Living Goods began operating in Uganda in 2007. More than a decade later, the county has become the organization’s largest operating country working with 250 employees in 19 districts across Uganda supporting directly and through other implementing partners over 7,000 digitally empowered CHWs.
Beyond our direct operations, we support the Ugandan government and other implementing partners through direct technical assistance, capacity building, and financial support, and we actively contribute to policy processes at the national, district and community levels. Our overarching goal is to support the government in developing a sustainable integrated community health system that the Ministry of Health (MOH) can operate, manage, and fund to ensure the delivery of high-quality community health services.
Living Goods is also working closely with the government to advocate for increased data for decision-making to ultimately support the government’s implementation of more effective CHW programs. We regularly share data and knowledge on the supervision and monitoring of CHWs as well as other best practices. By demonstrating the effectiveness of CHWs, we aim to increase government, donor, and partner investment in community health.
Reporting to the CEO, Living Goods is looking for an experienced, adaptable Country Director to scale growth and impact in Uganda, our largest operating country and a hub for innovation.
This is a compelling opportunity for a seasoned Country Director to join a respected data-driven organization during a period of scale as we look to grow the number of CHWs we support in the country to more than 12,000 by 2021. Beyond traditional oversight of all things operational, the Uganda Country Director will ensure the implementation of organizational strategy, supporting functions of the global leadership team with a lens of continuous improvement and knowledge-sharing across the organization.
The Uganda County Director will hold primary responsibility for achieving country-wide impact at scale, through strengthening technology infrastructure, building human capital and enhancing both government, funding and community partnerships. Beyond these primary duties, the Uganda Country Director will also be a primary contributor driving organizational effectiveness, implementing a road-map of health acceleration, and setting the future for sustainable expansion. The Uganda Country Director will partner with the CEO and other members of the global executive team to design and develop our strategy, implement long-term plans, and achieve our goals for impact and scale.
The Uganda Country Director will also play a critical leadership role related to ensuring nimble and fast organizational growth. They will guide two Deputy Country Directors, a Health Director, and a matrixed senior management team on scaling effectively in existing and new districts, including building stronger partnerships that drive significant and measurable mortality reductions. Additionally, they will be a member of the global executive leadership team and a proactive internal thought partner, continuously assessing improvement strategies while externally representing Living Good’s mission and strengthening its global brand.
Drive and enhance strategy to deliver results. You will drive the development of country-level strategy. Primarily, you will oversee the implementation of that strategy, undertaking periodic review and realignment to ensure the country strategy is aligned with overall organizational strategy and is meeting country performance objectives. As part of Living Goods’ global executive team, you will also play a key role in organizational strategy, implementation and decision-making of higher-level initiatives that cut across Living Goods.
Identify, pursue, and establish partnerships. Maintain strong awareness of the Uganda health-financing landscape to ensure sustainable operations. Manage and broker deals with National and District government, and develop additional in-country partnerships to deliver long term organization goals. Collaborate with the business development department to identify, track and coordinate funding opportunities; establish and develop working relationships with key donors and actively develop local funding sources. Raise Living Goods’ visibility at conferences and meetings and identify opportunities to showcase Living Goods’ work.
Ensure an efficient and effective organization. Design and redesign organization structure to implement the country strategy efficiently and effectively. Share knowledge and best practices with functional and country teams to amplify impact. Develop and implement policies, systems and SOPs in order to support the effectiveness of the operations.
Lead, grow, and develop a high-performing team. Directly manage several director-level staff (health, operations, health system strengthening, advocacy and government relations) while guiding a matrixed team of further senior staff (technology, finance, people and culture). Contribute to recruitment and retention efforts through coaching, mentoring, and career development. Monitor team performance against benchmarks and promote accountability.
Oversee financial management. Ensure that the planning, control of expenditure and disbursement of resources is in accordance with established procedures and maintain the financial and legal integrity of the organization.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, & ATTRIBUTES
Executive leader. You have over 15 years’ relevant experience with at least 8 years in leadership and management. MBA, MPH, or related advanced degree preferred.
Track record leading country operations. You have at least 3 years of experience leading country operations at a similar organization. You have provided leadership, direction and management of teams in Africa.
Strategic thinker and decision-maker. You have a track record developing, adapting, and implementing strategic plans that deliver results and take evolving dynamics into consideration. You’re able to develop and operationalize strategy into action for the organization as whole. You make sound decisions based on the organizational needs and objectives.
Team leader and builder. You know how to motivate people and offer guidance and opportunities that help staff learn, grow, and thrive. You have effectively managed teams in a matrix environment. You know how to build a culture of high performance.
A natural connector and fundraiser: You are able to build and sustain relationships with Ministries of Health and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). You are able to identify new donors and partners to work with programs. You are able to spot trends and keep the Living Goods’ executive team informed about community health needs and opportunities in the country. You’re skilled in dealing with Government and Ministry entities and the levels of complexity, stakeholder engagement and decision making that come with this – particularly relating to local Ugandan partners.
