Paying Tribute to Women Human Rights Defenders
Today, on International Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) Day, and as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence Campaign, we invite you to join us in honouring and commemorating feminists and Women Human Rights Defenders who are no longer with us.
This is AWID’s 5th Online Tribute to WHRDs who have passed.
The Tribute celebrates and commemorates WHRDs from all over the world who continue to inspire and encourage us with their achievements, hard won struggles, fought for and with the inspiring legacies they have left behind.
60 WHRDs, from nine regions and thirty countries have been featured in this year’s Tribute.
They were journalists, indigenous and environmental rights activists, scholars, advocates for trans and LGBQI rights, politicians, writers, lawyers, defenders of sex workers’ rights, survivors of violence against women in wars.
They have fought for peasants’ rights, land rights, ecological justice and advocated against rape and systematic misuse of power in patriarchal structures.
These WHRDs, even though they are no longer with us, embody the diversity of our movements, the memory of our collective struggles, the wealth of feminist knowledge, the stubbornness to hold up our visions and continue despite challenges that may arise. While many have passed away due to old age or illness, too many commemorated in this Tribute have been killed as a result of their work.
