muscles?
Can it act sweeter than the strongest
of tranquilizers?
A lynx sews the world
across our differences,
weaving lace around my knees.
Can desire crush the distance of the world,
compressing the seconds?
They come closer still,
lynx eye meeting human eye,
sniffing the air,
turning body into
urgency.
They beat down their wings.
Stirred,
the vines tangle around my waist/waste.
Their tongue thins time,
shifting grounds,
soothes, with their magic,
what stirs beneath.
I see the world in you, and the
world is exhausted.
Then they plead:
Let me feast on you.

Biography
Isabel is a feminist from the United Kingdom with over a decade of experience in feminist responses to fascisms, fundamentalisms, and anti-rights trends. At AWID, her work centers on knowledge-building and has included leading the production of the Rights at Risk series in collaboration with the Observatory on the Universality of Rights (OURs). She holds a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and previously worked with Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML). She is passionate about cross-movement work, movement-centered knowledge-building, and the use of creative expression to disrupt systems of oppression. Outside of work, Isabel is active in various disability justice spaces for collective care, learning, and advocacy.
