Egypt: Provisional release of Ms. Mahienour El-Massry

The Observatory has been informed by reliable sources about the provisional release of Ms.Mahienour El-Massry, a human rights lawyer known for her activism in favour of judicial independence and prisoners’ rights by organising peaceful protests, support activities for political prisoners and using social media to denounce human rights violations. 


Guatemala: Temporary Detention, and Subsequent Release, of Human Rights Defenders following Peaceful Demonstration against Mining Activities

Human rights defenders Ms Norma Lila Sut Sancir and Mr Carlos Alfredo Juárez Díaz were released on 22 September 2014 following their arrest in the department of Chiquimula in what Front Line Defenders interprets as an attempt to criminalise human rights defenders for their participation in peaceful demonstrations against human rights violations in Guatemala. 


Bahrain: Human rights defender Ms Ghada Jamsheer detained for tweeting

On the evening of 14 September 2014, human rights defender Ms Ghada Jamsheer was arrested after the Public Prosecution ordered her detention for one week, during which she will be interrogated on allegations of defamation.

On August 30th Bahraini woman human rights defendeMaryam al-Khawaja was arbitrarily detained upon her arrival at Bahrain International Airport. Maryam, who is the co-director of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights, was traveling to Bahrain to visit her father, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who is currently on a hunger strike in Jaw Prison protesting his arbitrary detention. We are deeply concerned about Maryam’s safety in custody as well as the safety of scores of civil society activists unjustly languishing in Bahrain’s prisons.

Bahrain: Human Rights Defender Maryam Al-Khawaja Detained

On 30 August 2014, human rights defender Ms Maryam Al-Khawaja was detained upon arrival at Bahrain International Airport. She was travelling to visit Mr Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja in detention, who has been on hunger strike since 24 August 2014.
