Mama Cash is looking for a Senior Programme Officer for Women’s Funds preferably based in Amsterdam. 

Mama Cash was the first international women’s fund in the world. Today, we provide grants and support to pioneering women’s, girls’ and trans people’s rights initiatives around the globe that challenge the root causes of injustice. Activists and donors join with Mama Cash to advance gender equality and respect for the human rights of all people.

Job summary

The Senior Programme Officer for Women’s Funds (SPO) leads a flagship programme area at Mama Cash. The SPO develops and implements the programmatic policy for the women’s funds strategy through grantmaking, accompaniment, fundraising and influencing the donor community.

The SPO may supervise multiple members within the team.

Purpose of the position:

The SPO oversees the review, management, and prioritisation of requests from women’s funds seeking funding from Mama Cash, and strategises with women’s funds individually and collectively to strengthen the financial sustainability of the women’s funds movement.

Essential job function:

A. Programmes

  • Identify and analyse regional and thematic developments and trends in global women’s philanthropy on an ongoing basis and maintain an expert understanding of the role of women’s funds in advancing women’s, girls’, trans and intersex people’s rights;
  • Support set overall programme budgets and manage the budget allocation for the women’s funds strategy;
  • Oversee the development of grantmaking policy, priorities and strategies for the Mama Cash strategy for women’s funds;
  • Provide accompaniment support to partner women’s funds, including strategising with them on building their skills and knowledge.
  • Develop and lead joint initiatives and collaborations with selected women’s funds.
  • Oversee the preparation of and contribute to written progress reports and recommendations to Mama Cash’s Board of Directors including on broader policy direction;
  • Build, manage and strengthen the Advisory Network relevant to the strategy;
  • Contribute to the development of improved learning, monitoring and evaluation;
  • Lead grantmaking related projects or those to strengthen team policies and practices.

B. Outreach and Communications

  • Act as a thought leader by articulating analysis of trends and grantmaking priorities relating to women’s funds.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Influencing the Donor Community strategy;
  • Conduct outreach for the strategy;
  • Assist the Philanthropic Partnerships and Communications teams in preparing funding proposals, donor reports and communications materials;
  • Promote knowledge of women’s funds within Mama Cash through social media, information sessions and presentations by visiting women’s funds;
  • Facilitate cross-team communications within Mama Cash.

C. Management and Supervision

  • Act as a thought leader by articulating analysis of trends and grantmaking priorities relating to women’s funds.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Influencing the Donor Community strategy;
  • Conduct outreach for the strategy;
  • Assist the Philanthropic Partnerships and Communications teams in preparing funding proposals, donor reports and communications materials;
  • Promote knowledge of women’s funds within Mama Cash through social media, information sessions and presentations by visiting women’s funds;
  • Facilitate cross-team communications within Mama Cash.

Knowlegde, skills and abilities:

  • Strong interest in the fields of women’s human rights, women’s philanthropy, and a commitment to the mission and vision of Mama Cash;
  • In-depth knowledge of women’s human rights, women’s rights movements and the contexts, networks and work of women’s funds;
  • Strong understanding of life stages of social justice organisations, and experience in building organisational capacities (including in the areas of board and governance, leadership and staffing, fundraising from individuals and institutions, infrastructure systems, and marketing and communications);
  • Strong programme management and organisational skills, including an attention to detail and the ability to manage complex tasks, plan and monitor, meet deadlines and motivate others to do the same, and work well across different team functions;
  • Superior communications skills including strong writing, negotiation and presentation skills and the ability to perform analytical and researched work and communicate findings to a range of audiences;
  • Demonstrated fluency in oral and written English, and French or Spanish;
  • Strong interpersonal skills including sensitivity and appreciation for diverse viewpoints and different communication styles in a politically and culturally diverse environment;
  • Well-developed management and people skills, with a demonstrated ability to support and encourage team members;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and show creativity in solving problems;
  • Financial management and budgeting proficiency;
  • Computer literate (proficient in MS Office, familiarity with database programmes);
  • At least 3 years knowledge of and familiarity with grant making processes and procedures preferred.

Education and experience:

  • Minimum 5 years substantive professional experience working for women’s rights. Experience working with, or funding, women’s funds strongly preferred;
  • A Masters degree in the social sciences or related field is preferred (such as gender studies, anthropology, sociology or international development);
  • Previous experience working or living in the global South and East preferred;
  • Experience raising money for women’s rights and knowledge of institutional donors that fund women’s human rights;
  • Experience with both supervision and management;
  • Experience managing a large budget.

The job is preferably located in Amsterdam.

We offer an engaging and professional work environment in an international foundation committed to diversity, solidarity, peace and justice. Our office is centrally located in Amsterdam.

The monthly salary for this position depends upon experience and is based on CAO Welzijn scale 11, (min.) € 3.044 (max.) € 4.728, 8% vacation, 13th month, and pension plan.
