Financial Analyst

Established in 1982, the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) has been a part of the incredible ecosystem of women’s rights movements working to achieve gender equality, sustainable development and women's human rights worldwide.

AWID has a staff of over 45 who are based in 17 countries around the world.  

The Financial Analyst works with the Finance staff team to carry out a range of finance functions, specifically related to the areas of budgeting, accounting and resource mobilization.  Key areas of the Finance Analyst’s work include collaborating on detailed budget monitoring, carrying out ongoing accounting functions, and serving as the point of contact for staff to access and participate in the financial work of the organization. This role plays a key support to both the Director of Finance & Administration and the Controller, and coordinates and liaises across staff teams.  

We are seeking a multi-faceted individual who has solid financial experience combined with the communication skills needed to work successfully in a virtual, decentralized organization.  This is an intermediate-level finance position.

Reports to:

Works under the direction of the Controller and Director of Finance & Administration.  Reports to Director of Finance & Administration.

Responsibilities: 

Budgeting and Monitoring

  • works with staff teams on drafting and monitoring the annual organizational budget

  • works with staff team to ensure accuracy in coding and ledger entries, and monitoring program budgets

  • coordinates quarterly budget monitoring with staff teams

  • carries out finance work on projects and initiatives such as the Forum, CMI and others

Resource Mobilization

  • collaborates on and supports donor budgets and reporting

  • tracks funder contract requirements and timelines and assists with coordination with the RM staff team

Accounting and Audit

  • supports the accounts payable functions – payments, entries, documentation, ongoing reconciliations, ensuring accuracy, and troubleshooting issues

  • works on month-end accounting processes – schedules for AP, allocations, journal entries, capital depreciation, funding allocations, etc.

  • assists in preparing monthly financial statements

  • assists with the annual audit preparation

  • supports team with other functions  as needed, e.g. banking, reconciliations, issue resolution, etc.

Other Responsibilities

  • key contact for AWID staff for queries, orientation, training and compliance with internal controls and policies

  • generally, contributes to the functioning of the finance work including internal controls, policies and procedures and other operations

  • participates in AWID staff activities

  • other duties as assigned  

Qualifications:

Experience

  • 4 to 6 years experience

  • Some of which is in the non-profit sector

  • Includes experience with budget management and monitoring for a non-profit organization

  • Accounting knowledge, preferably experience with Quickbooks

Academic Qualifications

  • Post secondary education or progressive experience in a related field Finance and/or Accounting

Knowledge & Other Requirements

  • Proven ability to coordinate, monitor multiple projects, deliverables and deadlines; ability to prioritize, multi task, flexibility/agility in line with area needs

  • Strong problem solving abilities (independently and collaborative)

  • Strong initiative, time management and follow through skills

  • Financial analysis and accounting skills, preferably including work with budgets, reporting, and multiple currencies

  • Detail orientation, high degree of accuracy and thoroughness of work

  • Ability to prioritize, multi task, flexibility/agility as aligned with changing area needs

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills; written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Displays good judgment, sensitivity and attention to communication

  • Ability to work effectively in a virtual environment; including solid computer skills (MS Office Suite, Google Apps, instant messaging and virtual team collaboration software)

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision /independently

  • Maintain and respect confidentiality

  • Committed to the principles and values of anti-oppression

  • May be requested to travel internationally (approx. 1-2 weeks per year)

Assets

  • Other languages, especially Spanish - an asset

  • Experience working in a global, virtual organization

  • Flexible schedule

  • Knowledge of US GAAP and foreign exchange transactions/issues
