Program Officer, Grantmaking and Partnerships

MADRE is seeking a Program Officer to lead our work on building strong intergenerational leadership within and across progressive social movements. This is a full time position at MADRE working to advance the leadership, power and influence of girls and young women at all levels of movement building through long-term partnerships and new relationships to increase adolescent girls’ choices, power and voice. The position requires experience and practical expertise in program management and movement building and the ability to develop insight, concepts, strategies and relationships that help advance adolescent girls’ rights and leadership within the broader context of their families, communities and social justice movements. The Program Officer reports to the Director of Grantmaking and Partnerships and works to support the implementation of MADRE’s grantmaking strategies. This includes managing grant relationships and flow of information with MADRE’s partners in Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. This position will be based in New York City.
- Develop and implement grantmaking priorities and strategies that give greater power, visibility and voice to girls and young women at all levels within MADRE’s areas of program focus: Ending Gender Violence, Peace Building and Climate Justice.
- Responsible for handling all aspects of grantmaking from system and procedures, including preparation of relevant documents, to due diligence, to writing and preparing grant recommendations.
- Work closely with grantmaking and human rights advocacy teams to contribute to the implementation of grantmaking strategies and priorities through the lens of girls programming to support current and new partner organizations in different regions.
- Conduct mapping and needs assessment of organizations to incorporate into the strategy.
- Develop and manage a portfolio of grants working closely with the Director of Grantmaking and Partnerships.
- Provide insights and thought-leadership on programming, leadership and movement building focused on girls and young women.
- Manage the annual budget associated with the program.
- Manage special projects, conduct research and complete reports on context and strategic issues.
- Develop strong relationships with advisors, partners and grantees.
- Provide dedicated supervision to two members of the grantmaking and partnerships team.
Networking and Coordination
- Provide thought partnership and strategic support to grantees through selected field visits and through interactions at convenings and forums.
- Liaise with key stakeholders (girls’ funds, community-based and grassroots organizations, NoVo Foundation, other private and public funds and donors, and other international partners focused on adolescent girls and young women).
- Manage working relationships with peers and funding partners in women’s and girls’ rights communities so as to stay current on emerging strategies, potential partners and funding trends internationally.
- Engage with the international community of donors and NGOs working to advance girls rights, in conjunction with Director of Grantmaking and Partnerships.
- Represent MADRE at selected events (philanthropic, programmatic, etc.) as needed.
Knowledge Management and Sharing
- Work closely with programs staff overseeing our learning and assessment process to identify outcomes and impact of the Girls program at MADRE.
- Develop concept notes, project documents, proposals and research documents.
- Create presentations and materials to communicate the impact of our Intergenerational Leadership strategy among different audiences.
- Provide input and insight on how the movement building work of girls and young women intersects with other MADRE work to promote women’s rights.
- Support grantee partners to participate in annual adolescent girl community of practice convenings.
- Passionate about MADRE’s mission, committed to teamwork, and achieving results.
- 7/10+ years professional experience working on gender justice.
- Experience in grantmaking, especially in the Global South.
- Familiarity with intergenerational programs with a special focus on girls in disaster and conflict contexts.
- Work experience on ending violence against girls.
- Strong analytical skills and an intersectional feminist approach to position the work within broader progressive movements and change efforts.
- Experience working on social change strategies from multiple perspectives (policy reform, litigation, counseling, community organizing);
- Knowledge of philanthropy, with an emphasis on girl’s and women’s rights funders and NGOs; direct experience with philanthropy preferred;
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment managing competing priorities and prioritizing tasks.
- Strong supervisory skills and experience in leading teams.
- Excellent communication and written skills in both English and at least one other language (Spanish or Arabic preferred).
- Ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment and to maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to manage communications tactfully and professionally with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google computer applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides.
- Applicant must be willing to travel internationally between 5-10% of the time.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required (in person, via e-mail, and on telephone), and ability to compose effective, thoughtful correspondence.
