Communications Strategist

Overview of Position:

The Communications Strategist is a full time, one year fixed role focused on working with project teams to develop, implement and assess communication strategies linked to the following initiatives:

  • Advancing Universal Rights and Justice

  • Building Feminist Economies

  • Resourcing Feminist Movements

  • Co-Creating Feminist Realities (AWID Forum)

AWID is a global, feminist, membership, movement support organisation. Established in 1982, AWID’s mission is to support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements to thrive, to be a driving force in challenging systems of oppression, and to co-create feminist realities. AWID sees feminist movements as driving forces in confronting oppressions, generating alternatives and creating transformative changes. Our feminism aims to center the experiences, knowledge and visions of women, girls, trans, intersex and gender nonconforming people and movements most affected by the oppressions they seek to change. Our members play an important role in our governance, input into our strategies and are an essential part of our diverse constituencies.

To achieve its goals, AWID uses a number of tactics including advocacy, knowledge building, arts and culture, strategic information production and dissemination, online mobilization and media engagement. AWID works globally with a staff of over 45 who are based in 17 countries around the world.

Major Responsibilities

  • Works with the project teams to analyse and identify strategic communication goals and audiences

  • Carries out audience mapping and analysis

  • Designs and develops communication plans and strategies for key projects,  programmatic and institutional needs

  • Contributes to the development of communications skills in project design and implementation

  • Collaborates with the communications lead to ensure the production and dissemination of content in furtherance of strategic communication goals


  • Works with the Director of Information, Communications and Media to develop and implement a communications training plan for the ICM staff and wider AWID staff

  • Mentors and supports members of the ICM and project teams on strategic communications

  • Researches and creates briefing and training materials to keep ICM team up to date on current issues and trends

  • Coordinates internal online capacity building events on information, communications and media

Organizational Processes

  • Provide support for the monitoring & evaluation of communication strategies

  • Participates and contributes to ICM team coordination and planning meetings

  • Participates actively in organizational meetings, working groups and committees

  • Develops and monitors individual work plan that will document the timeline, requirements and deadlines to follow

  • Maintains collaborative relationships with staff across AWID to facilitate contact and communication

  • Ensures the timely and effective implementation of deliverables linked to individual work plans, including all activities, reports and evaluations

Staff management, development and support

  • Manages a team of 4-6 communications staff

  • Promotes an organizational culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and commitment to quality

  • Leads and mentors reporting staff (directly and functionally) who may be working remotely in multiple locations across multiple time zones

  • Sets explicit annual performance objectives for those staff reporting directly and identifies development goals

  • Provides guidance and coaching to those staff reporting directly in enabling them to meet their performance objectives

  • Provides regular feedback on performance of reporting staff (directly and functionally) relative to AWID’s overall outcomes and specific desired program outcomes

  • Contributes to the development of a high quality team in the organisation through participation in recruitment, evaluation and career development

Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies and plans for global organizations

  • Experience in developing and managing successful communication campaigns

  • In depth experience in capacity building on strategic communications

  • Training or facilitation experience

  • Excellent interpersonal understanding, relationship building and interpersonal skills to build strong alliances with diverse constituencies and manage complex politics, positioning and relationships

  • Strong written communication skills including editing and analysis in English; Spanish or French language skills a distinct advantage

  • Strong verbal communication in English; able to convey information clearly, concisely and in a compelling way  and strong public speaking abilities

  • Innovative and flexible; manages change

  • Results oriented and takes initiative

  • Demonstrated capacity to coordinate projects and establish focus (develop, communicate, monitor & evaluate) operational plans with multiple deliverables and deadlines and ability to plan, organize and lead the implementation of plans and processes

  • Demonstrated capacity to think strategically and analytically; expertise in complex problem solving, decision making and critical thinking skills

  • Strong time management, detail orientation and thoroughness of work

  • Stress management; ability to manage role demands

  • Highly computer literate, including:

    • Google Suite

    • MS Office Suite, presentation packages, Internet, and email

  • Ability to work remotely as part of a virtual team

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to travel internationally (approx. 4 weeks per year)

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Specialized experience in related areas such as communications, digital marketing, media, campaigning and information technology

  • Courses or certificates in Communications, Marketing, Women's/Feminist Studies, Coaching

  • Preference for trilingual applicants (English, Spanish and French)
