Goodbye from Lydia
| By Lydia Alpízar Durán
At the end of this month my term as AWID’s Executive Director will come to an end.
This past decade has been an intense ride where, as AWID, we were able to dream together with many of you, and see quite a few of our dreams become a reality, contributing to strengthen our movements and advance women’s rights and gender justice. It has been an honour and a pleasure to play this role at AWID all these years.
I am convinced that in order for us all to succeed, we need each other; and that none of our achievements are really individual ones, but the result of our collective work and power.
This is why I want to thank each and every one of you.
You know who you are, those who worked alongside me and our team all these years: those who were there to advise us, support us, push back, challenge us to be better and grow, partner with us, take risks together, laugh and celebrate with us. I want to once again thank my predecessor, Joanna Kerr, for her leadership, hard work and vision that established a solid base from where to build from. I want to thank the many people who served on our Board of Directors these last few years, for their support, vision and wisdom and who contributed to make our organization better and stronger.
I want to celebrate and honor our staff, the amazing group of fun, passionate and committed feminists from around the world with whom I had the pleasure to serve and work together. I am proud of what we have been able to achieve together in the service of our movements.
I leave AWID really happy and satisfied with the work done over the past decade.
I am convinced this is the right time for me to go. I am truly excited about the moment our organization is at, one where two amazing feminist leaders, Cindy Clark and Hakima Abbas, will serve as Co-Executive Directors. As AWID embarks on a new strategic planning process I am excited to see where our membership, Board and Staff will take our organization next..
But whatever the path forward, it is clear, that in order to face the complex challenges of this crazy world of ours, we need each other at so many different levels.
We need radical forms of love
Where we are not only there for each other - we march alongside our compañerxs from feminist and women’s rights movements- but where we join actively in the struggles of other social justice movements and actors as well. We urgently need to figure out how to be our best at working together, at resisting, but also at continuing to dream, of the better world we all want to live in, together.
Thank you for all the recognition and for the many kind messages wishing me well in the new phase I am entering.
I want to send best wishes for these holidays. May the New Year bring us the wisdom, strength, boldness, endurance and passion needed face the world and its huge challenges.
