ONLINE PRIVACY AND SECURITY POLICY |
This Online Privacy and Security Policy (the "Policy") sets out the personal information practices for the Association for the Women's Rights in Development ("AWID") websites (www.awid.org) and the WHRnet website (www.whrnet.org) (collectively, the "Sites") (collectively, "AWID" or "we"). This Policy is based on international privacy standards such as those of the European Union and the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, as well as the requirements of Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, among the strictest of privacy standards. By clicking on the "I Accept" button located at the bottom of this Policy, you confirm that you have read the Policy and consent to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information by AWID as outlined in this Policy. If this Policy is not acceptable to you, please click on the "I do not Accept" button located at the bottom of the Policy and do not submit any of your personal information.
We may update this Policy from time to time and you are responsible for reviewing the most current version of the Policy. The date of the last update to this Policy is at the end of the Policy. By continuing to use the Sites, you accept any updates to this Policy.
What is Personal Information?
Personal information is information about an individual who can be identified. Personal information includes information such as: your name, address, email address, income, and your credit card details.
How do the Sites Collect My Personal Information?
The Sites collect information from you by asking you to provide personal information such as your name, address, range of income and credit card details in order to receive the services you request, such as AWID membership, AWID Forum registration, or AWID's email group mailings.
Certain other information may be collected on the Sites without your actively providing the information by using various technologies, as described below:
IP Addresses
An IP Address is a number assigned to your computer by your Internet Service Provider so that you can access the Internet. We collect IP addresses on the Sites. We use your IP address for the purposes of system administration and to audit use of the Sites.
Cookies
Some pages on the Sites use a technology called "cookies". "Persistent" cookies are bits of information that are placed on the hard drive of your computer and stay there unless you delete the cookie. The Sites use persistent cookies to customize the Sites based on your language preferences. We do not collect personal information through the use of cookies. With most Internet browsers, you can erase cookies from your computer hard drive, block all cookies, or receive a warning before a cookie is stored. Please refer to your browser instructions or help screen to learn more about these functions.
Other Collected Data
Our server logs, maintained by our Internet Service Provider and by AWID, collect information such as IP addresses, monitor which pages of our Sites were visited and the website from which visitors came to our Sites (ie., whether from a link on another website, or from a search engine). This data does not identify individuals.
Can I Refuse or Withdraw My Consent?
You can refuse the collection of your personal information and, subject to certain legal restrictions and reasonable notice, withdraw your consent to the continued use or disclosure of personal information AWID has already collected from you. You should understand, however, that refusing or withdrawing your consent may result in us being unable to provide you with membership or other AWID services. You can withdraw your consent at any time by writing to the Privacy Officer at the address at the end of this Policy.
How Does AWID Use and Disclose My Personal Information?
Personal information collected through the Sites will only be used or disclosed for purposes described in this Policy or for other purposes that we have informed you of at the time of collecting that information. Before your personal information will be used or disclosed for a new purpose, we will ask you for your consent, unless use or disclosure without your consent in the circumstances is otherwise permitted or required by law, regulation or court order.
We may use personal information to improve the content of our Sites, to customize the Sites to your preferences, to research Site usage patterns and for product and service development. We may also use your personal information to contact you regarding membership services or to respond to voluntary comments or requests for information, including email group mailing you have registered for. Where you have consented to such use and disclosure, we may use or disclose your personal information for marketing and research purposes.
We do not sell or rent our member lists.
We may disclose personal information to related organizations who agree to follow this Policy, for the purpose of providing you with the products or services you have asked for. We may also disclose personally identifiable information to third parties, but only:
- to service providers we use to support our business (e.g., technical support or third party services administering our credit card system) in which case we will require them to agree to follow this Policy;
- to other organizations or individuals for networking, but not commercial, purposes to provide aggregate demographic data to our funders; or
- where permitted or required by laws, court orders, or government regulations.
How Does AWID Protect My Personal Information?
The protection of your personal information transmitted through the Sites, including your financial and credit card information, is very important to us. For this reason, AWID uses a technology called Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption to ensure that the sensitive information exchanged between your computer and our Sites is secure and cannot be accessed by a third party. Please be aware that complete confidentiality and security is not yet possible over the Internet.
We will only keep personal information for as long as it is needed for the purposes for which it was collected, or as otherwise required by any applicable laws. We use industry standard safeguards to protect the security of personal information in our possession. Personal information may be processed or stored in Canada or another jurisdiction and may be subject to the laws of that country.
How Can I Access and Correct My Personal Information?
You can ask to view your personal information by writing to the Privacy Officer at the address provided at the end of this Policy. You can request that corrections be made where you can show that the information in our possession is incorrect or incomplete. Please note that under certain circumstances, you may not be permitted to view your records, such as where such disclosure would raise security, legal or confidentiality issues.
Protecting the Privacy of Children
The Sites are not intended for children under the age of 13. We will not knowingly collect, use or disclose information from Site visitors under the age of 13. We encourage parents to talk to their children about their use of the Internet and the information they disclose on-line.
Links to Other Websites
The Sites may contain links to other websites. While we try to link only to other websites that share our standards and respect for privacy, we are not responsible for the content of or the privacy practices employed by other websites.
Communication Soliciting Personal or Other Information
Please do not reply/respond to any communication other than through the Sites, including email or phone calls claiming to be from AWID and asking you to provide any financial or other personal information before verifying that the communication is from AWID. Prior to providing information (financial or personal) on any website, verify the legitimacy of the website, its website address and the owners or operators of the website. Make sure that the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that appears on the "address" or "location" box on your browser window is the one you wish to access.
We invite you to report or inform AWID about all such instances of any of the above at (+1) 416-594-3773 or write to us at awid@awid.org
