JASS (Just Associates), an international women’s human rights organization anchored by its regional networks in Southeast Asia, Southern Africa and Mesoamerica, is dedicated to strengthening women’s voice, visibility and collective power to advance justice for all. Our operations in Jakarta, Phnom Penh, Cape Town, Honduras, and Mexico City directly support diverse women’s leadership and movement-building initiatives and are linked by a virtual and Washington DC-based cross-regional operation focused on fundraising, financial management, communications and strategic advocacy. JASS’ work is carried out by 35+ full and part-time staff spread across 15 countries worldwide who are supported by a set of strategic Advisors and Board members. In 2015, we launched an organizational strengthening process to improve JASS’ effectiveness, resilience and sustainability including better aligning our regional and cross-regional/global work to increase impact, activating our growing networks, and improving our internal organizational governance, systems and procedures. To this end, we aim to practice feminist organizing principles and be a true reflection of the multi-regional and global nature of our work, while also meeting the challenges and opportunities of the current political and funding landscape, and working within the parameters of a non-profit legal structure. The primary purpose of the HR Manager role is to enable JASS to become a stronger and more effective organization by connecting and supporting our multi-regional teams.
Location: Flexible but must be based in one of the regions in which JASS works (Southern Africa, Mesoamerica, Southeast Asia), with a strong preference for Cape Town, Johannesburg, Mexico City or Washington, DC.
The HR Manager plays a crucial and strategic role in connecting our multi-regional teams. You will report directly to the Operations Director and your specific role will be to advise on, coordinate and accompany all human resources activities across the organization. Concrete responsibilities include:
- Develop and oversee processes of recruitment and onboarding of new staff, including orientation to JASS’ feminist principles and culture
- Ensure adequate systems for performance management are put in place and administered as part of the organizational life cycle, including providing advice and support to directors and managers, monitoring staff personal and professional development plans, ensuring job descriptions and contracts are up to date and filed
- Advise and support directors and staff in conflict management and the resolution of employee relations and complex HR issues; proactively raise HR issues with supervisors
- Monitor and support the compliance of JASS with policies and standards required by registration statuses in the United States, Mexico and South Africa
- Oversee payroll and the administration of benefits programs for staff, working closely with regionally-based finance and operations colleagues; research and cost out benefits alternatives as needed; serve as liaison to US-based benefits vendors
- Work with relevant operations and management staff to develop JASS’ personnel policies and procedures including review of pay and benefits policies and coordination with sister organizations around best practice; maintain and update policy manuals and employee handbooks
- Respond to staff inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and terms of employment.
- Keep audit-quality, legally compliant records of contracts and personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, leave, grievances, performance reviews, and terminations
- In concert with and under the direction of the Director of Operations, develop and implement a risk management program
- Where relevant, supervision of any general support staff based in D.C.
- Advise and support activities for strengthening feminist leadership, team-building across the organization, including mentoring and coaching skills as well as tools for improving virtual teamwork and supporting a culture of shared leadership
- Participate in designing and delivering staff celebrations, gatherings and recognitions.
Skills & Experience
- 6+ years professional experience in human resources and organizational development work in the not for profit sector and/or social justice sector, ideally including working virtually across the globe
- Knowledge of federal and state labor law in the U.S. and experience working within labor laws in multiple countries
- Proven experience linking HR processes to overall organizational outcome and impact effectiveness
- Experience in feminist organizations and/or social justice organizations with innovative approaches to human resources management and development
- English and Spanish fluency
- Experience working internationally in a multi-cultural, multi-linguistic environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills while ensuring confidentiality
- Strong computer literacy (Word, Excel, Gmail, Google Calendar, Skype)
- Post-secondary education in human resources management and/or related HR certifications are highly desirable
- Thrive in an environment of deep learning and ongoing evolution
