Overview of the position

Co-creating Feminist Realities (CFR) as a framework, is the centerpiece of AWID’s 2018-2022 strategic plan.

We understand feminist realities as current, existing practices that people and groups are forging that break the logic that holds together oppression at multiple and interconnected dimension (racial, gender-based, economic, and others). They can also be  the ideas, ways of thinking, the ‘proposals to become practice’ that are in the works. We believe that there is critical value in bringing light to and support for feminist realities, not as impossible dreams, but as lived experiences and concrete proposals for a just world. They show what is possible - and even more importantly - that what is possible is actually happening.

Co-creating feminist realities is our political organization-wide project in response to the dire context for rights and justice. It brings much needed hope and it is also a recognition of a need to shift power to and within our movements, and build collective power behind feminist proposals and solutions.

The AWID Forum - our flagship event that takes place every 4 years in a different region of the world and brings together around 2,000 feminist and social justice activists -  has Co-Creating Feminist Realities as its theme.

About the role

This is a unique opportunity for a talented, experienced and enthusiastic feminist curator to explore how the leading edge of craft, art, and design can elevate and engage with feminist realities. 

The Curator will be an innovative thinker, responsible for developing relationships with a wide range of artists (also as speakers and content providers in their role as movement actors), artivists, academics, human rights defenders, and implementing robust curated programs that explore the state of Feminist Realities. The curator will also coordinate the artist working group and work with artists to create participatory processes that enable people to 'make art' related to FRs as a way to engage the concept. This curation will be featured in AWID’s digital spaces, as well as the AWID International Forum in November 2020.

Major responsibilities

  • Provide a strong voice, direction and coherent strategy around the curation of Feminist Realities making sure that relevant, diverse and multidimensional content is included.
  • Identify and obtain print, audio, video and other material which will be used in online and offline exhibitions  about Feminist Realities.
  • Work with the feminist artists working group to produce and implement an online and offline exhibition within the Feminist Realities theme.
  • Create presentations that are aesthetically impressive, politically powerful; engaging, inspiring and thought-provoking for online audiences and Forum participants that showcase/become FRs themselves.
  • Ensure the timely and effective implementation of curation activities and deliverables, as outlined in the organisational work plan.
  • Cross-team, cross-organizational coherence and connection of Feminist Realities curation work with initiatives, tactics and other teams in AWID.
  • Collaborate with Forum Team members in the preparation of exhibition installation schedule and exhibition design.
  • Collaborate with the Forum Team on administrative aspects of exhibitions, and guide them in preparation of contracts and exhibition inventories,condition reports, and organizing shipping logistics.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to ensure feminist artivist goals, objectives, and deadlines are met.
  • Maintain active relationships with artists, artivists, community members, lenders, donors, and professional colleagues.
  • Engage with AWID's priority constituencies throughout their work in a manner that is consistent and coordinated with organizational constituency engagement strategies.
  • Work/Engage with AWID Forum's Content and Methodology Committee members - and with other partners involved in popular education as part of AWID’s CFR process - for synchronicity and mutual enrichment between the A&CE and the knowledge building work of the organization. 

Organisational leadership, development and support:

  • Promote an organizational culture of high performance and professional development and growth that values learning and teamwork.
  • Promote shared leadership and participatory processes within the CFR team in its interactions with other AWID teams.
  • Facilitate cross-team meetings as required to ensure information-sharing and further joint work objectives (including project teams).

Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in curation, with demonstrated interpretive, writing, presentation/public speaking, and communication skills, and the ability to conduct research, and apply learnings to the creation of exhibitions that illuminate a political vision. 
  • Experience in developing the curator as role within which the art world locates its work of recognizing, celebrating, validating, and rejecting, anchored within a feminist political vision.
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and procedures involved in the interpretation and exhibition of art for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with feminist activists and movements, and particularly with historically oppressed movements such as Black, Indigenous, young, trans and intersex, imporverished, sex worker activists and others.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and research skills.
  • Experience working alongside artist collectives, feminist popular educators, trainers; 
  • Experience designing and managing creative events;  
  • Experience in project and program management; ability to meet multiple deliverables and deadlines; ability to plan, organize and lead the implementation of plans and processes; 
  • Demonstrated capacity to think strategically and analytically, with expertise in complex problem solving, decision-making and critical thinking skills, displays good judgment; 
  • Demonstrated capacity to network and build strategic alliances internationally with individual artists, artist collectives, donors, and/or other civil society organizations and other external stakeholder groups; 
  • Experience with financial management; knowledge of accounting procedures and protocols, budgeting; 
  • Ability to work with a diverse and virtual team and engage team members, build consensus, and build high performance teams; 
  • Strong public speaker – able to convey information clearly, concisely and in a compelling way; 
  • Experience working with diverse communities from multiple identities across the globe, in a virtual environment; 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English;
  • Excellent attention to detail; 
  • Expertise in the use of MS Office software and online collaborative tools such G Suite:

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience:

  • Familiarity with elements of feminist theory and women’s rights frameworks; 
  • Background in feminist and social justice activism;
  • Versed in one or more of AWID languages (Spanish/French)  in addition to English; 
  • Experience of shared leadership models of work.
  • Experience using Slack and Asana and other similar online collaborative tools;

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to travel internationally (approx. 6-8 weeks per year)

Details: consultancy assignment; hiring on a part-time staff basis (a minimum of 10 hours a week) will also be considered
