Director, Global Business Development

Women for Women International works in some of the most dangerous places to be a woman. We serve women survivors of war in conflict and post-conflict areas around the world in 8 countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Eastern Congo, and Northern Nigeria. Our core belief is that stronger women build stronger nations; and with access to knowledge, resources, and a support network, a woman rebuilds her life and improves her community.

Our model works and we have the data to prove it. In our 26-year history, Women for Women International has reached over half a million women. The women we work with across 3 continents earn just $0.81 a day when we enroll them. At graduation, it’s $2.11, nearly tripled.

Our impact goes beyond income. The number of women who say at least one household member went to sleep hungry in the last four weeks has gone from 18% to 5%. And more women say they speak out against women's abuse: 26% report having publicly spoken in the last 6 months against physically abusing women.

When women have the right tools, they realize the power within themselves to transform their lives, their families, their communities, and finally their entire nations.


Women for Women International has the ambition to dramatically increase grant funding to support programming that has been proven to be transformative for marginalized women survivors of war in fragile and conflict affected countries.

The Director of Global Business Development will collaboratively weave together existing strategies at national and regional level into a comprehensive Global Business Development Strategy that can guide business development across the geographic footprint of the organization. This position will be responsible to ensure that the strategy is adaptive to a dynamic and sometimes disruptive global context, supporting the global organization to build the relationships and partnerships needed for global BDU staff and staff in county to go after the most strategic opportunities. This position is responsible to ensure that the Global Board of Directors and the Executive Leadership Team remains informed of progress towards targets and engaged, as appropriate or advantageous, in BDU activity.

In addition to strategic coordination and leadership, the Director of Global Business Development will take an active role in identifying suspects, cultivating prospects, leading proposal development processes as needed and ensuring effective stewardship of current funding partnerships. The global organization has strong teams that carry forward business development from the first identification of a prospect all the way through to the final grant report. This position is envisioned to help ensure that all the teams and the processes continue to work smoothly, efficiently and effectively. Given an ambitious growth strategy, a high volume of opportunities, proposals and activity, the ideal applicant will also have demonstrated experience in contributing to the nuts and bolts of successful proposals and the willingness to take part in any part of the process to ensure success.

Women for Women International offices around the world are increasing their business development capacity and, in some instances, hiring dedicated professional business development staff. The Global Business Development Director will support the continued capacity building of the global fundraising operations and help to ensure that country offices get the support they need to grow their capacity to raise money locally. In addition, this position will help to ensure that implementing country offices can have the most efficient and streamlined engagement with business development staff globally.

The location for this position is flexible with a preference for candidates from a region where WfWI currently works (Africa, Central Asia, Middle East, Europe or the US).

Duties and Responsibilities:

Global Business Development Strategy

  • We have an adaptive and rolling strategy process. Keep track of global trends and new developments and draw up analysis from each fundraising operation in order to update and implement a multi-year strategy and an annual business development workplan that will enable WfWI to meet ambitious revenue targets.
  • Ensure that the Global Pipeline is regularly updated and serves to help teams track progress towards revenue targets and informs decision-makers on progress toward goals.
  • Report progress to and discuss challenges with the Leadership Teams and appropriate Board committees and the Global Board of Directors.
  • Work closely with key fundraisers, program staff and other teams across WfWI to implement effective strategies and approaches to grow funding and scale our programs.
  • Work across all parts of the organization that are engaging in various forms of partnership to ensure that we can leverage these partners in global BDU efforts, including identifying and cultivating strategic partnership relationships.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities of relevant WfWI actors.
  • Support Country Office and program staff to understand and implement best practice in fundraising and partnerships with governments, institutions, foundations and corporations.
  • Builds strong relationships across the organization to strategically deploy programmatic experts, staff and leadership towards implementation of the Global BDU Strategy, including support to the CEO and other Executive Leadership and staff in country offices in efforts to build relationships with donors, steward current philanthropic partnerships and achieve strategic goals.

Identify Funding Sources and Cultivate Donors

  • Manage business intelligence collection efforts by staying abreast of overall funding developments and understanding overall funder priorities and calls for proposals.
  • Coordinate & manage the research and strategy for pursuing viable funding opportunities from foundation, corporations and government donors.
  • Build and maintain an active pipeline of prospects, in keeping with revenue targets.
  • Develop leads on promising funding opportunities by initiating outreach and strengthening relationships with current and potential donors, as required.
  • Identify and build partnerships with other NGOs for joint proposals.
  • Regularly communicate with country offices to gather business intelligence and keep them abreast of new areas of business development and ensure that each country has a comprehensive donor mapping and a business development strategy.
  • Ensure that there is a strategic approach for key priority funders including mapping our approach to funding.

Prepare Proposals

  • Depending on the size and complexity of the proposal, serve as lead coordinator, proposal reviewer, and/or lead writer on submissions.
  • When coordinating a submission, manage technical writer, researchers or consultants where applicable, and anyone else directly involved in the application to produce compelling and competitive proposals.
  • Train other staff members to coordinate all aspects of proposal development and to write high-quality proposals.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with technical specialists, subject-matter experts, and professional writers to contribute to technical solution designs, reviews, and analysis of proposals and business development strategy.
  • Contribute to technical solution design processes as needed.
  • Ensure that relevant internal stakeholders contribute to proposal design and that, when appropriate, relevant staff approve the final proposal.
  • Liaise with colleagues in the development of a coherent budget, ensuring adherence to grantor criteria in relation to accepted costs, percentages, and format.

Support Country Office Business Development

  • Coach and mentor Country Office teams to pursue local opportunities.
  • Support Country Offices with updating of their business development plans
  • Identify resources needed to strengthen fundraising capacity in countries.
  • Develop a plan for strengthening business development in each Country Office.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Prepare and communicate analysis and trends to the Leadership Team and Global Board of Directors.
  • Communicate with colleagues in Global Programs Unit, Finance, Development, and the UK office. - Must be able to operate in an environment with over-lapping roles.
  • Develop an effective process for sharing proposals, templates, and cases for support so that all WfWI fundraisers can access material helpful to support their fundraising efforts.
  • Participate in internal meetings and processes to represent the global BDU teams as needed.
  • Performance manage direct reports in line with WfWI’s performance management framework, including setting of annual performance objectives, development plans, appraisals throughout the year, and regular one-on-one meetings
  • Responsible for training, developing, managing and leading staff as well as hiring appropriate staff
  • Ensure safeguarding measures are implemented within area of responsibility
  • Follow up, and address Code of Conduct or Safeguarding issues appropriately
  • Adhere to WfWI’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policies and report concerns

This position will require regular national and international travel, estimated at 25% but subject to change.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s degree preferred, in a relevant subject, or the equivalent in experience.
  • At least ten years of experience in fundraising with hands on experience across at least two funding channels (i.e., foundations; corporate partnerships; or government (bilateral or multi-lateral) for an international NGO.
  • Proven track record of success in fundraising with evidence of personal engagement and leadership of successful, large, and complex proposals and pitches.
  • Proven successful grant writing experience.
  • Adopts a growth mindset and has demonstrated experience in relationship-based fundraising strategies.
  • Experience managing staff and working cross-departmental, cross-country contexts with a proven record of building, managing and working with virtual teams and creating an enabling environment.
  • Current and strategic understanding of the global humanitarian, development and gender funding environment and future trends.
  • Excellent spoken and written English to include research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Editing experience and strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience building the capacity of staff in country offices.
  • Independent, but good at working with a team and ability to coordinate with others to produce material on deadline, usually managing multiple deadlines.
  • Proven ability to build consensus and support across, up and down the organization.
  • Excellent budget management skills including the ability to oversee complex program budgets in compliance with donor requirements.
  • Certification or formal credentialing in nonprofit fundraising management or philanthropic leadership a plus.
  • Proficiency in French, Arabic, Swahili or Dari is a plus.
  • International work experience delivering restricted/unrestricted funded projects a plus.

  • Ability to travel as required and have flexible work schedule which may include early mornings, evenings and weekends. May be required to occasionally work beyond normally scheduled hours.
