We're actively looking for a Director within our Gender team, who will be responsible for shaping the overall global Gender team strategy and be accountable for applying the strategy across the countries and products where Girl Effect operates. In practice this means leading and/or supporting strategic pieces of work to ensure the Gender team applies skills and knowledge in best practice gender programming, understanding of girls needs in development contexts and wider development sector trends in gender and girls rights in a way that, working collaboratively with media, tech and evidence teams, produce cutting edge products and approaches will be designed and implemented to shape a new normal for girls.

The Gender team is the gender technical function that integrates gender technical expertise into Girl Effect’s unique approach to social norm change for girls’ empowerment. The team has a global presence with team members working where Girl Effect has offices established, who work in strong collaboration with the London-based Gender team. 

Within our London office, the team consists of the Global Gender Director, two Managers and one Specialist. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for shaping the overall global Gender team strategy, inputting into resourcing plans at global and country level, and leading the implementation of the strategy.
  • Together with the Global Gender Director, ensure that the Gender team is strongly positioned across the organization and represented in all key decision making and strategic fora.
  • Drive the implementation of Girl Effect’s gender technical approach to social norm change for girls to ensure that GE work is grounded in evidence and has the greatest impact possible. This includes leading on pieces of work around GE’s theoretical approach to gender norm change; inputing into brand and evidence work streams and research to ensure our work delivers against our Theory of Change; producing briefs and key knowledge pieces/tools to improve the organization’s gender work; conduct/commission research to fill sector knowledge gaps around issues of great relevance for adolescent girls.
  • Steer the Gender team’s support, leading where appropriate, to providing gender technical work across existing and new geographies (Ethiopia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Malawi and India). This includes inputing into country strategy development and delivery; conducting/commissioning research that provides insights around girls and the context they live in and other country level knowledge gaps and needs; supporting geo specific product design, rollout/scale-up, and content generation.
  • Steer the Gender team’s support, leading where appropriate, to providing gender technical expertise to global products (e.g. TEGA). This includes inputting into to design and strategy development and delivery processes, including developing and delivering training as needed, content development (lead in creating or supporting creation process) and conduct/commission research to fill product knowledge gaps/needs as required.
  • Contribute to the development of a highly effective team by providing line management support to other team members and matrix management to senior team members in-country.
  • Keep up to date with trends and developments on girls’ rights and gender equality to ensure GE is positioned as a key thought leader on adolescent girls by actively maintaining relationships with key actors and participating in, and where appropriate, convening, events to showcase our technical approach to gender norm change.
  • Support gender mainstreaming activities across the organisation through inputting into organisational policies and practice and develop and delivery capacity building initiatives for staff on gender equality issues.
  • Feed into the development (and implementation as appropriate) of key policies like safeguarding, child protection, compensation for girls in our value chains, co-design, etc. 
  • Provide gender technical expertise to new business development and partnerships, and their integration into brands and products.

Skills and Experience

  • Advanced degree in gender, human rights, development or social sciences
  • Demonstrated track record of having both undertaken and led on global and national level programming on gender and/or child/youth empowerment and rights
  • Extensive experience of girl-centred programme design and implementation and good knowledge of behavioural change theories
  • Experience in the design and analysis of monitoring, evaluation and research
  • Experience training and facilitating capacity building on gender/girls’ empowerment
  • Excellent report writing, presentation and communication skills
  • Proven people management skills and team building skills
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Proven success in working as part of a team, as well as a team leader
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and experience of working in a multi-cultural team
  • High attention to detail and ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Commitment to gender equality
