The Center’s game-changing litigation and advocacy work, combined with its unparalleled expertise in constitutional, comparative, and international human rights law, have transformed how reproductive rights are understood by courts, governments, and human rights bodies worldwide. It has played a key role in securing landmark legal victories in the U.S., Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe on issues including access to life-saving obstetrics care, contraception, safe abortion services, and comprehensive sexuality information, as well as the prevention of forced sterilization and child marriage. It has brought groundbreaking cases before national courts, U.N. Committees, and regional human rights bodies, led the development of historic, proactive legislation advancing robust protections for reproductive rights, and has built the legal capacity of women’s rights advocates in more than 60 countries.
The Global Press Officer reports to the Director of Media Relations and will work closely with global, human rights and foreign policy program staff and other key staff. They will supervise Regional Communications Coordinators with dotted line supervision with Regional Directors and Manager of Global Digital Strategies.
S/he will play indispensable role in ensuring media coverage and mentions of the Center for Reproductive Rights in high-profile media, shaping the organization’s messaging and influencing public discourse on the Center’s issues.
The Global Press Officer bears primary responsibility for developing and executing innovative, pro-active and effective strategies for increasing the visibility of the Center’s global litigation, advocacy, human rights, and foreign policy program work in U.S., international, regional and local media in addition to other programs. The Global Press Officer will assist in developing a strategic plan for continued growth of the Center’s global and human rights media efforts in support of our short- and long-term strategic objectives.
S/he Officer will engage journalists and thought leaders at the global, national, regional and local levels in the Center’s work and initiatives: ensure media coverage and mentions, interviews (TV, radio, online and print), op-eds in key media outlets; develop supporting materials for all media requests, events and campaigns; internal communications about the Center’s global work; and training and preparing Center representatives for media appearances.
The Global Press Officer plays a vital strategic role in the Communications Department, continually surveying the media landscape for upcoming opportunities and challenges—and working with colleagues within the department and cross-departmentally with program staff to coordinate strategies for responding to them, often on very tight deadlines.
The Global Press Officer's primary job responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Strategize, coordinate and execute media relations operations to secure media coverage of the Center’s global advocacy, litigation, human rights, and U.S. foreign policy work—including coverage in both U.S. and international outlets, as well as national regional and local outlets in countries where the Center is actively engaged in advocacy efforts
- Work with the Director of Media Relations to identify opportunities and develop strategies for linking the Center and its work to global trends and issues in international press, as well as identify key crossover opportunities to link the Center’s global and U.S. work with other press officers
- Supervise Regional Communications Coordinators with dotted line supervision with Regional Directors and Manager of Global Digital Strategies
- Serve as primary point of contact for all regional offices with the Center’s Global Legal Program with respect to their media needs, as well as primary point of contact for key U.S. Policy and Advocacy staff responsible for the Center’s human rights and foreign policy efforts
- Develops press materials (press releases, statements, pitch letters, LTEs, talking points, briefing memos, press conferences and availabilities, op-eds, etc.) related to the Center’s global advocacy, human rights and U.S. foreign policy initiatives (in partnership with other press officers and senior writer where appropriate)
- Prepare Center spokespeople for press interviews and public appearances, including drafting talking points and key messages and providing formal media training and informal prep sessions prior to each interview or event.
- Manage the Center’s robust database of media contacts on global, legal, human rights and foreign policy beats, and ensuring it is current and constantly expanding as reporter assignments change. Proactively develop relationships with reporters and editors
- Oversee daily monitoring of relevant news and compilation of daily media reports distributed to staff and others highlighting coverage the Center and important trends
- Work closely and collaborate effectively with other departments to ensure strategies are aligned across the organization
- Work with partner organizations on joint messaging and shared media goals as appropriate
- Manage visibility projects with the Director of Media Relations and Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, which includes developing speaker proposals, identifying and placing the Center’s President and other spokespeople at U.S., global and regional conferences and high-level speaking opportunities.
- Execute special projects as needed; other duties as assigned
- Travel as needed
- Assist the Director of Media Relations in developing and maintaining the department’s budget for media-related expenses
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Advanced degree in communications, journalism or related field highly preferred.
- Deep dedication to the Center’s mission, values, and strategic objectives
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience with at least 2 years direct experience management of multi-disciplinary U.S. and international communications;
- Successful track record of developing and leading communications strategies and campaigns in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment;
- Deep experience in media and press strategy including print, broadcast, digital and interactive media; hold strong existing press relationships
- Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem-solving, and mentoring skills, and a calm, diplomatic demeanor—even in times of intense pressure;
- Experience managing a team across multiple time zones required;
- Exceptional writing, editing and messaging skills;
- Strong verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively;
- Proficiency with project management tools; experience with Asana a plus;
- Extremely sharp organizational skills and ability to manage large volumes of projects, tasks, and files;
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of strong personalities; sense of humor;
- Ability to travel within and outside the U.S. as needed.
