Website: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO): Gender and Food Security
This website provides gender information on nine key aspects of food security-agriculture, the environement, forestry, fisheries, rural economies, population, nutrition, education and the gender division of labour.
For each issue, an overview is provided which explains why a gender perspective is important. For example, the section on agriculture notes that women farmers are frequently overlooked in development strategies, despite the fact that rural women in particular are responsible for half of the world's food production and produce between 60 and 80 percent of the food in most developing countries. Because farmers are still generally perceived as 'male' by policy makers, women find it more difficult than men to gain access to valuable resources such as land, credit and agricultural inputs, technology, training and services that would enhance their capacity to grow crops. For each issue, there are links to further information including facts and figures and areas for action. Information is also available on the lessons learned in relation to gender and food security. This includes ten country case studies showing lessons learned in relation to gender and participation in agricultural development planning, as well as examples of good practices in gender mainstreaming and implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action.
The website is available in Arabic, English, Spanish, French.
