Development Officer (Individual Giving)


Location: New York, NY, USA

Organization: International Women's Health Coalition

This position plays a key role in a busy seven-person Development team responsible for raising funds and strengthening a community of donors in support of sexual and reproductive health and rights. The Officer supports the Individual Giving team specifically, which raises $2.2M annually.


  • Collaborate with Vice President, Development and Communications; Major Gifts Director; Development staff; and executive support staff to steward individual mid-level donor relationships ($1K-$24,999) and cultivate relationships with new prospective supporters to the organization, including managing the Leadership Council membership in New York.
  • Collaborate with the Major Gifts Director to oversee the fundraising and production of the annual dinner in New York, including staffing of annual dinner leadership and events consultant, managing corporate outreach, and liaising with IWHC’s Development, Communications, and Program staff. This is IWHC’s flagship event and raises over $1M annually.
  • Collaborate with Major Gifts Director to plan, manage, and execute logistics for cultivation events in New York.


Individual Donor Relationships

  • Identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward mid-level donors and prospects;
  • Work with the Major Gifts Director to track individual giving to the organization by maintaining income tracking lists and ensuring scheduling of regular meetings to discuss donor and prospect strategy, timely renewal of gifts, and the achievement of fundraising targets;
  • Manage the Leadership Council membership including stewarding gifts renewals, maintaining regular correspondence with members, and developing customized engagement opportunities;
  • Work with Major Gifts Director to ensure proactive pipeline management and follow-up strategies for individual donors and prospects;
  • Draft correspondence and maintain department files related to individual giving.

New York Annual Dinner

  • Project manage the planning, fundraising, and execution of the event including:
  • Manage event timeline and schedule meetings;
  • Work with the Major Gifts Director to develop and staff dinner leadership, including IWHC Board members and top donors;
  • Coordinate event fundraising by developing budget and timelines, track revenue, invitation lists, and outreach of Dinner leadership, Board members, and staff;
  • Collaborate with Development and Communications staff on messaging, media, program, and web content for the dinner;
  • Liaise with and oversee consultants, vendors, and volunteers;
  • Oversee prospect research process carried out by prospect research team and interns and coordinate subsequent briefings, documents and correspondence;
  • Collaborate with Major Gifts Director and Vice President to design and implement annual dinner follow-up plan;
  • Work with Development Associate to ensure that data is captured in the database and post-event analysis is conducted.

Leadership Council and New York Cultivation Events

  • Plan and execute all New York-based cultivation events in collaboration the President, Vice President, Development and Communications, Major Gifts Director, and Program staff;
  • Coordinate all elements of events, including arranging venue and menus, developing invitations and event materials, and managing event program and follow-up;
  • Generate creative ideas for event content (e.g. themes, speakers, annual dinner honorees);
  • Collaborate with Communications staff on messaging, media, event program, and web content;
  • Track event budget and expenses;
  • Work with Development Associate to ensure that the appropriate data is captured in the database.

Department Systems and Administration

  • With the Development Associate manage departmental systems and administration;
  • Manage reports and files related to fundraising;
  • Liaise with Finance staff; Associate Director, Development; Development Associate; Major Gifts Director, Vice President, Development and Communications; and the President.

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to IWHC’s mission to promote, advocate and mobilize support for the advancement of sexual and reproductive rights and health, as well as contributing to the development and strengthening of the organization as a whole;
  • Contribute as an active member of the Development department and IWHC;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree and five to seven years professional experience required; minimum of three years in fundraising and/or special events.
  • Track record managing large fundraising events, including directly staffing the event committee.
  • Outstanding office skills, including high proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Facility with content management and fundraising software (Raiser’s Edge required).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff across an institution; strong team player with recognized leadership capacity, sense of humor, excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to build trust among team members.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to communicate directly and effectively with others.
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail, tolerant of some uncertainty; strong numeracy and problem solving skills, works well under pressure and multiple, competing demands.
  • High level of productivity, initiative, creativity and excellent judgment.
  • Self-motivated and able to function independently.
  • Willingness to work long hours as needed, especially in weeks leading up to major events or activities.
  • Passion for women’s health, reproductive rights, and/or international development a must.
