Have you ever considered that the livelihood programs you help design and fund in order to protect and empower women could actually have the opposite effect? A serious unintended consequence could be a rise in protection risks for women and girls including that of gender-based violence (GBV).
Recognizing this troubling link between livelihoods and gender-based violence, the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) undertook extensive field research and produced the 2009 report: Peril or Protection: The Link between Livelihoods and Gender-based Violence in Displacement Settings. This was followed by the guidance manual Preventing Gender-based Violence, Building Livelihoods, and an e-learning course on how to make work safe.
As part of its dissemination of research and good practice, the WRC is hosting a webinar on the intersection of GBV and livelihoods. The webinar will feature a moderated discussion between livelihood and GBV experts addressing good program practices and recommendations to make work safe. The expert panel will also explain the “Safety Mapping Tool” designed by the WRC to help lay the foundation for safe livelihoods in displacement settings. The panel discussion will be followed by a live Q&A chat session with the audience.
