Day/Field Trips

Field Trip to the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC)

A local woman-centered travel agency is offering a field trip to the Saartjie Barrtman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC), for interested forum delegates:

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC) is a one-stop centre for women and children who are survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence. It serves as a model of service clustering and entrepreneurial spirit by women for their own economic, social and political empowerment.

Join other AWID 2008 Forum delegates in visiting the SBCWC. The visit starts with the SBCWC Director and other key staff giving a general introduction to the Centre and its partner organisations in the form of a panel discussion.
Tea and light refreshments is served in the Centre Cafeteria which forms part of the resident catering/chef assistant training programme. The visit is concluded with an hour-long walk-about and small-group interactions with the organisations SBCWC houses and has forged strategic partnerships with.

Field trip to Stellenbosch: The Women on Farms Project

The Women on Farms Project is organizing a one-day field trip for interested Forum participants to learn about the history and struggles of women who live and work on farms in South Africa. Participants will explore organizing models used by women on farms and will visit a farm location in the Stellenbosch area. The fieldtrip will be conducted in English only. Participants will depart from the CTICC at 10:00 on November 16 and return to Cape Town by about 17:30. There will be a fee on a sliding scale between R100 and R1000 to cover related expenses. For more information, or to reserve your space now (you must sign up by November 14) please contact Sharon Bailey (wfp@wfp.org.za or +27 21 887 2960).

Half-day trips

We are offering two half-day trips before and after the forum, to Table Mountain and to Robben Island, through the travel company that is taking care of forum hotels and transfers. The option to book one or both of these tours directly with the company will be available when you book on the hotel website (or you can email them directly at Melissa@eish.travel).

We are also hoping to provide a list of feminist travel companies that can arrange different kinds of non-mainstream tourist experiences. And we would like, if there is interest, to enable forum participants to connect with and visit organizations in Cape Town doing similar kinds of work, outside of the forum. We currently have a call out to organizations and agencies in South Africa, and once we hear back, we will be posting information how to take advantage of these opportunities, so please check back for updates.

If you are a South African, Cape-Town based organization that is interested in hosting visitors, of if you are a feminist travel agency that is interested in offering specialty tours to our delegates, please email us at forum08@awid.org for more information and an application form.
