Important Leadership Transition at AWID: message from Myrna Cunningham
Lydia Alpízar Durán will be stepping down as AWID’s Executive Director effective January 2017. Read the message from Myrna Cunningham, Board President about this key organizational transition moment.
Dear AWID members, partners, allies and donors,
Receive warm greetings from all the members of AWID Board of Directors. Following Lydia’s message, I would like to say that the process to plan Lydia’s succession started almost two years ago with the idea to deepen shared leadership in the organization.
With this effort we are building from diverse ancestral practices and experiences, such as indigenous peoples movements, and also from feminist and women’s rights organizations. The process has been a collective undertaking, involving Board, staff, as well as key partners, allies and donors.
This leadership transition is one of several important organizational processes underway at AWID:
- finalizing the implementation of our current strategic plan, including the AWID International Forum next week;
- undertaking an external evaluation of that plan;
- preparing to launch at the end of this year our new strategic planning process.
We are fortunate to be engaging in these processes with a solid programmatic foundation, the support of many long-standing funders and partners, an incredibly diverse and committed team, and over 5,000 individual and institutional members from 163 countries.
Where are we in this leadership transition?
After looking into different options for leadership models, our Board of Directors developed a job description and principles for the executive functions. We decided to prioritize an internal recruitment process first, fully recognizing the great potential that exists within the current team. We will make an announcement about the results of this process at the upcoming Forum.
AWID will be 35 years old next year. There is a rich history behind us. We are confident that our organization will continue to thrive and to serve our movements and constituencies especially given current contexts, full of challenges but also full of promises.
On behalf of AWID’s Board and Staff, I want to thank Lydia for all her commitment, hard work, passion, vision and contributions to AWID and our movements.
We will launch AWID’s 35th Anniversary celebrations and this important leadership transition at our Forum in Brazil next week. We hope to see you all there!
We welcome your feedback.
