Overview of the organization and initiative

The Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) is a global, feminist, membership, movement-support organisation. Our mission is to support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements to thrive, to be a driving force in challenging systems of oppression, and to co-create feminist realities. AWID envisions a world where feminist realities flourish, where resources and power are shared in ways that enable everyone, and future generations, to thrive and realize their full potential with dignity, love and respect, and where Earth nurtures life in all its diversity.

The Global Alliance for Sustainable Feminist Movements is an emerging multi-stakeholder initiative, currently hosted at AWID, focused on exponentially increasing, sustaining and improving financial and political support for women’s rights and feminist organizations and movements.

Currently, the Global Alliance is in its Design Phase until its planned launch in June 2022. The Design Phase is a period of co-creation during which members of the Reference Group share insights, ideas, and feedback on a range of topics that will determine the work, principles, and structure of the Global Alliance. Currently, the plan is to solicit feedback during the Design Phase about:

  1. The objectives of the Global Alliance
  2. The principles of the Global Alliance
  3. The scope of work and potential actions of the Global Alliance
  4. The membership structure, criteria, and benefits of the Global Alliance
  5. The governance structure of the Global Alliance, outside of the membership structure
  6. The accountability framework of the Global Alliance

A Planning Group currently consisting of 13 organizations has the responsibility of ensuring the integrity of the Design Phase and acting in a decision-making role until a governance structure is formalized. Currently, AWID is serving as a secretariat for the Global Alliance by providing administrative support alongside a part-time AWID staff member dedicated to the Global Alliance coordination.

Overview of the consultancy

AWID on behalf of the Global Alliance is looking for a creative team of feminist facilitators that have experience working with at least two of the Global Alliance’s four main stakeholder groups: governments, private philanthropy, women’s / feminist funds, and feminist civil society.

The facilitation team will accompany the Global Alliance throughout the final months of the Design Phase and the first months of the Global Alliance’s operational phase, with the possibility of an extension. The team will be expected to design and implement a participatory process to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Clarifying and consensus-building on the values and principles of the Global Alliance by May 2022
  2. Strategies and tools for supporting new members and leaders of the Global Alliance to understand and internalise the values as they join the Global Alliance and in an ongoing manner.
  3. Leading discussions on what accountability means for the Global Alliance’s work and how to operationalize it. Conversations to begin during the Design Phase with an understanding that they may not be concluded by June 2022.
  4. Hold space for the new leadership structure and support a process to determine their ways of working (tentatively coming on board in September).
