Sudan: Meriam Yehya Ibrahim At Risk of Flogging And Death Sentence

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, a Christian Sudanese woman, was convicted on charges of 'adultery' and 'apostasy' and is at risk of being sentenced to flogging and death. She is a prisoner of conscience, currently in detention with her 20-month-old son.


Russia: Human rights organisation Union 'Women of Don' recognised as a 'Foreign Agent'

On 14 May 2014, Novocherkassk City Court ruled that Union 'Women of Don' must register as a 'foreign agent'. The lawyers of 'Women of Don' intend to appeal this decision.


Mexico: Killing of human rights defender Sandra Luz Hernandez

On 12 May 2014, human rights defender Ms Sandra Luz Hernandez was killed in Culiacán, Sinaloa. The human rights defender was shot 15 times in the head in broad daylight. 


Petition: Tell the government of El Salvador to grant pardons for 17 Salvadoran women imprisoned for pregnancy complications

Because of El Salvador’s absolute ban on all abortions, seventeen Salvadoran women who arrived at public healthcare facilities after suffering a miscarriage, stillbirth or other obstetric complication, often hemorrhaging and unconscious, were accused of provoking an abortion and turned over to police. They were prosecuted for aggravated homicide based on a constitutional amendment declaring that life begins at conception and now sit in prison, serving sentences of up to 40 years.

On 8 May 2014 human rights defender and lawyer Ms Shireen Essawi began a hunger strike after learning of the postponement of her trial for nine months and a day. She is charged with cooperating with actors who are working against the state of Israel.

Colombia: Threats Made Against Indigenous Defenders

Fifteen-year-old Génesis Giselle Gutiérrez Romero, a member of the Wayúu Indigenous Reservation of Zahíno, received a death threat on 5 May. She and her family are linked to a local human rights organization which campaigns on behalf of the Wayúu Indigenous communities which have been the target of repeated paramilitary death threats.

Colombia: Threats and surveillance of human rights defender Ms Nevys Niño Rodríguez and members of Movice Atlántico

On 3 May 2014, human rights defender Ms Nevys Niño Rodríguez received a threatening text message which warned her to be careful and that she was under surveillance.
