Meet AWID’s Incoming Co-Executive Directors
We are pleased to share the news - as those of you at our recent AWID Forum already heard: the Board of Directors decided to hire Hakima Abbas and Cindy Clark as Co-Executive Directors of AWID.
Cindy and Hakima chose to apply together for the Co-Executive Director roles, reflecting their strong working relationship, complementary skills and expertise.
Our new co-EDs
Hakima joined AWID in 2013 in the role of Director of Programs, where she strategically leads our work on Women Human Rights Defenders, Economic Justice, Young Feminist Activism, and Challenging Fundamentalisms.
Cindy has played various roles since she joined AWID in 2007 to manage our “Where is the Money for Women’s Rights” program--and currently serves as Director of Organizational Learning and Strengthening, where she is responsible for developing and strengthening the internal work processes necessary to support AWID’s geographically dispersed staff and demanding programs.
This hiring is the result of an internal recruitment process
It was designed to rigorously assess Cindy's and Hakima's individual and combined capacities and was carried out with extensive inputs from AWID staff and external references.
The Board of Directors, in consultation with staff, decided to pursue a shift in our executive leadership model by seeking expressions of interest in Co-Executive Director roles. This shift was undertaken in the interests of deepening our practice of shared leadership as an organization as well as supporting sustainability in a demanding role.
Hakima and Cindy take up their roles as Co-Executive Directors of AWID on the 1st of January 2017.
Lydia Alpizar, the outgoing Executive Director, will provide accompaniment for them in the first half of 2017, to support a smooth transition.
We want to thank Lydia again for all that she has done to serve AWID during her 10 years as Executive Director. Lydia’s leadership and dedication has been pivotal to strengthening AWID and our role as a global feminist movement-support organization. I also want to congratulate Hakima and Cindy as they embark on this next stage of their journey with AWID.
All of us at AWID are excited about this new stage in the organization’s life cycle.
As always, AWID welcomes your comments and feedback as we embark on our new strategic planning process.
