Programmes Director

Position Overview:

The Programmes Director is an exceptional, dynamic, self-driven, team player with a unique hybrid of activism and leadership qualities. Supported by a values oriented team, she has experience at senior management level, knowledge of and commitment to feminist principles and values and women’s human rights issues, and a sophisticated ability to forge mutually reinforcing programming partnerships with relevant women’s rights CSOs, academia, media, private sector, UN & AU counterparts and with bilateral and non-traditional funders and actors in order to stimulate action in the mobilization of visibility and resources to advance women’s rights and gender equality.

Main Responsibilities

Strategic Programme Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight, technical and programme management to ensure programmes delivery, high quality outputs, with accuracy and consistency;
  • Lead the development of organisational strategies of short, medium and long-term growth objectives;
  • Provide management advisory role on all aspects of programme support, including leading the core programmes team, and contributing to resource mobilisation;
  • Identify how to catalyse political debate and strategic action on issues emerging from UAF-Africa’s grant-making, in collaboration with other stakeholders, and to initiate and co-ordinate resultant initiatives;

Programmes Implementation

  • Develop a clear plan and strategy for programmes management to ensure effective implementation;
  • Monitor programmes budgets and prepare budget modifications where and when necessary;
  • Generate monthly programmes analysis reports for internal use;
  • Oversight for research and advocacy activities integrated in the overall programmes portfolio;
  • Strong understanding of feminist issues, advocacy, movement building and strengthening and/or funding environment facing women’s rights organisations in the global South;

Partnerships and Outreach

  • Contribute to proposal development for programmes growth;
  • Lead and manage programmes trends analysis for continuous improvement and growth;
  • Forge mutually reinforcing partnerships with relevant women’s rights CSO partners, academia, media, private sector, UN & AU counterparts and with bilateral and non-traditional funders and actors in order to stimulate action in the mobilisation of visibility and resources to advance and women’s rights and gender equality;

Grant Management

  • Primary responsibility of grants budget – ensure grants are awarded as per set guidelines;
  • Approval of expenses and expenditures within programmes;
  • Ensure that grants are awarded in line with funder requirements and regulations;

Relevant Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience of managing a diversified national /regional women’s/human rights programme in a funding setting working on grant making, advocacy, alliance building, action research and communications;
  • Feminist with in-depth contextual knowledge of the women’s rights situation on the continent and commitment to adhering to individual and organisational feminist principles and values;
  • Demonstrated expertise in successful resource mobilisation;
  • Proven experience in managing and leading virtual staff and team building;
  • Knowledge of feminist and social justice/development frameworks, donor liaison and management;
  • Familiarity with grantmaking would be an added advantage.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English (ability to write and speak French would be an added advantage);
