WIELD Foundation was launched in 2004 to achieve greater equality and leadership opportunities for women and girls in business, politics and in their communities by cultivating the skills and experiences women need to occupy and excel in leadership positions. WIELD’s programs initially focused on West Africa with the intent to increase visibility of fellows, expand advocacy on women’s issues, and establish a strong international network that promotes female Leadership.

The organization’s new name derives from the Yoruba legend of Moremi a powerful woman leader from Ile-Ife. The legend better reflects the commitment the organization has to developing a generation of transformative leaders.

With its new name, Moremi Initiative combined with its expanded programs; the organization remains committed to their mission of engaging, inspiring and equipping young African women and girls to become the next generation of leading politicians, activists, social entrepreneurs and change agents. Moremi Initiative is an African initiative for African women by African women to advance opportunities and potential of women and school-age girls in an effort to create an inclusive society where women and girls can participate in Leadership roles and decision-making in critical spheres of society.

As part of the re-introduction, the organization has also created a new website that provides an opportunity for visitors and users to learn more about the programs, partnership opportunities and critical issues affecting African women and girls as well as to get involved.
