Call for submissions: Media Award, Zimbabwe

Gender and Media Connect is inviting entries from journalists in Zimbabwe working around print, broadcast, graphics and images (photojournalists and Cartoonists) for our inaugural 2017 "Gender and Media Awards". These awards will recognise both individuals and media houses that have worked towards improving gender equality and equity IN and THROUGH the media in Zimbabwe.


Why Awards

To recognize efforts by print and electronic media in promoting gender sensitivity in and through the media.

What the awards will look at:

Gender Sensitive Content

  • Breadth and depth of coverage
  • Story angles
  • Language
  • Content
  • Visuals
  • Placement of stories/information

Operations

  • Commitment to gender equity and practices (drafting, adoption and implementation of codes and policies)

The Criteria

All work submitted must have been produced between January 2016 and August 2017

Criteria for individual entries

  • A maximum of three entries per category

Criteria for institutional gender selection

  • The winner(s) will be decided by a high level panel of media and gender experts.

Criteria for gender sensitive newsmaker

  • The winner will be decided by a high level panel of media and gender experts.

Qualification for Entry

  • The work should be around topical issues in Zimbabwe.
  • The journalists must be based in Zimbabwe.
  • For the institutional category the organisation can either be mainstream or community media.

Award categories

Applications can be submitted in any of the following categories:

(1) Individual Category

  1. Print ( News Story, Feature story, specialized report)
  2. Radio (News Story, Feature, documentary)
  3. Television ( News Story, Feature or Documentary)
  4. Graphics and Images (Photographs and cartoons )

(2) Institutional Category

  • Media house/group (print, radio and television)

(3) Newsmaker Category

  • A person with a high level of contribution to the media either as a Source of news or information or as an analyst providing gender sensitive information

Selection Process/ adjudication

A panel of gender and media experts will consider the submitted entries and select the winners.
The panel will also select the institutional winners.

Key Dates for the Awards:

  • Entries open: 1 August 2017
  • Entries close: 31 October 2017
  • Processing the Stories submitted: November 2017

Entry Rules and Submission Guidelines

What do you need to submit?

For each entry, submit the following:

  1. The attached form
  2. Half a page biography related to your work
  3. Verification that this is your authentic work by an editor or manager, especially in instances where the work does not carry a by-line or production credit.
  4. Two samples of the item which you are submitting for an award (see file format section)

File Format

All entries must include the date and outlet in which they were published or broadcast.

  • Print entries should be submitted as a clean, legible PDF document. The date of publication must be clearly visible.

  • Photographs and cartoon entries should be sent, as published, in PDF format or as cuttings of the original published copy.

Electronic entries

  • Radio:
    All work must be submitted in the format in which it was broadcast.
    Emailed entries must be in MP3 format (not under 128 bitrate). Physical deliveries may be made on audio CD.
    Large files should be sent using Google Drive or other large file FTP services like Send Space and Big Files. If you choose to send files using a third party platform, please send an email to info@gmc.org.zw
    Links to podcasts, websites or Sound Cloud will not be accepted.

  • Television:
    All work must be submitted in the format in which it was broadcast.
    Emailed entries must be in MP4, AVI or MOV format. Physical deliveries may be made on DVD.
    Large files should be sent using Google Drive or other large file FTP services like Send Space and Big Files. If you choose to send files using a third party platform, please send an email to info@gmc.org.zw
    Links to websites or YouTube channels will not be accepted.

Delivery of entries

All individual entries must be submitted in the following ways:

  • By physical delivery to Gender and Media Awards 2017, Gender and Media Connect (GMC) 34 Colenbrander road, Milton Park, Harare
  • By email to info@gmc.org.zw

Follow these simple instructions to submit your entries:

  1. Fill in the form (PDF)
  2. Send the filled in form and your entries in one email to: info@gmc.org.zw
  3. Each entry must be accompanied by a separate submission form.
