Acting Senior Officer Philanthropic Partnerships

Purpose of the position

Leading the Philanthropic Partnerships team, building lasting funding relationships and guiding our fundraising with institutional donors. The position is for approximately one year while the permanent staff member is on leave.


Job summary

You are responsible for developing and overseeing Mama Cash’s strategies and policies for resource mobilisation from institutional donors; You actively contribute to the organisation’s financial base and you advise on the strategic direction of Mama Cash’s resource mobilisation and philanthropic partnerships; You are supervising the Philanthropic Partnerships team, reporting to the Director of Partnerships and Communications (DPC).

Essential job function

A. Resource Mobilisation

  • Set institutional fundraising and donor engagement goals and develop strategy, in close collaboration with the DPC.;
  • Manage and implement a prospecting strategy to mobilise resources from institutional donors, including identifying and pursuing new types and sources of funding, new partnership development, building and cultivating relationships and developing proposals;
  • Work with the DPC to set institutional fundraising targets, identify trends and developments in the area of institutional donor fundraising, and create and pursue new institutional donor funding opportunities for Mama Cash and women’s funds more broadly;
  • Oversee and coordinate all aspects of the planning and implementation of the philanthropic partnerships programme make an active and substantive contribution to the development and formulation of Mama Cash’s strategic and annual plans in the area of fundraising;
  • Conduct periodic analysis of institutional donor giving and monitor budget adherence;
  • Oversee the recording of donor grant restrictions/preferences and gift acknowledgements;
  • Oversee and contribute to writing and tracking of institutional donor proposals and reports;
  • Analyse and articulate trends and progress within Mama Cash’s programmatic work – grantmaking and accompaniment, strengthening women’s funds, and influencing the donor community – for institutional donor audiences;
  • Make and sustain personal contacts among institutional donors and networks;

B. Outreach and Communications

  • Represent the organisation in donor cultivation and solicitation meetings;
  • Represent Mama Cash at national and international gatherings, speak on panels, and make presentations on the work of the organisation to the philanthropic sector (including potential funders, other women’s funds and stakeholders);
  • Work with the Senior Officer for Communications to ensure that annual reports, newsletters, digital bulletins and other communications pieces speak to the institutional donor audience;
  • Collaborate with the Research, Knowledge and Advocacy team to input on the knowledge building agenda from an institutional donor fundraising perspective;
  • Be active in relevant membership organisations and affinity groups;
  • Serve as the institutional donor resource person for external consultants conducting projects with Mama Cash.

C. Management and Supervision

  • May replace the Director of Partnerships and Communications in case of short absence;
  • Supervise members of the Philanthropic Partnerships team and provide broader guidance to other Partnerships and Communications team members;
  • Set and manage the Philanthropic Partnerships team budget;
  • Play an active role with the DPC in the budgeting and budget monitoring process.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Strong commitment to women’s rights and the values, goals and work of Mama Cash;
  • Strong working knowledge of international development and women’s, girls’, trans people’s and intersex people’s human rights;
  • Demonstrated successful experience and effectiveness in relationship building, solicitation and stewardship of institutional donors;
  • Solid people and process management skills and experience;
  • Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills (verbal and written), with the ability to interact with people from a wide diversity of backgrounds and cultures;
  • Coaching and supervisory skills and the ability to work well with colleagues from different departments;
  • Excellent writing, research and analytical skills;
  • Excellent, demonstrable command of English (native speaker-level) and a strong command of Dutch;
  • Strict attention to detail and strong editing skills;
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work, manage a variety of tasks simultaneously and meet multiple deadlines;
  • Possess a relevant and broad network and a strong ability to independently develop and maintain external relationships;
  • Experience with and responsibility for budgets;
  • Knowledge and command of standard office software and database systems.

Education and experience:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience, preferably in institutional fundraising, including at least three years supervisory experience;
  • BA/BS in the social sciences with expertise preferred in international relations and/or women’s studies—MA/MS preferred;
  • A strong working knowledge of feminist movements, gender justice frameworks and international women’s rights;
  • Professional experience with and responsibility for project management, budgets, and supervision;
  • Strong familiarity with developments and trends within the field of professional fundraising and the ability to translate and implement these into actionable plans.
