Program Officer, Economic Justice

The Program Officer is a full-time position working to support gender justice movements to mobilize resources, build social capital, and strengthen capacity. The Program Officer will support strategies for grantmaking, fundraising, communications, partnerships, and internal operations from within the Economic Justice team.

The Program Officer works across all Global Fund for Women’s priority regions with a focus on advancing economic justice as well as on other initiatives and themes, as assigned. The position requires practical expertise in project management and grantmaking and the ability to develop insight, concepts, strategies, and relationships that help quantifiably advance gender justice.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Grantmaking, Movement Building and Impact & Effectiveness:

  • Develop and manage a high-performing portfolio of select grantees, including reviewing profiles, grant proposals and reports, assessing and selecting grantees, and carrying out grantee check-in calls
  • Support existing initiatives on ending gender-based violence in the garment industry, supporting domestic workers’ rights, climate justice and strengthening young women’s leadership
  • Conduct analysis to provide recommendations for expansion of lessons learned from these initiatives to other geographies and contexts.
  • Research, analyze and synthesize internal and external documents/data on topics within the portfolio as assigned
  • Provide support in developing key partnerships for new strategic areas

Thematic Strategy and Expertise:

  • Develop expertise and analysis to manage global programming for the economic justice portfolio
  • Support peer colleagues with thematic and country/regional expertise to inform their strategies and program implementation
  • Develop strong relationships with advisors, partners, and grantees

Fundraising:

  • Support Development efforts in line with overall organizational efforts to accelerate revenue
  • Provide information and analysis for Development, in line with approved strategy and in concert with team leadership
  • Provide inputs to final reports to donors within issue area to ensure updated and accurate information from the field is included
  • Participate in meetings and presentations to current and prospective donors, as required

Communications and Engagement:

  • Provide input and insight to colleagues in the Communications & Engagement team on the work of movements on advancing gender justice
  • Contribute to grantee insight and content to support advocacy efforts, e.g. in response to ‘crisis’ or ‘breaking news’ situations, or for planned proactive thematic campaign

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Be a key contributor within the Programs team and manage new areas of strategic grantmaking and gender justice
  • Play an active role in team meetings and in team planning
  • Participate in occasional cross-functional work teams and projects
  • Ensure compliance with Global Fund for Women policies and procedures

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Internal: Constructive and effective daily working relationships within the Programs Team and other teams. This position will report to the Senior Program Director for Economic Justice
  • External: Strategic, dynamic relationships with grantee partners, advisors, women’s movements, institutional donors, peer organizations, foundations, networks, international agencies, and organizations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required

  • 2-3 years of grantmaking and movement-strengthening experience
  • Familiarity with one of the regions where the Global Fund for Women is active (Asia Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean)
  • Strong commitment to women’s rights and to the mission and vision of the Global Fund for Women
  • Verbal and written fluency in English and at least one, or more, of Global Fund for Women’s operating languages (French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic)
  • Strong organizational and financial skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and inter-cultural skills and the ability to interact with individuals from different background and across various time zones
  • Strong writing, research, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated success working independently on comparable projects, including ability to manage hours and deliverables under tight deadlines
  • Ability to review and assess letters of inquiry, proposal applications
  • Fluency in MS Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required (~20%)

Strongly Preferred

  • Expertise in global issues of women’s economic justice
  • Knowledge of the Salesforce database
  • Knowledge of gender justice movements
  • Knowledge of innovative forms of organizing and movement-strengthening
  • Previous living, working, or studying experience in the global south or east

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Rights, International Development, Public Policy, Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Women’s Rights, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline is required.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • 2-3 years of grantmaking and movement-strengthening experience
