Sri Lanka: Ms. Balendran Jayakumari and daughter illegally detained and held without charge

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information that Ms. Balendran Jayakumari and her daughter Vithushaini (13) both were arrested on 13 March 2014, by officers attached to the Kilinochchi Police Station. Jayakumari has been active in the search of disappeared persons, including members of her own family for several years.

China: Female activist Liu Hua detained for exposing RTL

Anti-corruption activist Liu Hua, a woman who exposed abuses in China’s Re-Education Through Labour (RTL) system, has been criminally detained on the charge of “picking quarrels and making troubles”. It is widely believed that she is being punished by the authorities for appearing in a documentary that exposed the torture and other ill-treatment of the RTL system.

Bahrain: Trial of Nafeesa al-‘Asfoor and Rayhana al-Mousawi proceeds despite torture allegations

The trial of two women protesters for attempting to enter the Formula 1 circuit during a protest at the Bahrain Grand Prix last year resumed on 25 March. They told the court they had been tortured. One of them has already been sentenced to five years in prison in a separate case.

Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteer Maryam Haid was arrested on 13 January in Damascus. She was later shown “confessing” on a programme on a pro-government TV channel. She has been held in conditions amounting to enforced disappearance and her life may be in danger.

Sri Lanka: Siege at the home of human rights defender Ms Balendran Jayakumari

On 13 March 2014, human rights defender Ms Balendran Jayakumari and her 13-year-old daughter were detained in their Killinochchi home in northern Sri Lanka from approximately 4pm until 10pm.
