Journalist Poonam Agarwal charged after exposing military abuse

On 27 March 2017, human rights journalist Poonam Agarwal was charged under sections of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) and the Indian Penal Code relating to criminal trespass and abetting suicide. The Indian Army had filed a complaint against her in relation to a video report she had shot exposing the abuse of junior soldiers within the Army.

Honduras: Complaint against Centro de Estudios de la Mujer

On 28 February 2017, Suyapa Martínez was notified by the Civil Court of the district of Francisco Morazán, that the company Desarrollo Energético S.A. (DESA) had filed a lawsuit against Centro de Estudios de la Mujer – Honduras (Women Research Centre – Honduras, CEM-H) on the grounds of allegedly false declarations concerning the murder of human rights defender Berta Cáceres.

Vietnam: Free Tran Thi Nga

On 21 January 2017 human rights defender Ms Tran Thi Nga was arrested in Ha Nam province on charges of anti-state propaganda. Two days earlier, fellow human rights defender Mr Nguyen Van Oai was arrested in Nghe An province on charges of ‘resisting officials on duty’ and violating his probation.
