Arts & Creative Expression (A&CE) Tactic Lead

Overview of the Position

Arts and Creative Expression, and feminist activism around them (also called ‘artivism’ or ‘creative activism’), is a key tactic to strengthening and supporting feminist and women’s rights organizations and movements, shifting narratives and disrupting existing norms. 

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced professional with strong background and interest in Art & Creative Activism, Movement Building, Project Management and a strong political commitment to advancing feminism, women’s rights and gender justice.

The Arts & Creative Expression (A&CE) Lead reports directly to the Director of Communications and Tactics and leads staff across the organisation in achieving program, and organisational objectives related to strengthening connections between social justice movement building, feminist activism and artistic practice. This full-time position is responsible for providing leadership for the development and implementation of AWID’s A&CE strategy.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide a strong voice, direction and coherent strategy to advancing women’s rights, gender justice, and feminist organizing through art and creative expression (A&CE) tactic strategies while supporting AWID staff to understand how A&CE can best support organizational objectives. 
  • Develop, review and implementation of A&CE tactic strategies and related work plans, including the development and monitoring of indicators and other mechanisms to evaluate the work of the tactic and its achievements.
  • Hold a bird’s eye view of all the ongoing and upcoming work related to A&CE tactic, and providing strategic direction, support with prioritization, and consistent support to staff in this area.
  • Ensure the timely and effective implementation of A&CE tactic activities and deliverables, as outlined in the work plan.
  • Ensure cross-team, cross-organizational coherence and connection of A&CE tactic work with other initiatives and teams in AWID, including intersections between initiative and tactical work.
  • Provide leadership and share information and knowledge on A&CE tactic strategic priorities among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure alignment, information-sharing and synergy between the A&CE tactic and other AWID teams by providing relevant project teams with appropriate support and leadership, and by liaising with initiative teams, managers and directors as needed.  
  • Build and maintain relationships with artists, and artist collectives both within AWID membership and externally. 
  • Represent AWID in relevant creative and activist convening spaces, and play a strategic role in ally convening spaces and processes.
  • Work with artists to support the achievement of organizational outcomes in line with organizational priorities.
  • Hold, develop, and maintain relationships with artivist and donor allies across movements that are relevant and key for the strategic implementation of AWID’s organizational plans.
  • Oversee the integration of A&CE priorities and activists throughout the AWID Forum (in content, as committee members, as audiences for CfP, etc. as relevant), and consistency between A&CE presence at the Forum and our organizational view of it, and guiding the Forum Curator

  • Promote an organizational culture of high performance and professional development and growth that values learning and teamwork.
  • Promote shared leadership and participatory processes within the A&CE tactic in its interactions with other AWID teams.
  • Participate in AWID organizational planning and learning processes, in realms feasible
  • Participate actively in organizational meetings, working groups and committees
  • Ensure the timely and effective implementation of deliverables linked to individual work plans, including all activities, reports and evaluations.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar role within a non-profit development, gender, human rights, arts and/or funding organization;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing cultural/creative strategies; 
  • Experience working alongside artists, cultural groups and collectives; 
  • Curatorial and event management experience; 
  • Well versed with the current cultural/creative landscape as pertains to women’s rights, gender equality and justice;
  • Experience in project and program management; ability to meet multiple deliverables and deadlines; ability to plan, organize and lead the implementation of plans and processes;
  • Demonstrated capacity to think strategically and analytically, with expertise in complex problem solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills, displays good judgment;
  • Demonstrated capacity to network and build strategic alliances internationally with individual artists, artist collectives, donors, and/or other civil society organizations and other external stakeholder groups;
  • Excellent relationships both with key donors for women’s rights, gender equality and justice, and international and/or regional feminist and women’s rights organizations and networks;
  • Strong financial management acumen; knowledge of accounting procedures and protocols, budgeting and financial analysis;
  • Ability to work with a diverse and virtual team and engage team members, build consensus, and build high performance teams;
  • Strong public speaker – able to convey information clearly, concisely and in a compelling way;
  • Experience working with diverse communities from multiple identities across the globe, in a virtual environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Expertise in the use of MS Office software and online collaborative tools such G Suite:

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

  • University degree or equivalent experience in social sciences, women’s rights, not-for-profit administration, international development, or other related field.
  • Strong political commitment to feminist theory and women’s rights frameworks.
  • Courses or certificates in Art History, Curatorial, or Museum Studies.
  • Versed in one or more of AWID languages (Spanish/French) in addition to English;
  • The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and interest in feminist art history and theory, and strong organizational, research, and writing skills.
  • Past experience working in arts organizations with exhibition preparation is a plus.
  • Training or facilitation experience.
  • Experience using Slack and Asana and other similar online collaborative tools;

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to travel internationally (approx. 6-8 weeks per year)
